Anyone have any good ideas for third grade lesson 5 (The Father of Video Art)? in particular anything interesting to teach about in the "warm up" section?  im not feeling inspired by art   :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(
Yeah, I'm not bursting with inspiration for this one either.  I'm not sure how much freedom you get with your lessons but I'm going to use the 'Read & Do' section from the textbook for one of the lessons for a listening and speaking activity.

After reading through the text together and explaining unknown vocab, each student gets one sentence from the text on a slip of paper.  The paper says "When you hear: XXXX"  You say: XXXX".  So the idea is that everyone stands up and listens for the sentence before theirs and when they hear it they carry on the story by reading their sentence.  When they have read their sentence they sit down.  (I usually write 'You start' on the paper with the opening sentence).

I usually play this once as a practice, then when they understand I get them to do it again as a time trial- the clock stops when everyone is sitting. Then we play once more to see if they can beat that time.

I've done this a few times before and although it can take a while to explain it, they get right in to it with the time trial... especially when they want to beat another class.

If there aren't enough sentences in the text I break up the long ones in two, or if there are extras then I read them.  I'll upload the document when I finish it.

Hope this helps someone.

I made this Powerpoint for Middle School Grade 3 - Lesson 5 - The Father of Video Art.

You may have to add some pictures for Thomas Edison and Eastman.

Here's the order in which I plan to show my videos:

1) First Mercedes Benz

2) History of Video Games

3) How to Play Beach Volleyball

I adapted some material I found elsewhere on the site for grade 2 lesson 5...how to do something. It's a lesson on surviving a zombie outbreak...much more interesting for my boys than how to bake a cake hah...Feel free to use it as you wish.

If the videos aren't in the power point, just go to youtube and search for Zombieland rules. I just used a few of the less violent clips for the rules, such as rule #1, cardio. They should be easy to find.

here is a speaking activity for grade 1 lesson 5. it's based on an earlier activity by jamierlyon to get the class on their feet and running about whilst speaking some english. a recap of the rules:

1. Stick up the 6 character sheets in opposite corners of the class (put a blank cover page over each to stop the students from cheating).
2. Form groups of 6 in anyway you want (i also used groups of 4 and it works fine, 2 kids will just have to run twice).
3. For each turn, one of the group members runs to a character sheet, reads and memorizes the information, runs back to the group and dictates the answer to another student, the writer. once this is done, the writer passes the paper on to the next person to write and a new runner heads for a different character sheet.

The content is taken from the warm up (each character wants a specific birthday present - e.g. "Chris wants a new TV.") and L&S2 (what is each person doing? e.g. "Jenny is studying").

I've added 2 versions, one slightly harder than the other for my beg and adv students. The beginners version has the target sentences written out on the character sheets so the students only have to memorize. Each sentence on the answer sheet is also started for them). The slightly more difficult version has only pictures so that the students have to form their own sentences.

hope it's useful :)

Grade 2 Chapter 4:  Advertisements, Page 54 Dialogue, and Prepositions

I am in charge of the "Practice with your friends" part of the textbook (usually Listen & Speak) portions.

So, here is a powerpoint dealing with the dialogue on page 54. And then we talk about Advertisements (The last dialogue line is: "Why don't we look at other ads?"  :D)  It goes over Logos, Slogans, and Location (Prepositions).
-- I modified someone's worksheet dealing with prepositions (thank you!).  My kids know I love Big Bang--so instead of searching for Nature's Republic we are looking for G Dragon.
--And thanks to the guy who put up the "Logo Game"  (My students really liked this part)

Then we play a Mario Game.

I have grouped my kids in teams so every time someone answers a question (any of the practice sections) that team gets a point.  So by the time we go into the Mario game, most teams have 3 - 5 points.  WIth "Ku-pa" In the mix, though, it really is luck of the draw for which team can win.  The kids get a stick if they win.

Grade 2 Lesson 5 Listen and Speak 1.
Telephone Conversation

Each team of 2 get a strip of paper for role play. They write out the dialogue and then try to memorize it and then present it in front of the class.

