I decided to make a "guess who" game. It proved more difficult than I originally thought. :(
LUCKILY, I found this website: http://www.the-leaky-cauldron.org/features/crafts/othercrafts/harrypotterguesswho
where they have created  Harry Potter "guess who" cards. I suggest printing off one color (you really don't need 3 colors of the same thing) and laminating them. That way the Ss can circle their character, cross out the characters they've ruled out, and still wipe it all away and reuse them.

To play-
1. each S chooses a character and circles it. They don't let their partner see.
2. They take turns trying to guess their partners character, by first asking, "Is it a girl/boy?" Then "Does he/she have ______ hair/_____eyes, a ______ nose."  "Is he/she wearing a color  piece of clothing?" ETC.

Here's the website again.

hrehler, that is an AWESOME idea. I can't wait to use it. I had trouble getting the Harry Potter cards to print out clearly. They are coming out all fuzzy for me. If I can't figure them out, I also found other guess who cards on the games' website. I think I might use the crazy creatures. Thanks again for the great game idea!!!!!! http://www.hasbro.com/games/discover/guesswho/

Another good idea (took this from someone else last year, thanks whoever it was) is to use this Guess Who game template and put students' pictures behind the boxes.  Change the adjectives to describe the student and then have students play.  Will be doing this next week, should be a lot of fun.

Last year's lesson about describing people: http://waygook.org/index.php/topic,1333

It was "How's your sister?" but the year before it was called "She is Tall."

**Note: A lot of this lesson seems to be review...  I checked the 4th grade YBM Maria Oh book, and they already learned descriptions last year in Lesson 10 "He Has Blue Eyes."

Sentences from 4th grade include:
He is tall. Is he your brother?
Yes, he is. He has short hair and blue eyes.
She is small. She has long hair. Is she your sister?
Yes, she's my sister. She is cute.
Is that your robot?
Yes, it is. It has six arms and two legs. It has big eyes.

Key vocab from 4th grade:
tall/short
big/small
cute/beautiful/handsome
eyes/nose/mouth
short/long hair/arms/legs

So, it seems like this lesson reviews all that, adds more hair description, and focuses on clothing/colors.  The target language of "He is wearing _____." is also new.

I posted a Harry Potter Guess Who game that I made for my summer camp
http://www.waygook.org/index.php/topic,1026.220.html
Page 12 of the Harry Potter camp thread

There is a PPT explaining the rules for Guess Who and slides to print out and laminate to make the cards.

I also have a PPT using HP characters to introduce physical description vocab with a Pass the Ball game at the end of it.

Both PPTs use Harry P and Lumos fonts which I found here:
http://www.dafont.com/harry-p.font
http://www.dafont.com/lumos.font

I printed out the pictures of the Harry Potter characters to put on the blackboard and then played a snatch game with my students. I brought up two students to try to find the correct person first and gave them three sentences describing the character. Make sure that it is impossible to know which character you are talking about until they've heard the third and final clue. If your students can't handle an activity like this without going crazy, then make it an individual game. Number the pictures and let them write down the numbers of the pictures as they figure them out. Ss with most correct answers are the winners.

I am focusing on hair first and then moving on to other descriptions.
Here is an introduction to hair vocab pptand a "She has curly red hair" pirate game.

I'll post more materials as I make them.

Anything specific for Period 2 (Look and Speak, Your Turn, Chant Along, and Play Together 2) and Period 3 (Read Aloud, Read And Think, Active Reading, Play Together 3)?

Grade 5 - Does she have curly hair? (YBM - Chapter 10)

This is very similar to last years text book. I borrowed an idea from the previous thread (though I can't recall from who). Anyhow, I have created a Guess Who game.

Instructions are simple:

CoT and NET will read 3 descriptions of a character for Ss. After reading the description, T will click the screen and Ss will be able to see 4 pictures. Ss must pick the appropriate character based on the description they heard. Ss will only have 10 sec to make their decision.

Materials:
PPT
White board
Erasers
Markers

*My Ss will be playing in groups as that is how our classroom is designed.

