This is a thread for any lesson material for J.L. Haas (2009 edition) Middle School English 1 Lesson 3: My Family Weekend.  Please share your contributions here. Here is a Power Point. This should be good for Two Lessons. The first part is more 'oral'. with a group activity. You will need to use the results of the Group Activity for the '1st part' of the second lesson.
Second Lesson is a "survey says" game. I suggest using the results of the class survey (from the first lesson) so that the students get a good 'introduction' of the game.

Also, you can add more slides or change the answers to the surveys as you see fit. the surveys (second survey to the end) are completely made up, no 'factual basis' what-so-ever.

Posting my materials as I make 'em! I teach four periods per lesson, so there might be some stuff that doesn't directly correspond to the book.

Lesson 3A teaches "What's your hobby? / I like _________." First, I play a game called Rows and Columns. (Explanations in the lesson plan.) Afterward, I go over Listen and Talk 1 in the textbook, then pass out the worksheets. Last is a speed quiz game. You can use the PPT in lots of different ways. My students sit in rows of 5-6; I timed them to see which row could name the vocabulary the fastest using complete sentences (I like ________). Each student would name one hobby.

However, I think there's lots of other ways to do this. I might play "traditional" speed quiz with some of my other classes.

Lesson plan, worksheet and speed quiz game attached.

Lesson 3B teaches the dialogue "What do you do on the weekends? / I like playing badminton with my family." I didn't get to the speed quiz game that I intended to do for Lesson 3A; I therefore played it as a warm-up during this lesson.

Lesson 3C teaches the "Can you swim? / Yes, I can" material. I played human bingo with the students, then played a disappearing dialogue bomb game.

Human bingo instructions: Pass out bingo worksheet to teach student. There should be 16 empty spaces. Students must ask classmates "Can you _______?" and find others who CAN do the various activities. I gave stickers to the first five students to fill out their worksheets.

Bomb game instructions: Standard bomb game rules. There are 18 questions; each question is attached to two slides. The first slide shows a dialogue in full. Allow students to look at the dialogue; they have 10 seconds to memorize it. The next slide shows the same dialogue, but with words blanked out. The students had to fill in the blanks verbally.

I broke the class into three teams, and had them read dialogues in pairs. I'm also very lenient with the bomb games, and I encourage higher level students to help out the lower level ones.

Instructions for the human bingo and the bomb game are in my PPT. (There are pictures of me in the PPT, though, that you might want to change.)

My first day I watched a few lessons and had my first class which was a Grade 2 class or something like that. I thought every things was great until a kid ddong-chimmed me.

I've clobbered together a pretty good presentation. As with all my powerpoints, the powerpoint really does everything for you. It teaches the key expression: 'what is your hobby?' and 'what are your hobbies?'. Elicit as much as you can from your students.

Also be sure to stress that:
you are playing the instrument.
you are playing football.

articles, articles, articles.

I stole a 'guess what this hobby is as I slowly remove the panels' game from someone on this site and added a few slides of my own.


There is also a worksheet mingling activity where ther students get up and interview each other. Since my first graders are shy, I make sure the boys have at least 3 girls on their list, and vica versa.


Finally, I think I'll steal the speed quiz from Rachel and use that as a finisher. Thanks Rachel. Any feedback/questions let me hear it :-)

What i recommend is talking to your English Co Teachers and find out (if you have more than one) when the exams are, and know what lesson the students need to have completed by that time. It does not work well to have two teachers teaching from two different lessons. I have found students get very confused. So, you may have to make a 'lesson' (such as Lesson 1) last 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks, even 4 weeks. to make sure 1) the students understand it. and 2) they finish the lessons by the Exam time.

If you did Haas' book last year for Grade One, take a look back on Lessons 3 and 5.  Lesson 3 has the 'I like' dialogue and lesson 5 has the can/can't stuff.  You can re-use some of that stuff instead of creating everything new again if you are pressed for time.

I know I'm re-using my can/can't lesson because my students really enjoyed it last year.

I made a really simple 3-level listening/gap fill exercise for this lesson with comprehension check questions at the end. I usually read it three times (slowly), give the students a chance to fill in the blanks and answer the CC questions, and then have the students take turns reading it out loud. Feel free to change the names or whatever you see fit. Cheers!

So I have to stretch this over 4 lessons, and I've sorted out three, but I finally came up with something for a fourth.  I'm going to use this the lesson after I introduce the hobby theme. 

I have a small class so I'm going to do this individual but it could easily be done with pairs as well.

Bring in random objects (toothpicks, one choptstick, a tea candle, a pillow, post it notes, etc.) and each student (pair, group...) gets one of the objects.  They have to create a hobby - something to do to entertain themselves, using only that object and themselves.  They have to name their hobby, explain how to do it (in words, not just demonstrating) and tell us why we should like it or want to try it.

I do a similar lesson with my grade twos during the sports chapter, but I give them way more items and then I let other grades vote on which sport they created was better and give the winning team 'English Bucks' for our reward program.

A simple survey for hobbies. A little cleaner and more organized than some others. Basically the same as in the book, but in a handout form.

This is an enrichment activity if you're like me and have to teach 5-6 periods on a single lesson. I showed them a segment from the musical Annie Get Your Gun, then had students fill out lyrics based on the song "Anything You Can Do (I Can Do Better)."

There's a PPT briefly introducing the musical; then I showed them this video I found on youtube. (Skip the first 2 minutes or so.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yo2sYbirDTc

Afterward, go through some of the more difficult vocabulary (also in the PPT). Then I passed out the worksheet and had them fill in the lyrics using the Karaoke version of the song.

I played the song 3-4 times, then went over the answers. Took up nearly the whole class period for my kids -- I spent the last 10 minutes or so reviewing the various dialogue structures we'd learned in the chapter.

I like this ppt  lot, thanks for sharing it!  One bit of feedback I have about it, however, is concerning how you changed the target language on the ppt slides from "I like playing football" to "My hobby is playing football."  I think this could confuse the kids a bit.  Also, I don't know if we often say, "my hobby is...".  I think English speakers are more likely to simply say reply to "what's your hobby?" with "I like playing football."

Still, good stuff here!  Thanks bunches :)

I agree, and I removed the 'my hobby is/my hobbies are . . . ' answer from my presentation too. 'I like' does the job, and is simpler.

Question - how do you extract the mp3 files for the voice clips from the CDs? I know you recorded these ones but I remember some of your previous presentations had stuff from the CD. Cheers!

Hey Matt, I've never used the CDs and so have never extracted the MP3 files from them, sorry! I make all my own listening texts as I don't even have the CDs here.
