This is a thread for any lesson material for Judy Yin (전재교육 2013 edition) Middle School English 1 Lesson 9: A Portrait of an Artist. Please share your contributions here. I noticed that not many people post for this text book, but I think it's new this year. So I always have to make original lesson and PPT's for this book. I figured since I'd gotten so much great material from this site it's time to give back. The lesson is simple but works well. There is also a link to a Youtube video where people are talking about physical descriptions. I usually write down the questions on the board and have the kids write the answers down on a sheet of paper as they hear them. Right now there is a picture of me in there so you should substitute it for your own self portrait.  It's simple but works well!

This is a complete lesson for Chapter 9 Part I.  It covers Listen & Speak 1, Part A and B.

The PPT is based off an excellent video series I found on YouTube.  Links to the videos are on the title slide in the PPT.

This part of the chapter has no real key expression, but covers descriptive words for appearances.  Go over the new vocabulary and do Listen & Speak 1.  The dialog from the CD is particularly comical and the voice-acting is pretty poor quality.  But this is the part of the textbook that I'm responsible for, so lucky me!

There are two main activities in this lesson.  I've used the first one before with a similar lesson for MS Grade 3 last semester.  It's been modified to fit a Grade 1 level.  There are 5 different handouts with a brief description of a famous person or character.  The students must read the description and draw a picture of the person as described.  They must then guess who their "mystery person" is.  Go through the answers using the PPT.  I displayed the best drawings for each description in my previous classes - I've found you get better results if the students know their work will be graded to some degree.

The second activity is a board game based off of the classic game Guess Who?  I modified this slightly from a post by toniyellow at http://www.waygook.org/index.php?topic=3857.0

Some PPT slides have notes; more information available there and in the Lesson Plan.  As always, make sure to save the audio files in the same directory as the PPT and everything should work fine.

This is a pretty straight forward lesson. Starts out with Ss describing three characters using the words they know.  Afterwards, they word in groups to create a list of descriptive words broken down into 3 categories (hair, face, body).  For lower level classes, Ss can refer to the list of the slide.  For more advanced classes, have them look at the collection of various famous people. 

Next, I incorporated a listening comprehension exercise that I took from joannacastle.

Then, I introduce the Guess Who game (courtesy of another waygook user) and have the Ss work with descriptions.  I usually play 1 round as a class, then have the Ss pick their own characters; write their choice in their notebook; and, play with their neighbors.

Here is a complete lesson for Chapter 9, Part II.  It covers Listen & Speak 2, "What do you think of ...?"

Start the lesson with a quick warm-up from the Textbook, reviewing descriptions from that previous lesson.  Introduce "What do you think of ...?" and do L&S 2 Part A & B.

For the main activity, you'll need to use some of those English books your school probably has but never uses.  Find some simple English books with a decent amount of pictures and pass out one book per group (I do pairs and threes, but change it up depending on class size).  Give the class about 10 minutes to look through the book, and write three sentences on the handout.  They also write their own dialogue, following the one in the Textbook, which they can read aloud for the class.

Continue the "What do you think of ...?" by showing a selection of different music styles and getting their opinions of them.  If there's time, I've included a Reverse Guess Who game, based on the Guess Who I uploaded in the previous lesson.

Links to videos are provided in the PPT slides.  Also, some slides have notes; more information available there and in the lesson plan.

As always, save the audio files to the same directory as the PPT and everything should work fine.

Here's a lesson Review Game - thanks to the op for the template.

(Just save all the sound files into the same folder as the game and they should work. At my second school there's no sound working in the English room - but the game was fun anyway.)

Built this off the lesson I did last year for a different book, but it's all the same.
We went over appearance vocabulary, which requires a TON of eliciting from the students, but it's mostly stuff they know so if you keep it moving fast it's not too painful for them.

Then I had each student draw a picture of any person they wanted and write 5 descriptive sentences about it. They got exactly ten minutes to do that, then I asked for 5 volunteers to share.

Finally I gave each table a white board and played a little team guessing game. For the "difficult" slides I pointed out that they can only choose ONE person. They figured out pretty quickly that it's basically a random chance slide to make sure that the score isn't the same for every team and that there's actually a winner.

I went over the target language "What do you think of it?" with my kids, had them come up with a bunch of adjectives that they could use (in the ppt it says I had them do it as a contest, but I didn't. I just had them come up with words to describe the pictures as a class and we made a huge list on the board), and then they did an interview worksheet.
Finally because it's getting to the end of the year and we've only done one bomb game so far this semester, we played a "What Does the Fox Say" themed bomb game. I hate the song with a passion, but the template is really cool (thanks so much to the user Zeegs for making it.)

For the must/ must not grammar concept, my co-teacher and I thought it would be interesting to have the students make their own countries. We reviewed the grammar first and had them list obligations they have in real life, then turned them loose. They had to come up with six laws for their country and then make a flag for it.

Somehow we are still on Unit 9 (most chapters we spend two weeks on, this is now week four...) so I did a class focusing on using infinitives after certain verbs.

There's grammar intro, a worksheet to go along with the Pixar short "Lifted," and a white board sentence writing game.

Here's another quick drill going through the Listen and Speak Part II.  Very fast, focusing on the F sounds like on the cd at first and then going through the other stuff.  Simple.  Easy.  Fast.

Pretty easy stuff here, doing the rinse and repeat of the Listen and Speak, but in Minesweeper form.  Things like:

What do you think of...
etc.

This is just a simple drawing game that my usually unenthusiastic students really got into. One student sits with their back to the board while the other student describes the person in the picture and the student with their back to the board has to draw the person. They get a minute to draw and then for every sentence they say about what they drew they get a point and the best picture or the one closest to the actual picture gets two bonus points. The pictures are mainly of kpop idols.

This lesson is on describing appearances for Listen and speak 1. For the worksheet I had students draw each characteristic which they enjoyed. A lot of the slides were taken from a powerpoint created by another user. Thank you! I ended with a game of hot seat, where students sit with their back to the picture and the class has to describe that person in order for them to guess.

This is for Listen and speak 2 - opinions. I tried to focus on using a variety of adjectives when expressing their opinions. Worksheet and line activity is included also.
