WTF pictures for writing games
« on: December 12, 2012, 04:36:20 PM »
I gathered a bunch of WTF pictures from across the internet and put them into a Power Point, along with animated REAL or FAKE labels and brief explanations of the pictures.

You can use them for a lot of writing games, depending on the level of your students. I break my middle school students into teams of 3 to 6  and have them write sentences following a rule such as "You must use an adjective." I give a bonus point for a sentence with no errors. The team with the most points gets prizes.

Of course, they'd also be good for short story writing exercises for more advanced students or just for listing words for beginners.

After each class has played that week, I move the used photos to the end.

Some WTF photos for a drawing game.

one person faces photo, other faces away. back to back
person facing describes to the other.
the facing away draws the image.

together they develop a title for the photo.

Lots of success in afterschool classes.

This is an absolutely wonderful lesson. Thank you!

Great idea.

One tiny unimportant thing: I believe the cow massage is an ad for chocolate. Milka is a Swiss Chocolate brand.

But I don't think anyone is going to be failing any English tests because of that :)

This is good, except that all of the "Fake" ones are obviously fake.

But a lot of the real ones look obviously fake, too! They're stunned when they find out that the Salvadore Dali one isn't photoshopped.

It's difficult to find ones that are indeterminately real or fake but are in actual fact fake. After removing the cartoon pictures (which are obviously fake) all the remaining pictures are real. I think that after 4-5 rounds of "real" students will just realise that they're all real.

I downloaded a similar thing from somewhere else on here that was really fun.

Awesome. Nice selection of pictures. Hopefully I can use this for a "real or fake" game as well as a describing game. (I'm a little skeptical about that man holding the "giant" cat, though.)

I put that together last year. I'm glad it's getting some use. 8) The main problem, as you mentioned, is that it's hard to find interesting fake pictures that look real. Ideally, the pictures should be relatively indeterminable (apart from a few hilarious fakes), with around half real, half fake.

Awesome! I've been accumulating interesting pictures from 9gag for the past few months to make my own sort of strange pics ppt. My favorites are the head swaps!

Great idea. I'm going to try this one out.

I took your idea of the WTF photos and made my own game that follows the same basic principles. At the end of about 5 photos ask teams to choose a mystery prize or bonus (and minus) points. Then keep playing.
It keeps the game interesting.
So you want to be real artists. It's okay. I can sell that angle. But you two have to go all the way. One of you has to lose an ear!

Christina, do they have to write a sentence for each picture or do you have them write sentences for every 3 slides or something like that?

Potato, could you elaborate on these games? They just look like funny photos.
How do you play it?

Sorry, I forgot that those versions don't have the rules! My students have played it so often that I don't have to review the instructions anymore (their choice, I swear.)

1. Split the kids into small groups (3 people is best, if yuo cna game it so there's one very strong speaker per group, it works well).

2. Give each group a mini-whiteboard, eraser, and marker.

3. One student turns their back to the TV/projector. He or she is the one who should have the writing tools.

4. Show the picture and hit the timer. I usually give my kids 2 minutes.

5. Using only English and poses/gestures, the students who can see the TV describe the picture to the student drawing. If you have older or very advanced students, you could tell them not to use gestures.

6. After two minutes, everyone holds up their pictures. The winner should be the one that looks MOST like the original picture, not the one that looks the nicest. You have to kind of look at all the details. If your kids are non-competitive, like mine, you can also have them vote on the best, but my coteacher and I usually just pick one and give one point for one teacher's vote and two points if we both like it.
