Grade 5 - Lesson 11 - May I Speak to Yuna (대교 - Daegyo)
« Reply #1 on: June 27, 2012, 10:00:19 am »
I took this PPT from one of the other lessons and adapted it to fit our book. I also added a guessing game at the end.

Guessing Game
Print the character cards and cut them out. I used the characters from the book, but you could change it to pictures of anyone the students would know.  It works well with up to 8 cards.

Pick one card and the students guess which card you have by saying, "This is (their name). May I speak to ______?" If they are right, say "Speaking." If they are wrong, say, "He/She's not home."

I usually give them 3 guesses. If they guess it right the first time, they get 3 points, 2 for the 2nd time, 1 for the third and then no points after that.

After you've done one or two as an example, have a student come to the front of the class and pick a card.

I've played this game with all grades for various lessons and they always seem really into it.

Writing Test Game for 4th Period

Speed game for 5th Review Period also. I included the solutions in the notes in the PPT just for teacher reference on some of the trickier ones. I print these puppies out and play the game, but I usually run through the PPT just once to practice each picture with the kids before playing.

This is handy for motivation. It has key phrases in text followed by the Korean subtitles.

There isn't that much in this thread so I had to look in other books with similar chapters for things to do. I ended up using a Blazing Pens template and changing it to fit the sentences and words from this book's chapter. This can be used as a quick game or as a review. It's fairly easy. Instead of making teams I called on students individually and after they answered once they couldn't answer again. This helps get more students answering than just the 3 or 4 kids who always speak. It only deals with expressions from the first part of the chapter.

Mostly for my own entertainment, I got the kids listening to the Banana Phone song. As a warm up, I wrote a few words (that occur a lot in the song) on the board and made the kids stand up and sit down when they heard their word.

First played this version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5C6X9vOEkU

then this one

I then put together this quick disappearing dialogue for them, and got them to write their own role plays for a phone conversation. Hope that helps someone :)

I adapted the Gangnam game. This is more relevant to the lesson.

Anyone else having trouble with the sound for the bomb game?

Review cards and Open Class PPT

The kids review vocabulary words with a mini competition.

Print, cut, fold, and glue!

Game directions are at the end of the PPT.

Missing Dialog game
Groups of four. Pick two students from a team at a time. Have them read the dialog. If they do it correctly with no pauses, they get one point. Move to the next team and hide a word. Continue as such. Pretty simple.

Find the candy
Groups of four. The entire team has to say the sentence together. Click on the square with the sentence they chose. If they find the candy they get a point.

Both are good for speaking skills.

I guess I might be alone in still using this book?

Here's a lesson for first period including introducing the language from the look and listen video, a pass the ball style game and a game called 'Fireman Sam.'

One student sits at the computer and covers their eyes while another student is given a phone by the teacher, which they hide. This student is Sam.  I used a plastic banana, whatever you have that's roughly phone shaped is probably fine.

The first student then tries to contact Fireman Sam as their house burns down. They do this by using the number pad on screen. They dial '555-##' with the last two digits being another classmate's student number.

For example, they punch in '555-23' and student 23 stands up and they run through one of two dialogues, one for a right number and one for a wrong one. They have 90 seconds to find Fireman Sam, if they don't their house explodes. I helped narrow it down by telling them whether it was a girl or a boy.

It takes a little explaining but my kids enjoyed it a lot.

Here's period 2.

Pass the banana again to drill the additional dialogue of 'that's a good idea' and 'let's meet at ____' and a phone call game.

For this I had the students bring their phones to class and got a list of their phone numbers from the home room teacher. Try to get the list without names or cover the names up. One student makes a call at random from the phone at your desk, they run through the dialogue and based on their choices they either get a  :azn: or a  >:( in the game grid.

This can mean whatever you like, a piece of candy or a well done sticker or whatever you use to reward your students.

Is anyone still using this book? Is it worth my while uploading anything else?

Here's a Bananaphone game I pulled and changed from another thread.

Split the class into two teams and give each team a banana or phone or ball or whatever. Teams pass the objects while the music plays, and the two students who are holding the objects have to stand up and say the dialogue. Super simple, but my kids last year asked for it the rest of the year.
