@BB123 Thanks for your introductions game.
On first try it was a bit of a disaster but on the second try I started rewarding the kids with candy if they volunteered, and they loved it!
Lots of laughs too when silly combinations came up.
I had them introduce Mom, Dad, brother sister etc.... but the girlfriend/boyfriend ones were by far the funniest :)
Cheers!

Midterm Exam questions for grade 1,2,3 chapters 1-3

For those of you who have to submit questions for examinations, here are my questions from last year.
These questions are based from material found in the texts, except for the Alphabet question which is something extra I taught in class.  The question difficulty levels are easy to medium.  Don't ask the alphabet question unless you teach it in class, most students are clueless about it.

A game to review giving advice using "You should..."

I have 24 students so I split them into 4 teams of 6 students in each.

You need to give each team a pen. Divide your board so that each team has a space to write on. So on my boards I write Team 1 and Team 2 on the left board and Team 3 and Team 4 on the right board. I then write "You should..." under each team's heading.

Show the PPT which has the problem on it. The teams have to race each other to write out in full some advice, completing "You should..."

To make sure each student is paying attention number each student within the team from 1-6. (Four teams of 6 students, each student is given a personal number from 1-6).

So show the problem. Then shout "The 4's!" and all the number 4's from each team have to race to the board to write out the answer to win. Then a different problem and a different student number. Keep score to know which team has won.

If you have time, do the 'acting' part. Get one member of the team to stand with their back to the PPT so they can't see what the problem is (I've changed the order) and the rest of the team have to act it out for him/her to guess. Some will be easy to act - "I've broken my leg" some much harder - "My Dad nags me too much".

Point if they guess, extra point if they then give suitable advice for the problem. We didn't have time for the acting part today so I don't know how well it'll go down but hopefully it should be pretty funny and you've pre-taught the problems in the first activity so they should get it.

@whiskey fairy - Glad you liked it. I too had to coax my students out of their chairs with the promise of stamps. My kids found the ages part the most hilarious.

I'm Unique Because My Hearing is Bad. Giving advice.

I ususally wrote the target phrases on the board as we were doing the activity so that no one could say that they didn't know how to give advice. This lesson was fun. Thank to everyone for the great ideas about videos of unique people, sorry, I can't remember whose powerpoint I found them in.

One class flawed me by choosing Macho Man by The Village People and Sex Bomb by Tom Jones as the songs for the practice.

Here is a lesson for the 1st graders on chapter 3.  This lesson teaches present continuous tense and so far it has gone over very well, even in my lower level classes and it involves every student.  You will need 4 about whiteboards for the students to write sentences on but you can either ask your co-teachers for some or laminate some white paper.  I actually just bought 4 at Daiso for 2,000 won a piece, pretty worth it.

I forgot to include an explanation of the slap game cards.  Just make a few copies of the slap card document and cut them into cards.  Get the students into groups of 4 or so and make them lay all the cards out between them.  Call out a verb and the first student to grab it keeps the card.  The student with the most cards at the end wins.  If their is a tie have them settle it with rock, paper scissors.  This will help them memorize some verbs for the writing game.

I apologize for my lack of posts lately.  I tried posting a ton of stuff from past lessons but it failed and I got really frustrated and decided not to post anything.  I'll try to post more often and post my older stuff even if it is a little late.

Middle School Grade 1 Lesson 3-Sports Day.

I did this two weeks before midterms so the students weren't really in pay attention in class mode.  We just watched a lot of different videos of different sports.  They really enjoyed gymnastics, figure skating (Kim Yu-Na), and then we spent a lot of time watching the x-games.  My girls loved the x-games, however were a little confused on why people would want to do something like this.  It was a good converstation starter for the class!