Possible videos for this lesson.

1) Kimchi Bandit from last year's Lesson 7.  These were a huge hit with my 5th graders last year.  Unfortunately, the lessons are all out of order for this year's book, but I might show all 4 eventually as review/rewards.  I didn't convert it after DLing the MP4, but here's the link:

http://vimeo.com/24701545

2)  She's Wearing a Red Cap video made for the other YBM book's lesson on clothing/describing people.  Also don't have a version that I can post, link here:

http://www.adamthomasphotography.com/Other/Videos-with-Subtitles/22287332_SxwHPL#!i=2008697801&k=z768d3S&lb=1&s=A

3) The Clothing Song (also attached).  I think I found this one in the old Lesson 7 thread.  I'll probably use it day 1 and make the students guess what the lesson will be about.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_cBmnRsh8Hw

4) The Mirror story from that weird Korean ESL program (Fun Fun Fun?). Also from the old lesson 7 thread (or somewhere else on this site).  Usually their stuff sucks, but this one was actually kinda funny.  I don't have a link, but you can DL it below.

Made a vocab sheet for this unit. It's an excel spreadsheet that has two handouts on one A4 paper. There are 10 words and 8 sentences that the students need to translate (with a co-teacher's help). Alternatively you can get a co-teacher to fill in the Korean sentences pre-printing if you need to save time in class.
Buy books here! Check out the Bookdepository

Guess who game.    You erase the 'X's and print out slide 4 or 5, laminate, and make a partner game also.

Here is my lesson plan, along with my picture I used for review and character cards. Laminate and cut out to make cards. (I have to do the reading section for my Grade 5's as well as speaking)

I must say I tried really hard to make a guess who game..I used the monster template and my co-teacher translated the directions. The first time I used all the images and it was a disaster..the second time I only used SIX monsters and still it was too difficult for them to understand..There are too many options and it is hard to differ the monsters from each other and also just the idea of the game was somehow too complicated for them..Unless your class is really advanced I don't know I would recommend it although it was a great idea!! I really thought it would be fantastic, too! :) Thanks anyway!! Perhaps use pop stars or just real people with actual noses and ears and no horns! ;)

Guess Who?

Another classic board game adapted for ESL. Directions and pre-teaching material are included in the PPT. I added the Mupetts slide pretty much for my own amusement and to kill time at my desk but who knows, if your kids are high level they may be able to do something with it.

Have fun!

Haha! I clearly didn't read all of the previous posts about Guess Who? You're right it was a little tricky to get it working, I have yet to spend this much time on a PPT but I think I made something that is easy to do for students and easy to excecute for teachers. Hopefully it works for some of you :)

My PPTs for this lesson.

1) Grammar ppt.  Is vs Has with illustrative pictures.  Modified from last year.

2) Simpsons practice PPT with Homework assignment.  Directs students to simpsonsmovie.com to make an avatar and bring it to share with the class.  Mostly new, with a few slides from an old PPT from last year.

3) Minesweeper Game (Simpsons Wearing).  Practice making the sentence "__ is wearing (a) ___."  Dramatically modified form an existing Minesweeper game I found in another textbook's thread.

4) Kung Fu Panda Appearances.  Reading Practice.  Slightly modified from another thread.

5) Beat the Clock game.  All new PPT based on an idea from last year (Stopwatch Game).  You will need a stopwatch / alarm app on your phone.  Made for 3 teams of 10 students, but you could easily modify it for more groups.

6) Chase the Vocab.  Uses the same sentences as Beat the Clock, since that game didn't fill the whole time.

7) The Kimchi Bandit ppt that I made to go with the video.  Make sentences describing her and her clothes, with new vocabulary words introduced first (mask, robe, tiger hat, etc.).

8 ) The Snowball Game.  New ppt based off an idea from last year.  Writing and reading practice.

9) Snowball Game writing paper.  2 per page to save a tree.

EDIT - We didn't do day 5 for this lesson, so I don't have any materials for Storyland.  The game I used for Day 6 had some problems, so I'm not posting it either.
