Here's a 'taboo' game for this lesson using the "Can I..." phrases.

Simple low prep activity for speaking: (It's kind of like teamed-up cops and Robbers but sitting down)  Have 1 student sit in a chair facing the board (or something so his/her back is to the class). Have his team line up in any order. (teammates don't know which Ss he's looking for, btw) Goal: Sitting student must find a certain S by 'calling' and asking 'Is ~~there?' If the S standing directly behind him is not the student he is calling for, then the S must use a key phrase like, "Sorry, wrong number" or "No, you have the wrong number, bye." and sit down. If the S standing behind him is the student he is calling, then he can say, "Yes, this is he/she." And continue having a conversation - How are you?/what are you doing? Hey, let's go to the movies...." Whatever you want the continuing conversation to be.

Another activity: Phone conversations: students will get 1 strip of paper that has a sentence from Story A Dialogue and they must memorize it to complete this activity. Once memorized, all Ss will stand up and walk around doing RSP with someone they meet and the winner says their sentence first,  then the loser. If the sentences match, then you have found your partner. If the sentences do not match, cont. playing RSP with other people. Ss that are done can sit down and practice their lines together.  Then once everyone has found their partner, do the dialogue from start to finish. Adjust according to class size and ability.

Role play with cards: Take  two chairs and put them back to back at the front of the classroom. Two Ss will come up and get Role Play cards and should do the RP accordingly. You can partner up Ss before the activity or just do it at random. While each pair is taking their turn, the other student will take notes on what is being said (they can do it in English or Korean) and include the names of the Ss and probably some detail about the conversation. That way all Ss are being engaged during this. Activity. My Ss have a hard time being still.

When finished you can have feedback time on the conversations that took place.

This game is awesome! Thank you.

Do your students have a hard time getting the expressions in the correct sentence order?

Also, I just want to point out that Rain is wearing pins/buttons with inappropriate language. My students would definitely notice the I love Sex and the f***you too since our screen is really big.

i played telephone with my kids today and they seemed to like it. i played for less than 10 minutes so i definitely wouldn't plan much longer than that since they can get bored. it's relatively low prep since i just printed out a sheet and cut the sentences into strips. I started at one side and each kid had to go down their row (there were 8 kids in a row with 3 rows in my class) and the last person in the row had to say the sentence. THere's a few different ways you can play it in regards to points (accuracy first, speed second). switch sides, etc. make sure they don't skip kids though.

my kids are pretty low level so i ended up not using anything longer than a sentence. it's a good way to get each of your kids to practice speaking.

Fun script.

1. Repeat phrases.
2. Ask students their cell numbers.
3. Cell screen swat game.  Students guess the number (fly swatter).  Students like this game fast.
          e.g. swat 543-7678.  Student 1 guesses wrong.  "Sorry, wrong number."  Student 2 guesses right.  "Hold on please/just a second/just a minute/just a moment."

I played a Top 40 K-Pop game with them too.  Wrote random numbers on quarter sheets.  On the back are K-Pop song names, the artist's name and rank.  Placed them all on the board and asked students to pick.

Winner is the student who finds #1.

E.g. Student 1: "531-0873."  Teacher: "Hold on please."  #27 song.  Teacher/Students: "Sorry, wrong number!"  Students can repeat numbers, expressions, figure out who the artist is, etc.

I've been slacking too much  and not downloading since I'm leaving Korea for good this Saturday!   Here is what I have used thus far for the lesson.  Hope it helps even if it's just a little.

The SP ppt is a ppt that can be used in conjunction with page 116.  The others are practice dialog powerpoints.    I have to spend a great deal of time making power points because my students don't like singing or acting activities.
The Trigger Happy TV clips are from a British comedy show where a man is extremely loud talking on out of date phone in the wackiest of places.   Easy enough for the students to understand and good for a quick laugh to motivate or reward your students.

I can't add the clips because waygook doesn't allow me to upload .mp4 files so here are the youtube hyperlinks.

I  also modified one of the earlier PowerPoints and added new content.

Links to songs using "Can I?"

Can I have a ball please?  Here you are.  Thank you.  (3:16)  Slow, medium, fast.

Can I have some water?  (2:15)  Duet on guitar.

Can I have a robot, please? (1:18)  British

What can you do? (1:28)

I modified the flashcard ppt posted above by rearranging the slides in a more logical order, adding a few new pictures, and including a slide at the end for students to share their own numbers.

The Hanguel romanized ppt was originally posted by another Waygook member on a different thread and I've edited it to be relevant for this lesson.  There's one slide where you'll want to enter your name for the example.  The .docx is meant to be cut into small strips for each student to write their name in Korean and English and then post it in their book or on the wall.

I played Angry birds Uno with my kids (which I got from the "how do you spell it?" post, made by katiedoe) and they absolutly adored it, so I am posting it here (with my one minor change) and I hope someone uses it.  The made me leave the cards there so they could play over their break!

This is a guessing game for the first class.  The directions might be a little complicated for my kids, so I may make them simpler in class.  Got the idea from the price guessing game for 4th graders.

On each page, there are three pics.  Two have sad faces under them, one has a smiley face under it.  Each team wants to find the smiley face in as little tries as possible.  Less tries = more points.

Here is a quick game I made for the last period.  It is to practice asking "Can I...?" and responding.  The can I questions are just pictures, but they are based on the book, so the picture of the burger would be "Can I eat a hamburger?" and Tom in a word bubble is "Can I speak to Tom?"

Hope it helps!

For this lesson first watch the youtube clip from swingers the movie from 0:00 to about 1:30sec.
Follow up with three comprehension questions
1.What is the man's name?
2.Who's he calling?
3. What's his phone number?

Follow the ppt and practice the sentences on the PPT slides. After each slide, there is a mixed up version of the sentence. I have the whole class say the correct sentence on the mixed up slide.

Next I have students practice this dialog while standing in groups standing in a line shoulder to shoulder.

A:Hello, can I speak to _________? (the blank is the student to their left).
B: Speaking.

Student B will become student A and the student to their left will become student B, making a chain of sorts.

After they have completed this, have them write their names down on a piece of paper. Have them trade papers and practice the dialog below.

A:Hello, can I speak to _________? (the blank is the student's name on the paper).
B: I'm sorry, you have the wrong number.

After they have completed this, have them trade papers again and make a race out of it. Same idea as the incorrect names, but if the name on the paper matches the student's name then they use the affirmative. Have it timed and the fastest team wins.
