The textbooks I've encountered since teaching in Korea are horrendous. Grammatically incorrect, poorly presented, amateurish to the extreme. Isn't there any standards body that vets the curriculum?

they are not great, but not that bad. You could also have NO books at all, and everything you do would be from scratch, so I'm thankful we at least have something.

For 1st grade, Les. 5, Listen & Speak 2, the main grammar point is present continuous/progressive ("be" and "verb"+ing).  I had my students do an action race game.  6 people in one group, each group gets 2 slips of paper and they have to write down actions with -ing, like "dancing", "eating", or "swimming".  After, I give every student in the group a number: Go to one group, say 'this student is number 1, next student is number 2, and so on'

After, I tell them, first two students to do the action wins a point for the team.  They line up in front of class, from A on the left to F on the right.  I say '3-2-1 Action!  Swimming!'  and give points to the fastest 2 people.

It's a bit of a boring lesson, so I did this activity to get the students out of their seats and move around a bit.
You get what you give :)

Gr 1, Lesson 5, Listen and Speak 2.

Present continuous, -ing.

After the listen and speak, tell them they will look at pictures and make sentences (pictures in the powerpoint), I made them work in groups of 2.

After, I did a bingo game (based on someone's awesome food bingo game) and gave candy to the 1st two teams that yelled BINGO

That takes about 40-45 minutes for the entire lesson.

For Grade 1, Lesson 5 (A Special Day for Semin's Family - Georgeanna Hall green book), I added to sophia's Powerpoint. It now has 22 slides. This Powerpoint can be used for a general review of Lesson 5

Lesson 5: Let's communicate!

I did the game first, which took about 10 minutes, then I had the last 15-20 minutes for them to write out the dialogue (as instructed in the book) with a partner.

Grade 1 lesson 5
For grade 1 lesson 5 created this power point and the kids had a lot of fun.

First I reviewed last weeks lesson,  Then I introduced this weeks topic, verbs ending in ing.  We went through the PPT and did the fill in the blanks as a class to make sure thy understood the grammar rules.  Next the students worked in groups to write as many sentences as they could describing the photos using ing verbs.  After we went through all 6 slides the students read their sentences.  some were really funny.  One group wrote "he is showing his six pack"
After if there was time we played the alphabet game.

I hope someone finds this useful. :D

GRADE 3  LESSON 5  -  Father of Video Art

So, this is what I did this week.  I gathered/modified the power point from someone here on waygook (but can't remember who....sorry).

First we did Listen and Speak 2 (page 80).

Second we went through the powerpoint (which they loved!)

Third I had one student come to the front of the room to be the "artist" who can't look at the tv.  This student has to draw whatever we tell him/her to draw.  (Usually it was Rain or Harry Potter from the PPT).

Then it was their turn to be "artists".  One person from each table got a secret picture.
I made the picture cards and printed them.  Folded them over so the speaker could hide them to keep them a secret.  I walked around with one set and my coteacher had one set so we could change up pictures when students were ready for a new one.  The other people at the table had to draw whatever the picture holder told them to draw.  When they finished they compared their pictures and got a new one.

Most students were so into the activity they drew 4-5 pictures.  It was a hit with 13 out of 14 classes.  (I can't seem to find ANYTHING that last class is interested in doing.).

Let's Communicate

(GRADE 3  LESSON 5  -  Father of Video Art - middle school 3 pink Daniel Ryan Keller book)

One of my co-teachers has me do the Let's Communicate sections (which are really boring and sometimes too complicated for my students) as well as the Listen & Speak sections.

It seems that many of you are not teaching the Middle School Grade 3 students. Most of the Chunjae - Lee Jae Young lesson plans/teaching materials that are on Waygook are for Grade 1 or Grade 2.

For grade 2 lesson 4 - advertisements I did a lesson on slogans. I know everyone is probably passed this by now but they loved it so much I'm going to do this again in my summer camp!

Warm up - I played some really obscure ads from the UK/USA for the kids to watch and had them guess what they were trying to sell

Then I went onto the lesson about slogans, and did the same thing as above but just using sloganition s. I started with a couple of examples "just do it" and "I'm lovin it" and the kids immediately identified with these and very quickly made the connection that words are just as important if not more than tv commercials/posters etc.

Game - gave the students a list of slogans and thet had to guess the product in their teams, points awarded for the correct answer but also the most creative answers.

To finish I got the students to come up with their own slogan. Still working in their teams I gave them a picture of sa product and we had a competition to see who could come up with the best slogan.

Some of the slogans were amazing - in the summer I can't wait to take this further and have the kids make their own advertisements!

3rd grade, ch. 3 phrases and ch. 2 vocab review (although there's a couple random words from ch. 3--director and broken, which they seemed to be able to guess anyways even though they haven't started ch. 3 in their grammar classes yet)
used it this week to help them prep for their exam (thanks to whoever posted the "favorite subject" mario game for 1st graders--i used that template for this one!)

it took anywhere from a few seconds past the bell to having 5-10 minutes extra. go figure. class of 40, had them repeat phrases after me.

do you make this mario game? if so, you are amazing and i am in awe of your powerpoint skills. it's so beautiful it almost moved me to tears. i'll be sure to use this next year.

Middle School English 2 Daniel Ryan Keller yellow book - Lesson 5 Class Party

For my 2nd week teaching Lesson 5, I modified a Powerpoint that one of my co-teachers made (I added to it so that it now has 35 slides).

