This Lesson plan is about the Olympic Games.

I managed to get 6h of teaching out of it :)

Here are some worksheets I made for camp. I want to teach them about countries at the same time!

Do you have the worksheets/templates for the crafts activities?

The lesson fits nicely into a 90 minute slot, and can be varied by adding or subtracting events.
I have had great feedback from the students every time I have done this class (10+ times)

The power point file is fairly self explanatory, but here is the gist:

The class begins with talking about the Olympics, where they were, where they are now (time sensitive), and when they will be in Korea.
Hand out the Olympic workbook to the students, and they write down some winter and summer sports as you go through the powerpoint.
The next slide mentions the Paralympics, and different events, and different disabilities.  This was just talked about - so there are no descriptions in the file.  At this point, use the phrases ' harder than' and 'easier than', to introduce the grammar points.
Next, there is an example of comparatives and Superlatives, that needs some in depth explaining, but the students usually picked up on it quite easily.
At this point, the students can complete the chart on the back of the Olympic workbook.

Then the Student's Olympics begin!
(There are some funny videos linked in the file - but due to time issues, they were not shown until the end).

You will need various items for the events. Here is a list of what is in this file-
Event 1 -chopsticks, timer, something for the students to move from one container to another (we used markers, and the students had to carry them with the chopsticks from one desk to another across the room)

Event 2- sticky note paper, and a wall with flat access so students can jump and stick their note.

Event 3- Coins, and a target line on the floor.

Event 4- slides provided.
This event was to outline dyslexia. A brief explanation of what dyslexia is, and what it does was given, and the students had to read the sentences correctly, and were timed. (These sentences were taken from the Grade 6 text book that I use at my school)
If you choose not to introduce the Paralympics and/or disabilities you can just call this event a word scramble.

Event 5- the results sheets provided in this file.

Points are awarded according to place-up to Event 4, and Event 5 equals 2 points per correct sentence.  First one done gets 3 points, 2nd gets 2 points and 3rd gets 1 point.

Total up the points, and award your gold medals!

Olympics PPT
40 minute class period

Play as many or as few games, depending on your class size.
We learned and sang "We are the Champions," crazy frog version (easily found on YouTube).

Players' Entrance
Players' Oath

Presentation of Medals

You can skip to games under time constraints.

Games
Javelin Throw: throw straws into cups (or plastic pumpkins, whatever you have)
Rugby: race backwards to pick up a milk carton on the other side of the room.
Boxing: find the textbook page while wearing oven mitts (or other cumbersome gloves)
Archery: spin 10x and race to high five the teacher first.
Swimming: blow up as many balloons as possible in 1 minute
Judo: pop as many balloons as possible in 30 seconds - no hands or feet allowed
Curling: try to flick the magnet into a circle
Basketball: shoe flip (instructions in Korean on the PPT)

I did not make this PPT; it was a homeroom PPT my Korean co-teacher had that I translated.
I've done a few Olympics games lessons and this was by far my favorite.

We played 4 teams of 6 students and we never made it past Judo.
