Materials:

- Worksheet with vocab, functions, etc.
- Simple vocab powerpoint
- Powerpoint reviewing time and introducing a few colloquial expressions

Also, this is the most idiotic, inane and foolish chapter of them all.  Teaching "It's time to _____" and "What can we do for _____?" is absolutely useless.  Where do they pick the set phrases?  Going with a Kung Fu Panda theme for this one.

Here is a really simple handout I made for lesson one. It matches what I got of here for fifth grade. I like them to match. It has vocabulary, the dialogue, and key sentences for the chapter.

i made this 4 corners game with the rules included in the ppt. people will choose a corner. whoever is standing at the corner that appears on the screen will be elimated. students have to say the sentences before or after they choose a corner, pretty intuitive.

im also including this survey paper that students can fill out about ideas to reduce reuse and recycle. my students are at a good enough level that most of them can do this.

Here is a comic strip writing exercise I modified from a previous post on this site.  There are 6 different scenarios, and I gave one to each group.  The students must finish the comic, writing dialogue and drawing pictures.  Our school is having a big enironment-themed open day, so I will display the comics and ask the teachers to judge the best.

I hear ya Matt. My co taught me a game she calls Running Dictation. It's a listening/reading/writing activity.

Here's how it works: split the class into 6 groups. Write 6 sentences on a piece of paper and print 6 copies (changing the order of sentences on each piece of paper) and tape them to the walls in different parts of the room. Assign each team a paper so they don't all try go for the same one.

Each team chooses 1 "writer". Everyone else is a "runner". In relay format, runners must "run" to their teams paper, read/memorize a sentence, come back and dictate it to the teams writer. Then the next person goes. The first team to successfully write out the 6 sentences (with no mistakes) is the winner.

Gets them out of their seats for a minute and I find it's more engaging than the bomb games.
