High School English - Johanna L. Haas
« on: November 16, 2012, 03:52:16 PM »
I'm at a rural high school, relatively low-level, and my first graders use "High School English" - on the cover is the name Johanna L. Haas, a blond cartoon man in red pants, and a cartoon lion surfing a blue book. I searched once before for this book, but only found Johanna L. Haas for middle school. If there's an existing thread for the book, please point me that way! Otherwise, I'm posting what I have thus far. First time posting, so if it would be better to send this over to a different general thread, just let me know.

This is from Lesson 7 - A Trip to Famous Museums in Europe. The material deals with directions and recommendations. There's a prezi with some flash mobs to play as an example for the students, then they plan their own flash mob with the worksheet. The higher levels really got into this, although the lower level classes were thoroughly unimpressed. It goes along with the second "Listen and Talk" section for the chapter, but could work with a different directions lesson just fine.

Lesson 7: A Trip To Famous Museums In Europe

These worksheets are for the first two classes on Lesson 7. Students make up and draw a city on the moon, then give directions using the map. In the next class, they make a tourist brochure for their city (the "recommendations" part of the lesson). I had them do these worksheets in pairs and the flash mob activity above in groups of 3 or 4.

The draw-a-map activity is for all levels, but the brochure activity is only for the higher levels. There's a prezi that goes with it if anyone wants it, but it's really not essential.

Lesson 6: Six Influential People Who Never Lived
« Reply #2 on: November 16, 2012, 04:19:58 PM »
Worksheets for Lesson 6, "Six Influential People Who Never Lived". The focus of the lesson is on asking for and giving opinions. The phrases for the lesson are "How did you like...", "It was...", "Why do you think...", and "Because...".

The first class, I showed the title song and dance from "Singin' In The Rain". Students did a simple gap fill worksheet with the lyrics. I talked a bit about the cultural influence of the song and musical before playing the clip, and afterwards the class discussed why they thought the musical was so popular and some reasons that they did or didn't like it. Some classes loved it, some were bored with it. For the classes that didn't like it (they thought it was too old), I introduced the term "dated".

For the second class, I replaced the textbook talking exercise with a worksheet (basically the same conversation). The students didn't recognize too many of the movies the book gave as options, and they don't like to do the "make your own" option unless it's on a separate worksheet, so that's what this is.

Almost forgot, this prezi goes with the movie worksheet for Lesson 6. It's a short presentation on the many adaptations of Sherlock Holmes with a list of the top 10 grossing movies of all time (adjusted to remove sequels, since it's for the conversation exercise). The book had a fair bit about Sherlock Holmes, so I thought it might be interesting to give a little more backstory. It's by no means comprehensive and probably only semi-accurate, since it was just meant to show a sampling of adaptations. Just a heads up: pretty much everyone recognized the RDJ/Ritchie version, and pretty much no one recognized anything else.
