Last Class - Ideas
« on: January 18, 2011, 12:22:30 PM »
My co-teacher wants a game for 5th graders when I teach with her while she is planning to show a movie on the last day. Does anyone have any ideas for a fun game that lasts most of the period.  We already played Jeopardy before winter break and reviewed lessons 9-15.

Any suggestions would be great and much appreciated.
Thxs!

I don't know if it was a popular game show but when I grew up in Canadian there was a tv show called Classic Concentration.  There were tiles covering a hidden puzzle.  Each person took turns removing a tile and trying to guess what the puzzle was underneathe.

I did this with my students using pictures to make a phrase they had learnt before.

For example there could be a picture of a monkey, a tin can and a tree...  A monkey can climb a tree.

Here is a concentration template I found on this site...  Not sure who created it, but excellent work.  My elementary students go out of their way to try to solve the puzzle.

My co-teacher just wants to watch videos for grade 5 and 6 classes during the last week, but I'd like to do something fun and interesting. Anyone have ideas that will motivate them to participate and enjoy themselves?

Honestly, watch the video. The kids don't want to be there and there's no reason for anyone to be in school. It's these 2 weird weeks dangling off the semester like a wart.

I have an idea to play 3 or 4 short animations (found on Youtube).  Then follow up each video with the pass-the-ball game and asking some questions about the video.  I'm not promising that it will be a hit but the videos were well recieved during Hermes camp and my students always like the pass-the-ball game.  Good luck.  This is usually a tough week, behavior-wise.

G5 did past tense as part of lesson 16.  Maybe preteach some verbs (most applicable maybe one or two that aren't) before showing the video, then show a short video, and then do the pass-the-ball game suggested above?

Chubb-chubb videos could also work (Sony's attempt at eclipsing Pixar).  Things starring Bernard Bear (Bakkom?) might also be usable, depending on which video you choose and what vocab you want to cover.

Egg Drop!! :D :D :D
« Reply #9 on: February 08, 2011, 03:11:17 PM »
Hola,

My CT wanted to do the same, but I managed to talk her around to organising an Egg Drop.

It was easy, prior to the lessons, we simply messaged the home room teachers and asked the kids to split off into 6 teams. Between the team members we requested that they bring 2 eggs each and choose material that they wanted to make the contraption for the eggs. Suggestions were: straws, wooden chopsticks, rubber bands, balloons, small cardboard boxes, cotton wool etc.

Then we took 2 x 40 min classes.

Lesson 1:
We collected the eggs from the students at the start of the lesson to save any mishaps!!!

Introducing the target language such as apparatus, material, design and listing the suggested items on the board. We just had the students hold up the material as we went down the list of words.

Then we showed parts of the following youtube clip:

Pausing periodically throughout the clip to ask the students what materials they heard and what they saw. We skipped the part about the physics and then fast tracked to the bit where they dropped the contraptions.

Each team was then given a piece of paper to draw some ideas as a team of what they planned to make, they were then asked to label the drawing. CT & NSET monitored the teams, advising of any different material that popped up and what it was called.

We told them that they couldn't have their eggs until they showed us their idea and explained it to us.

Then they started creating their apparatus which rolled into Lesson 2.

We completed the last of the creations, giving them about 10-15 minutes.

Then off we went to drop the eggs. From Level 3 of our building, 2 people from each team came down to the ground level with myself and the others stayed up on Level 3 to drop the eggs. We counted down together and then the kids just pretty much combusted from excitement as they threw things out the window  ;D Of course you need to wait for all the students to come down to check the results together.

The kids loved it and were extremely enthusiastic. We've done this with Grade 3, 5 & 6 so far.

Just an idea!!

Cheers,

LR

My 6th graders are finished with their textbook, so for the last day of class we wanted to do a meaningful activity.

We rearranged the classroom so the desks were in a giant circle.

Each student got a piece of construction paper and wrote their name really big in the middle (they could also draw a picture or give themselves a funny title) then they passed the papers around and wrote things on their friends papers (yearbook style).

They had to write mostly in English but they could use some Korean words as well. So on their last day of English class they each got to leave with positive messages from all their classmates (and teachers!)

