Halloween or movie-like episode <40minutes?
« on: October 22, 2012, 12:13:49 PM »
HELP! My coteacher is sick today so the schedule of the whole school changed and I will be teaching ALL the first grade middle schoolers and all the second grade middle schoolers together in one class each (small school, but still a lot of kids in one class). I was directed to show them something like a movie, but it has to be middle-school appropriate, within 40 minutes long (strictly told NOT to show a movie because kids will complain and want to watch the rest of it in future classes), and it must have Korean subtitles. I need a video by 4th period and have no idea where to start. This happened once before and I showed The Simpsons but these kids hate The Simpsons...think they're tired of it...any other ideas!? :o I think a Halloween episode would be cool since it's coming up next week, but anything will do as long as I can stream it and it has subtitles!

You can find a lot of American shows with Korean subtitles there. I suggest showing them The Middle. It's very family friendly and my kids enjoyed it. Each episode is 20 minutes. You can either do 2 episodes or do a trivia game at the end after the 1st one. Here's what I made for their Halloween episode from Season 3. They have a Halloween episode from Season 2 as well. I suppose you could show both of those.

ps. Don't be fooled by the attachment name. I took the template and directly added my questions, so the name hasn't changed.

The video doesn't have talking (was made for English speaking audience) but it's Korean made and has Korean music in it.
Not Halloween but it's a cute love story. Deals a bit with racism and is set in Korea.
Absolutely no questionable content.

There are 5 videos. Each is about 5 mins long. If you end after one video you can ask basic questions to fill the time in between. Basic Who, What, Where questions. Did this with 6th graders but since there is no talking I'm sure you can use it for younger kids.

I think the website is Daum.net and then somewhere from there, but there are a bunch of videos on the Korean sites.  Think of your favorite, appropriate show and just find the Halloween Special.

Big Bang Theory has one that I recall being appropriate enough for Middle.
Modern Family has one out there.
If you can find it, I doubt people here know Nightmare Before X-mas.

The Halloween episode of The Middle (season 3 episode 7) is totally inappropriate for school. The mother at some point tells the father "daughters who are closer to their fathers have sex at an older age" and the big question that the daughter is asking throughout the episode  is "what do boys want?" Dont show it in class...

Well, I think it depends on how conservative you are. I showed that very episode to my 1st  and 2nd years with no problem. And it was with my super prim older co-teacher, who didn't bat an eye. For one thing, the line about sex goes by so fast, most of them won't catch it. For another, the question "What do boys (or girls for that matter) want?" is on all of their minds anyway. It's middle school. I find Sue to be a very relevant character for them to see. She embodies all the awkwardness and anxiety that is adolescence!

I also wouldn't say they are encouraging girls to fit themselves into "what boys want". Sue tries to follow that sort of advice and ends up still just being Sue, true to her dorky self. I think they are acknowledging that that is a common question teenagers ask, and giving a pretty accurate portrayal of it, without really giving much of a "message".

Obviously, it's up to your discretion as a teacher. Each person should view material before showing it anyway. It's poor teaching if you just trust in other people's materials and teaching choices without checking them before class.

Don't take my word for it, or anyone else's. Judge for yourself^^

ps. I'd also like to add that some of our middle school students are probably sexually active. Don't let the fact that this is Korea or their cute little uniforms fool you! A lot of middle school students smoke, drink, and have sex, despite what the old men that run this country would like to believe!

A new episode is airing tomorrow. From the brief synopsis, it looks relatively safe.  The translators seem to be able to translate quickly so hopefully they can upload it before next week.

"The Middle: Halloween III: The Driving
As Halloween approaches, the Hecks get quite the scare when Sue receives her learner's permit, and it's time for Frankie and Mike to teach her how to drive. But when a freaked-out Sue loses her nerve, she ends up running over Axl's foot, which could put an end to his high school football career and his hopes for a scholarship. Meanwhile Axl looks forward to voting in his first election, and Brick undergoes an unexpected transformation when he eats too much Halloween candy.

Source: ABC
Episode number: 4x6
Airdate: Wednesday October 24th, 2012"

I'm trying to watch the episode and they seem super choppy. Is it supposed to be that way? I've never seen it. The background stays the same, but the characters move around jerkily.

Um, no. Try re-loading it and checking your internet connection. It may work better in IE, too. Korean websites don't always work so well in other browsers...

Donald Duck - Trick or Treat (this is good for any age group)

pretty much any Treehouse of Horror from the Simpsons

The best episode of any show regarding Halloween was Buffy the Vampire Slayer "Halloween" Season 2, where a magic spell turned everyone into their costumes. Willow became a ghost, Buffy became a 19th century belle who fainted a lot, Xander became a soldier, etc.  I can't find it anywhere, but highly recommend it.

Also "The Halloween Tree" is probably the best hour of animation on the subject outside of Nightmare Before Christmas. It was on Youtube but it got taken down. :(

Best for last. The Tale of the Twisted Claw from "Are you Afraid of the Dark?" and all 3 parts are on Youtube. It's about 25 minutes long and I think it would make the perfect lesson.

"It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" is a classic option at 25 minutes, though I'm sorry I'm too late to help the original poster.  It's not available on YouTube but if you're into torrenting, it's available.  Waygook won't let me upload the subtitles but you can find them on gom.gomtv.com/main/index.html?ch=subtitles&pt=l&menu=subtitles.
