~ Phrasal Verbs ~
«

Phrasal Verbs are very common and important compounds of the English language.
This topic is hardly covered here on Waygook, yet Korean students tend to struggle with them a great deal.
Hopefully you'll find something you can use attached.
Please post any more activities/ideas that you make/think of as I'd love to use them.
This is a difficult topic to make interesting/fun...
All necessary information can be found in the lesson plan.
Let me know what you think!
Thanks

I'm definitely using this tomorrow. Perfect for the direction my extra classes have been taking. Lovely work - making the theory fun.

I used phrasal verbs for a couple of my higher level night classes last year. The kids know most of them, but giving them examples of usage is very useful for them, as they are so important in daily conversation.
I was doing a topic on 'relationships' and made 2 worksheets. we also used some flash cards for role plays to practice the verbs, but i can't find them now.

Another useful way to make phrasal verbs interesting is to highlight them in the video lesson 'Words' by Radiolab (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0HfwkArpvU
).
Most of the words highlighted in the video are just simple nouns or verbs, but there are a good handful of useful phrasal verbs (break down, break up, blow out etc.) some of which overlap the other stuff posted here.

Thx for that. Definitely one of the harder lessons to get across to students.
Much better organized than my white board scribblings :D

Grammar porn indeed, jejeje.
For some reason, the science behind our language was completely omitted from my education.
Studying how to teach it is actually teaching me...

Here is a worksheet that should help the students while watching the PPT: What is a Phrasal Verb?
It's a simple fill in the blanks worksheet but should reinforce some of the more difficult grammatical aspects of phrasal verbs.
I am going to hand out one sheet between 3.
P.s: this lesson has gone down really well for me so far...

I used a Road Runner cartoon to illustrate these. I spent a class (lowish level middle school) teaching my list of phrasal verbs and then showed them "To Beep or Not to Beep." It's short, funny, and doesn't have any dialog to get in the way of the actions. I worked with the students to make some sentences. There are a ton of actions packed into those 6 minutes.
"He is
looking up
a recipe." "The Road Runner is
running away
from him."
Really, any excuse to watch Looney Tunes = good lesson as far as I'm concerned.

Good idea using roadrunner to illustrate other phrasal verbs.
Did the students enjoy the cartoons as much as you?

I think supplimenting a phrasal verb lesson plan with "action" photographs is a good idea. It allows the students to identify how an action is being performed.

Here's a dumbed down version of this lesson that I made. There are a lot more pictures. I used it in conjunction with the worksheets and the activity.ppt. For some of the worksheets i filled in a few answers myself before photocopying.

Here are templates of a phrasal verb dice game. One die has the "verb" part and the other die has the "preposition" part. I've also included a glossary that has simple definitions and example sentences of all the combinations for reference. There are lots of ways to use it. I based it on the idea from Dave's ESL cafe found here.