Jproux and JamieRLyon, the running dictation looks like an outstanding activity!  I can't wait to try it!  To tell the truth, I was at a bit of a loss with this unit, and I had previously done a creative role-play contest and didn't want to repeat it with lesson 5.  Nice work on the worksheets!

After lunch EDIT: For Grade 1, unit 5, definitely try out the activity posted by the above Waygook!  It worked wonders in my class and is a really low-prep activity!  Thanks guys!

Here is one of my lessons for Grade 2, Unit 4, Think and Write.
Do the text book stuff (well, I am required to, I suppose you don't have to) and the PPT goes along with that just to recap the comparative form and some prepositions (nothing fancy, really simple). Then I rocked this worksheet with all these ads from YouTube (to be found in the attached Word Document as there are too many of them to post them all here). It worked well with the higher level kids, but if you have enough time, you can make a plan with the lower level kids too.

Gr. 1 lesson 5 FAMILY.

I did this lesson today about family.

they have to fill out the worksheet, it's pretty easy.

The video i showed them is Full House, season 3, Episode 20, the one where stephanie drives the car through the kitchen. THey thought it was pretty funny and I have really rowdy classes, but this class went well.

I'm sorry I can't upload the video, cause it's too big. Ya gotta torrent it.

This Advertising Advertisements lesson is based on the Daniel Ryan Keller yellow Middle School English 2 book (Lesson 4 Advertisements and Our Life)

I modified a Powerpoint uploaded by Catfish for my Advertisements Lesson.

First, I had my students listen to a Heinz Ketchup jingle (sound only). I had them guess the product being advertised. Then I showed them the video.

Next, I had my students listen to a McDonalds jingle/song (same procedure as above).

Then I used a Powerpoint to teach the rest of the lesson.

If you have time, you can show Youtube videos of funny commercials.

This lesson could be expanded into a separate 40-45 minute lesson on Advertising Jingles/Songs.

You could have your students make their own advertising jingles.

You could also do a full lesson on Funny Advertisements and have your students make their own funny commercial (video)

Advertising Advertisement Lesson Ideas from High School

Sometimes I feel like we are trying to re-invent the wheel. I stumbled on Advertisement lesson ideas geared toward high school students.

It would be nice if all of the middle school AND high school lesson plans/lesson plan ideas were organized TOGETHER by topic/subject/theme instead of being organized by textbook/publisher

Grade 1 Lesson 2: Do you have healthy habits?

My classes are particulary roudy. They can never sit through a lesson. So I tried an activity that involved a lot of movements and physical activity.

In my lesson, I started by teaching them the target language.

Then i taught activities(healthy and unhealthy. I.e. exercise, drink soda, play computer game, etc.)

Then the activity...Classes get into groups of 5. and we played "pass the action". 5 students line up facing away from the student in front of them. Basically it's 'chinese whisper' but with actions. the last person needs to guess the answer...different ways to win, you can choose.

if you finish all 3 correctly in the allocated time, your team receives a point.
the team who answers the most correctly wins a point.
if you answer in English, 2 points. if you answer in Korean, 1 point.

@gyopo: good idea

here is a possible link for phone conversation lessons from another topic. this could be useful for Gr 2 Ch 5.

http://waygook.org/index.php/topic,2412.0.html

i have another suggestion for people posting on this topic. Let's try to put our materials up as far in advance as possible so that we can maximize the use everybody can get from it now. Not much use for me now getting a lesson plan on chapter 2 - although obviously it's still great for next year's teacher.

For Grade 1, Lesson 5,  Let's Communicate, Page 71

I used the AWESOME running dictation activity from another Waygook poster as the supplementary component at the end. I did this lesson as my Open Class last week. I did completely different activities, however, and no text book. The only thing remaining from that lesson in this PPT is the sentence construction component. They were the advanced class. This is for the intermediate students. Beware: You need to have chocopies (or something similar) on hand and some small candies (or change the PPT not to include that info, I suppose, but it REALLY worked this way). The instructions for the sentence construction, text book, running dictation and photos are in the PPT. I hope it's useful.

The textbooks I've encountered since teaching in Korea are horrendous. Grammatically incorrect, poorly presented, amateurish to the extreme. Isn't there any standards body that vets the curriculum?