Midldle School Grade 1 Lesson 3-Sports Day

-Started out with having the girls name all the different sports that they could think of.
-From that list we then went through all the sports and decided if they were a team sport, individual sport, or could be both.
-Went through vocab terms of win/lose/tie to make sure they understood what each one was, then had the girls translate into Korean for the other girls that may not have understood.
-Showed different sports clips (football, basketball, baseball, gymnastics, swimming, figure skating, hockey etc.)  I tried to pick clips that were my favorite teams or teams from my state because it got them a little more intersted.  For figure skating I found a clip of Kim Yu-Na, which all the girls loved!
-I did have one co-teacher that wanted me to show more extreme sports so we watched clips from the X-Games, which all the girls seemed to really enjoy.  The girls started more discussion on the extreme sports
-Also had the girls say which sports were their favorite to watch and play and say why.

Grade 1 chapter 3.

Focused on commands. An alternative version of Simon Says. This was week 2 of the chapter. Reviewed how to put simple commands together. Showed that awesome video someone posted with the Mom singing commands with Korean and English subtitles. Then went through the listening sections of the book. Then played this action game the last part of class. They had to do what I said and NOT what I did. I'm sure you guys can come up with some better action moves though! Was really tricky to do at first hahaha. I let some of the more out going students lead the class after awhile. Worked out great.

Really good warm up

This is what I've been doing for day 2 of lesson 3 for the first graders. GIVING SUGGESTIONS/INVITATIONS/COMMANDS ETC. We've been playing a dice game which could easily be reformatted for any other target vocabulary. Basically each group gets a piece of paper to keep scores and another to write down the sentences. I give them an original sentence like, LET'S GO TO THE MOVIES, then they have to change it depending on what they roll.

1= change 1 word of the sentence. get 1 point. LET'S GO TO THE park.
2= change 2 words of the sentence. get 2 points. LET'S GO TO a museum.
3= change 3 words of the sentence. get 3 points. LET'S GO eat some food.
4= lose all your points!
5= steal somebody else's points!
6= write a brand new sentence using 6 new words. get 6 points. WHY DON'T WE PLAY SOCCER TOGETHER?

Been playing a solid 25 minutes, but could easily play all class period maybe modifying rules as time passes. Played by middle school boys at a middle/high level and they got really into it.

So attached is the sentence sheet, score sheet, and power point I used for this lesson.

Really good game. I adapted it slightly for lower level classes.

Grade 3, Unit 4 - Become a better problem solver.

Start with PPT 1. Discussion about optical illusions. Show David Blaine's magic trick .  Ask the students to solve the problem of how he does the trick. Then show the magic trick revealed . Go through the PPT on optical illusions to teach the key phrases.

Next is the problem solver activity, PPT 2. I didn't make the 'International Moving Day' PPT and I can't find who did but a massive thank you to that person because it's really good. I gave sweets to the first 4 students to solve the problem.

After the Ready? Action! listening exercises finish the lesson with PPT 3.  Call students names/ numbers at random to answer the questions to review/practice the key phrases. The baby with the thumb up means they have to respond as if they do understand, ("Now I see"), the baby with the thumb down means they don't understand ("I don't get it") and the stopwatch means they need more time ("can you give me a minute").

I did this last year with my classes and it went down very well. My PPT skills are rubbish so you can probably make it more exciting.

On a slightly different note. In the textbook the phrase "Now I got it" sounds like bad English to me. I teach "Now I've got it" because I think that sounds better.

Yay. Thank you for this. I wasn't sure if I'd be able to find lesson plans for my textbook because it just says 'Middle Schooll English 1, 2 or 3 on it. Look forward to seeing the lesson plans because I've been looking at the 'Talking Break' which I've been told to and I have no idea how to do lessons based on some of the random phrases lol  :)

I was wondering what you guys will be doing for the speaking test. Last year, I just made a list of questions covering the lessons taught. This time, I want to do something a little bit more creative. Any ideas?

My speaking test will cover chapters 1-4 for grades 1 and 3.

For grade 3, unit 5: Expressing regret. I plan to show some of these adverts. They're for a British opticians called Specsavers and they all end in the phrase "Should've gone to Specsavers" as something funny/bad happens to the character due to bad eye sight. I'm sure the kids will think they're funny.

There's quite a lengthy kissing scene in one and in another a man thinks he's in a sauna when he's actually in a steamy kitchen, you might want to double check for suitability first.
