Me and my co-teacher decided to switch this lesson with lesson 8. This way we can focus on the past tense section and talk about our summer vacations together with the students.

So, here is a ppt introducing some key expressions in the past tense as well as a bomb game using the same expressions.
You can print out the slides and use them as flashcards for a charades/pictionary game (my students love these)

There's nothing here to do with the transport section though, we're going to cover that next week.

I finally have some time to add some material so...here is the new words and expressions ppt for the 1st period of this lesson. There's videos in here (which may or may not work depending on your computer's macro). I tried to make it less bland than all the previous ones since it's the students first day back to class since summer vacay. I haven't tried this out yet so I don't know what the outcome will be. But I hope it works out for someone.

I'm going to take a poll of the class and find out how they get to school and how they get to the supermarket. If you have any ideas of other destinations to put on the worksheet, I'd be interested.

I'm thinking park... friend's house... something like that?

This would be done as a group. Each student gets a poll to fill out, and they have 15 minutes to ask everyone in the class how they get to school/supermarket/friend's house/park.

I just made this to go with the first period.  it's just really simple review of some of the terms used and modes of transportation.  Also, my kids are obsessed with Minecraft, so I'm hoping it will keep their interest

Dice Game: I will use in period 4.
How to play:
Student A rolls dice and asks the question (e.g.) Did you go there by ____?
Students B rolls dice and answers (e.g.) Yes, I did/No, I went there by ____.
If student B rolls 3 or 4 - multiply by 2 so they get 6 or 8 points
If student B rolls 1 or 6 - multiply by -1 so they get -1 or -6 points
If student B rolls 2 or 5 - multiply by 1 so they get 2 or 5 points

Vocabulary sheet is given out in period 1 and can be referred to in other lessons.
Role play is memorised and tested in period 5-6

Writing test sheet is given out in period 1 and tested in period 7.
Students must do writing for homework.

This clip is the trailer for Planes, Trains and Automobiles.

You can pause for each mode of transportation and have students elicit responses.

He/They went there by bus, taxi, foot, airplane, car, truck

Hi there ~

Great posts already, love the minecraft game - Here's a very simple PPT game I made relating to this chapter.

Its based on the game "hot-seat", there are tons of ways to play it. This way involves teams and one player from each team facing away from the screen and the other team members describing the picture to the player in the hot seat.

I tailored to make it relevant to Daejeon, as the kids enjoy references like that, tweak it to make relevant to your area.  It goes transport/destination/transport/destination....

This activity went over very well with our students.

I introduced the lesson with a sketch of a businessman and homeless man. I asked the students what these words meant. I told them we were going to watch a short film where they were the main characters. I wanted them to think about what those characters did.

I showed this video:

I followed up by asking some basic concept checking questions. (What is the businessman like? What is his problem? Who helps him? etc).

Then, I had the students give me verbs in the past tense to describe the story. I wrote these on the board. You can write the verbs done by each character around the sketch from earlier.

Some verbs: drank, begged, gave, got, stole, tried, bought, ordered, lost, found, arrived, opened, helped, etc.. They came up with so many verbs. I was very impressed.

Following this, they chose either the businessman or the homeless man and described his day in their English notebooks. They had to write at least 3 sentences. Volunteers who read their sentences received one stamp.

Overall, it took about 20 minutes.

Play Bingo.

Have students draw a form of transportation out of a hat/box/whatever.
T: “Did you go there by train?”
S: “No, I went there by bus.”

Whatever form of transportation the student says, the rest of the students must mark that square on their bingo card. Whoever gets two llines, wins a prize.

The bingo cards wouldn't attach but you can make your own on one of those free bingo card making websites.

Day 6 Line Bingo:

Give the students each a slip of paper and have them write one sentence in each box in the form "I usually go to the ______ by ______" like in the book.  Play line bingo.  Read/call out a sentence.  If a student has that sentence written in either of the boxes at the end of the strip of paper, they can rip that square off.  The first student with only three boxes left wins.

The file for the paper strips is attached.  It's plain, I know.  You could always put pictures in the boxes for each one instead of having the students write the sentences, but I figured having them do some writing wouldn't hurt.

Here is a game I played with the students after after adverbs of frequency is taught The students made groups of 4 with their desk and took turns writing down the answer on small white boards. They were given a point if they wrote out the sentence correctly and guessed the correct picture or word. My classes loved it.

My coteacher has begun a campaign heavily focused on writing activities, so here are the worksheets I've created for Story A and Story B.   You can find the text in both languages on the CD if your coteacher is absent from class, so students are still able to translate.

Also, a short explanation of how we played Bingo with transportation, and the review worksheet after the lesson.  Students took it like a quiz and were assigned homework of writing incorrect answers in their English notebooks x number of times.

Grade 6 - Lesson 9 - Period 2

Story B

Listen and Speak

TALK AND PLAY

This ppt is for the talk and play section of the lesson.  I used the original 2 characters in the book and added myself and my co-teacher.  Print and cut the PPT and put the cards into envelopes.

Let me explain how to play.
  1) Get into groups of four.  I will give you an envelope with some cards inside.
2) The student in the front right corner will go first.  Then continue playing by going around the circle in your group.
3) The first player will take a card.  Do not show the other students in the groups.
4) Follow the dialog on the paper in the center of your table.
The student who chose the card is S1.  The other students are Ss
5) While doing the dialog, the other students should find out whose role S1 is playing by looking in your book.
6) If everyone in the group give the correct names, S1 shouts “Bingo!”
7) If all the other students guess the same name correctly, your group gets a point.
8) If you guess the card correctly, the card is set aside as one point.  If you guessed incorrectly, that card gets shuffled back into the deck.
9) The group with the most cards at the end of the game wins.

Grade 6 - Lesson 9 - Period 1

Introduction PPT - This is a ppt I modified to teach the target language of the lesson.

1) listen and repeat the kinds of transportation several times and see if the students can remember them in order.

2) Listen and repeat, "Where did you go?" several times and ask the students its meaning.

3) listen and repeat the locations and "I went to the..."  2 times.  Then go back and then the students, "It's your turn."   Ask the students the "Where did you go?" question and have them give the answer in sentence form by looking at the location on the screen.

4)Then move on to the next question, "Did you go there by subway?"  Tell them to answer, "Yes, I did" by asking them several "Did you go there by...?" questions.

5) Finally, practice, "No, I went there by..." by asking them a mode of transportation that does not correspond to the slide on the screen.

Then

Story A

Listen and Speak

we didn't have time to do 'Listen and Stick', so we will start with it next time as a review for Period 2.

Another video activity and worksheet.

This goes with the Arthur episode here: http://pbskids.org/arthur/video/index.html
It's titled 'Big Day' on that website but the actual segment I'm showing is called 'Just Desserts.' Turn on the closed captioning before showing it. I will be showing the first 6-7 minutes.

2 a) on the worksheet sounds best with 'is' but they should use 'was' since we are reviewing past tense.

I also downloaded a special font for the title. If you don't have it installed it will display with a basic font. You may want to change it. I was using a downloaded font called Showcard Gothic.

This could be a funny/useful video for motivation. Before playing it ask the students to pick out the different types of transportation in the video. (plane, train, car, subway)

This is an old film about three different ways Canadians went to school.

http://www.nfb.ca/film/off_to_school

It's old but I found it interesting! I think the students would be surprised as well.
