Grade 6 - Lesson 10: May I Try Some? (대교 - Daegyo)
« on: August 24, 2012, 02:42:02 PM »
Here is an introduction, followed by a few activities. First, there is a fill-in-the-blank dialogue.  Second, I will be reading a sentence that matches one of the pictures and each team will have to guess which picture is the correct one.  Third, I got this idea from someone who posted in Grade 5, Lesson 10, to give the students a number and a response to the question (two students will answer at the same time). When their number shows up, they must stand, read the response, then play rock, scissor, paper with the other person, and whoever wins gets the point.  I'm also attaching a Doraemon game.

Grade 6 Lesson 10: May I try some? (대교)
« Reply #1 on: August 27, 2012, 01:19:49 PM »
I adapted the classic children's game "Mother, May I?" to a board game. There are too many students in my classes to actually have them get up and play the real game. Also, this gets all the students speaking.

In the file, the first board is very simple for low-level students, the second is normal and contains both target expressions for Period 2 (Sure, you can/Sorry, you can't and You must ___ [first]). Students are in teams of four.

Instructions:
1. One student is the Mother and places his/her eraser on the "Mother" square. Other students put their erasers on a "START" column.
2. Student 1 asks, "Mother, may I (play computer games)?" They can choose any square to move to; they don't have to go in succession.
3. If the Mother answers "Sure, you can," S1 can move to that space. If the Mother says "Sorry, you can't," S1 cannot move and it's the next player's turn.
4. The first person to finish is the new Mother.

In the normal game, the Mother answers and then gives a command before the other player can move.

Example:
S1: Mother, may I try some fruit?
Mother: Sure, you can. But you must stand up and sit down first./Sorry, you can't. You must go back one space.

If the formatting is off, set the margins to "minimum" and that should fix it. Feel free to change whatever you need to fit your class.

I did a short intro and a game. My students don't pay much attention to the book much but they pay more attention with the game and it gets them motivated. I used Chase the Vocab for part 1.

i feel like this lesson is kind of lacking..i tried to come up with other things to ask permission for.  i found this idea for an "ask the magic genie game" online and made up some instructions for it.  they basically have to make as many wishes as they can in 30 seconds using may/can/could questions.

No, I don't. You should contact the creator of the template for that. Search "Gangnam Style Bomb Game" under game templates.

My class sizes are pretty huge, so this sometimes limits what activities I can do.
One that worked was the Four Corners game.

I typed up 16 sentences (questions and responses) on 8 bits of paper.
E.g "Can I have your hand phone? Sure you can, but you must fight me first" The funnier the better, always use stuff like B1AF and Minecraft. They love that obv

I stick two pieces of paper in each corner of the room, i get 8 students up, whilst i close my eyes they run to a corner. I read out a sentence, if a student is standing next to that they are O-U-T OUT. Then continue.
It sounds super basic but we had a blast playing this, it is very easy to get more out of the kids by winding them up/making them chant and repeat etc and putting loads of effort in yourself.

This can be a DRY lesson when you have 35+ kids in a class

Some people call this game Sparkle. It is a version of the same game, but my students couldn't say sparkle and were having a hard time understanding it so I simplified it to just the DIE game.

You write a word on the board or power point related to the lesson. Select a student to start. They say the first letter of the word. The next student says the next letter. When the letters are all finished the next student says the word or a phrase using the word. The student after that DIES. If you let all of your students yell DIE, they really like it. Then you start again with the first letter. If a student messes up or doesn't follow the order they DIE and you continue where the last correct student left off. The last student standing gets a point for their team.

Here are a few activities I made.  You may find them useful if you're allowed to deviate a little from the textbook.  Luckily I don't have to use it at all...

May I food game:  This ppt introduces countable/ non countable foods and the terms we use for them- i.e. May I try some/ a/ an....  It finishes with a game in which teams should pick a food using the correct question form.  The rest of the class then answers back according to the symbol behind each food (a tick or cross).  1 point for a tick, no points for a cross.

Food worksheet:  Using the same foods from the ppt, students write the correct question on the lines next to each picture.  I then use it to play a paired game in which one student asks his or her partner for each food.  They then play rock paper scissors.  If the asking student wins, they 'get' that food, and can tick the box.  The first student to get all of the foods wins.

Desert Island Game:  This game encourages creative thinking as well as again helping to drill 'May I' questions. The idea is that the students are stranded on a desert island with nothing to help them.  They then play a game in which they ask the teacher (and later each other) for useful items, using 'May I have/ May I borrow...."  Basically, you're best off reading the ppt to get a clear explanation. You'll also need to print off the list of items and keep it somewhere the students can't see it.  (I made cards out of them that I could give to the teams.)  I also let my students use english/korean dictionaries to help them out.   It could definitely use more refining, so please let me know if you have any ideas to improve it.  I can say that my classes have  had a great time with it so far.

This game sounds fantastic! I only have one student in my class though so its a little tough:( But I might try this, it seems like something he would love!
Thank you