Stuff to do in the last classes.
« Reply #11 on: February 08, 2011, 03:57:21 PM »
Here are a few things I'm using in the last classes since we have finished the text and the kids could care less about learning anything.

What happens next? is pretty simple.  Just watch the video from the youtube link on the worksheet and have the students try to guess what happens next in each clip.

The card game is something I put together for camp.  Other people have made some outstanding versions but this one is about as simple as it gets.  Have the students create their characters and fill in their attributes (speed, strength, stamina, intelligence).  Next, they will find someone in the room, both students put their character face down and then play rock, scissors, paper.  The winner chooses a sentence from one of the four attributes.  For example, "I'm stronger than you."  If that student's character has more strength than the other students, then they steal the card.  Its fun for them to draw the characters and they have fun trying to collect the most cards.

Crazy circle game is pretty fun but you can almost guarantee that it will get out of hand.  Nonetheless, they always have fun.  Sit in a circle with one less chair then there are students.  Each student should have a strip with four words on it.  The student in the center says a sentence using the word.  If another student has that word on their strip they must quickly change seats.  Whoever is left standing loses one of their words.  I usually play this game and as students run out of words, and are thus out of the game, I give them the card game worksheet to start making their characters.

Another game uses the "verbs" ppt.  Put however many students you want(4-6) in front of the screen in chairs.  They can't look at the screen while their teammates use only English and movements to try and get their teammate to say the word on the screen.

Honestly, nothing is original here.  These are other people's ideas that I've sort of messed with to make them work in my class.  I'm sure you can change some things around to fit your class as well.  If anyone does use any of these please let me know how it went and give me any suggestions you may have for improving anything.

One thing I used to do for the last classes of summer school was " letters on the back."

You'll need A4 paper (1 piece for each student), soft-tip felt pens (ditto), envelopes (ditto), some sellotape, and some floorspace.

Procedure: Call out each student and stick a sheet of A4 on their backs. Give them each a felt tip pen. Tell them they have to write a goodbye message on each of their classmate's backs: It could be something like " nice to have met you; good luck for the future; I like your smile" etc. They're not allowed to see what is being written.

Call time at the appropriate moment - the students come to you, and you remove the A4 paper and put it in an envelope. Give the envelope to the student and tell them that they can't open it until they get home/back to their town/country.

With 10 students this can last for 20mins plus. For bigger classes, the sky's the limit.

I would say let them watch a movie, but I like the second poster's idea. That's something nice and sentimental that the students can old on to. My only concern with that is that my students don't really have a grasp on "well wishes" or anything of the sort. They can say the goodbye/nice to meet you/ see you agains etc, but nothing more. Maybe the class before the final class could be spent talking about those kinds of expressions.

Can they write?

Scattergories is fun and requires almost no prep at all. You can do any topic with it.

Watch k-pop videos and talk about the fashion. Girls will love it. Boys will call you gay behind your back (if you're a dude). Then you can show some English music videos and do simple compare/contrast. It's a hoot, I assure you.  Just try to avoid the videos where women shake their asses at the camera. Unless your coteacher is AWOL.

I'll post the power point slides.(I like using power point slides because I don't have to remember lesson procedure, and I can manage my lesson more systematically.)

You can check this.

The detailed directions are included.

This is the activity of showing two irrelevant pictures, and get the students to write a funny sentence.

You have to pose the time limit(I give 10 minutes to move to the next pictures)

Students love this activity, and you can have the chance to introduce new vocabulary.

The sentence seemingly perfect in grammar doesn't get the score.

Rather the sentence ridiculous and weird gets the point.

When you decide on which sentence is hilarious, then write it on the board to amuse the whole class together.

I'm coming back soon.

Check the power point slides.

The activity is called 'back to the board.'

It's really easy to prepare this activity.

You have only to prepare some simple sentences leveled at the elementary school students.(You can find one from the textbook.)

Pick one volunteer and have him or her sit in front of the board.

Write one sentence on the board, and let other students give some hints or clues to the volunteer.

The volunteer should speak the exact or close sentence to get the score for the group.

The sentence learned from the textbook would be the best choice.
