Other Middle School textbooks
« on: August 23, 2012, 01:26:22 PM »
Hi,

I was wondering if anyone was using the Edward Roland Grey Middle School textbooks to teach their third graders. If you are how the hell do you cull material from that book to plan a lesson?

I use this text book for 3rd and 2nd grades... there used to be a thread for it. Mods, do you think we can create a thread and pin it? Or else find the one that used to exist? I've been looking but haven't been able to locate.

I use it for one 2nd grade class. I teach the listening section and I usually google search the key expressions or language function for some ideas and then reuse an activity from my other school/grades that can be modified to accommodate the target language. But it would be really nice to have a thread for these books.

I use these books as well. My five CTs haven't been that clear about to what extent I'm supposed to use them. At first I was using the themes to make games, which wasn't working (obviously). Now I glean a main grammar point or two and ignore the themes completely.

So for MS2 - L3 for example, rather do a google search (site:waygook.org  "relative pronouns") or something and use one of those lessons rather than using the "how to well on a test" rubbish.

A thread would be great but not sure there are enough of us for it to be super useful - there's plenty on waygook that can be adapted.

I agree, Tangerine, except I have to teach the listening parts to low level kids, so that is a lot of pretty specific vocabulary and grammatical structures, idioms even. Sometimes I can adapt something, but more often I am making materials from scratch.
Then again, it keeps me busy ;)

Currently working on my lesson plan for 3rd grade, lesson 2. It's so bad. Full of uncommon expressions and simple grammar mistakes...

yeah, i presented my first lesson for chapter 2. Decided to do a lesson on the present continuous, present perfect and present perfect continuous. It was so boring and dry even i had trouble keeping interest. All my other classes have textbooks that make planning a lesson easy but the Edward Roland Grey textbook is definitely the bane of my teaching existence.
