Luckily for you guys, Astronomy is my favorite branch of science. I have my usual handout and some other stuff if you guys have extra time. The bomb game is a bit advanced for many students. I spent a month teaching an after school class about Astronomy and they have a very easy time with the bomb game. If you work with higher level students, they will get a kick out of the game. If you search this site, type in "Astronomy Lesson." You will find more things I made for after school classes that you can use. Enjoy

I used the amazing Avengers game template somebody else made and adapted it for this chapter.

First there is a rock, scissor, paper game.  I will cut this worksheet into strips and the kids have to find their match. I made twelve lines because I only have 12 in my class. The kids RSP each other and the winner gets to speak first with one of their "I'd like to..." sentences. If the opponent has the matching strip they have to read it and hand it over to the winner. This continues until all the matches are found. I may give each student three or four phrases each.

Next is a worksheet with the same sentences but they have to fill in the blanks. Should be easy for them, but a good review. I tried to add some vocab to make the key expressions a little more realistic and less awkward.

I'm planning to use this website to kill a few minutes and to blow a few minds (including my own).

I started with The Animaniacs- Yakko's Universe as a warmup.

I elicited this vocabulary to start with and had the students listen during the video and tell me what they heard after.

I tweaked the previously uploaded Pokemon game to fit with the chapter.
Also, Iron Man 3 Bomb Game.

Enjoy!

EDIT: Reloaded the Iron Man game because the sound wasn't working!

A few quick questions:

the book says "What do you eat in the spaceship". Isn't "on the spaceship" more correct?

Also, is "how about ...ing" phrase used anymore? I think "Let's ..." is a lot more commonly used.

I want to double check because I found "Do you want this noodle" in Grade 6 (same publisher) and having been in Korea for a long time I don't trust my English anymore.

I agree. I think "ON the space ship" sounds more natural although I'm not a grammar expert...

''How about...ing" is quite an awkward expression as well, although I'm not sure if it's grammatically incorrect. "Do you want this noodle" from the Grade 6 book most certainly IS wrong. I taught my students that it should be "Would you like to try SOME NOODLES?" or "DO you want some noodles?"

Unfortunately, I have to use both of the Maria Oh YBM books for grades 5&6 and they're equally terrible.  Also, the phrase "Can you join us?" always sounds weird to me as well, and it's all over the place in both books!

I personally think it's weird that they say "spaceship".  For me, a spaceship is just for aliens...A space shuttle is for astronauts.

The perfect song for this chapter, using "I'd like" lyrics.

Here's an unscramble game I made for this chapter. It's a simple format, similar to the Blazing Pens games I've seen on this site, where students must write the sentence in the correct order. I have my students to write their answers on mini white boards, but you could just use paper instead.  ;D

Here's some alright materials for the first class. New vocab ppt with the key words (the pictures are quite lovely too) and then the key expression "I'd like to..." and then briefly followed by "can you join us?"

I tend to shy away away from introducing 2 new expressions (with variances) in the first class, hence the exclusion of "how about +ing", which is rubbish, by-the-by!

Second ppt is a standard pass the ball with 18 slides. Quite long but I found an opportunity to sneak in some revision from the earlier lessons (go swimming, grandparents house etc...) with the onus on "I'd like to" every time. Some of these pics were cropped from you guys months ago so you might remember some!

Lastly, just a bog-standard introduction to the planets. A still of each one in order and then all collected together. Can probably make a fun memory game from this PPT but I'm not quite there yet.

Anyhow, hope you enjoy!

This is a nice song.  http://youtu.be/XoteMQ6w0SE Should be slow enough for kids to follow along. I made a fill in the blank worksheet for it. I usually play it about three times to give them several chances to fill them in then check it and sing together.

Speaking game for "I'd like to" grammar point.

Got this template from the 6th grade lesson, "May I See Your Ticket?"

All Ss stand up. Going down the line, each Ss chooses a square and forms the sentence, "I'd like to + ________." Teacher clicks on square, if there is an "O" the student is safe. If there is an "X" the student is out and sits down. After making it through the class once, go through again with the Ss that are still standing. Continue until only one student is standing. There are enough slides for a class of 30 students. If you have more than that, you'll have to add more slides.

To keep the other Ss involved, I'll have all of my Ss say the sentence when someone gets out.

This is a good video clip. I was planning on using the same song but with this version- It's a picture of Ernie with the lyrics written out. Not sure which one I'll end up using but this lyrics version might be helpful for someone else.

I made two sets of these cards for a musical chairs game. I placed one on each desk. I played the song I left above "I'd like to teach the world to sing" and had them walk around. When I stopped the music I said a sentence about what I'd like to do and the people that found that square got a point.

I'm also making X's and O cards for the second game, since the book has a single card for both, which makes no sense to me. That way, it randomizes yes or no answers. So I intend to use the cards again next week for the speaking portion.

Some PPTs.

1) Color Memory Game.  Downloaded the original from the old 6th Grade lesson "Would you like to come to my house?"  Changed all the cards and the timing of the animations.  Pretty fun!  (Ss make sentences based on the cards using "I'd like to..."

2) Let's VS How about ---ing.  Explains the difference in construction (verb or verb+ing).  This was from last year's Lesson 8 "How about playing baseball?" but I modified it for this lesson, some.

3&4) Dice Game.  Ss make their own sentences for the pictures using "How about..." or "I'd like to...Can you join us?", throw the dice to answer and get their score.  I used the dice template from the DVD materials for Day 3, also attached [Answer Die].  (Actually only one DIE, but I printed two DICE and played with 3 teams.)

5&6) Clapping Game.  Reading game, actually based on the Look and Speak dialog from Day 2 but I ended up playing it day 3.  When the students are OUT, I gave them a word search and they could come back into the game after finding 2 words.  (You can print the word search 2 per page to save paper.)