For my lesson:
(1) I showed and explained the Powerpoint

(2) Then I passed out the Party Invitation forms and had my students start making party invitations (after they decided what kind of party they wanted to have)

(3) I showed the Howcast How to Throw a Slumber Party video. My kids loved the video because men were acting like girls/women

(4) For the last 10 minutes of class, I showed Mr Bean Cartoon - Happy Birthday Teddy

Middle School English 3 Daniel Ryan Keller pink book - Lesson 6 The Spinning Coin

For Lesson 6, Listen & Speak 1 C, I modified someone's Superhero Powerpoint.

I had my students guess the superhero.

Then we went around the classroom, and the students made a sentence about each student (Example - Mina is as cute as a rabbit).

For the sentence-making part, I used the Famous People portion of the Powerpoint.

For the rest of the lesson, we practiced outlining the step-by-step instructions for things (Example - making bibimbap, making a ham and cheese sandwich).

The Giving Instructions Powerpoint goes with the Instructions worksheet (I got the Instructions worksheet from someone on Waygook, but I don't remember who I got it from).

Grade 2 Lesson 5 - Class Party - Build UP A and B

I know most of you don't do the build up parts but just in case you need something to teach the grammar points (part A deals with the present perfect tense and part B deals with uncountable nouns.

For the present perfect i showed them the PPT that i made them and then played 2 truths and 1 lie with my kids.  Basically in partners they have to make 3 sentences (i focused on We/she/he) where 1 sentence is false about the pair.  Then in their groups (i got 40 kids so they are in usually groups of 4 or 5) each group should have 2 pairs that have finished so enough for 2 rounds.  First group says theres and every other group tries to guess which one is the lie.  The groups that guess correct can score points.  You can use just the simple 2 points if correct 0 points if not but i use the spinning wheel to make it more exciting and randomly choose how many points the correct team scores.  Kids seem to like the game and try to trick their peers.

For the uncountables (part b) i just had them in groups and 4 and handed out menus that i printed off google. One person in the group was the waiter and had to take the other group members orders.  Focusing on making uncountable nouns countable.  So if their was juice on the menu, the waiter would have to put 1 glass/ or 2 glasses of oj.

Im on lesson 6 now but need a lesson about practicing the 5 senses along with a verb+ing such as Tom saw (sense) the bird singing (verb+ing)  Any suggestions? or is anyone on lesson 6 yet.

Thanks for your help, hope my lesson helps.

Can ANYONE come up with something entertaining and creative for ch 6 grade 1? My coteacher is insisting on this chapter for my open demo lesson and I'm basically sh*tting my pants trying to come up with something....

Ideas, inspirations.... anything?

Honestly, I thought Grade 2, Chapter 6 was going to be a tough lesson to get through, but it actually went over pretty well with my students.

They really seemed to like the visual illusions. I showed pictures similar to the ones in the book (old-young woman, etc) and asked them questions to make sure they saw both images.

For example:
- If this is an old woman, what part of her face is this? Mouth!
- If this is an young woman, what part of her face is this? Neck!

That sort of thing.

I also showed them a video of this live performance group, Fighting Gravity. It fit with the whole "illusion" theme and my kids really seemed to enjoy the video. You can actually download the different performances off their website, which was nice because the quality is pretty good.

http://www.fightingravity.com/

I'm uploading my powerpoint. It's nothing special, but maybe it'll give a better idea of how the lesson went.

The only offering I have is my lesson for the Think and Write section. I dunno how useful the PPT for the textbook itself would be as, usually, one does not teach like that from the text book for an open class. However, I made a game for the supplementary activity at the end of the work from the text book. It is a Word Grab Game. I'm posting the PPT with the lesson from the text book which has the aforementioned game at the end. You can just copy and paste the game slides into a new presentation if you wanted to use them without the part for the text book. Also, I'm posting a Word Document with the words for the word grab game. Hope it is useful. The kids LOVED this game in my classes.

Hey, it's getting towards that time of the year so I thought I'd post a review game that I adapted - Who Wants to be a  Candy Millionnaire?

I just had each team of students answer with a/b/c/d/ cards so that everyone had an opportunity to answer every question. The questions in this PPT are Grade 3 Lessons 1-3 but you can change to suit.

GRADE 1 LESSON 6

here's a directions activity i did with my class. I printed a big A1 copy of the map and put it on the board, or you can print small A4 copies and give student his/her own map. the map is an adaptation of a map Michael Holmes made for our orientation lesson plan. Attached is also a question sheet. It fits in really well with L&S 1. As always I also have the basic chapter notes for beginners and advanced students that I drill into them to make sure they have the basics down.

GRADE 1/2 REVIEW:

I'm busy finishing my Review Jeopardy Games for Grade 1 and 2. I'll post them by the end of the week.

Added to that I'll do a script writing review game with my advanced classes. I've done it before and it works really well. In groups of four they have to string together the focus language of each lesson into one script that that they perform in front of the class. This can take almost a whole period for the groups to prepare and then another to present. 1.5 periods I'd say, or you can give them the prep work as homework. My classes use the chapter notes i give them for every chapter and that i've posted on this thread to write their script.

Grade 2 - Lesson 6 - How Does the Cat Sleep Soundly - Have you ever - Present Perfect tense game - "Liar!"

I found this game idea somewhere deep in the internet.  The instructions are a bit long, but once they understand the students enjoy it and it actually got them speaking.  Amazing.

The full instructions are in the lesson plan file below along with the handouts and printable things, but essentially it goes like this:

In groups, all students start with an even amount of play money.  They take turns to ask another student a "Have you ever" question using the handout with verbs and nouns.
When a student is asked a question they must pick up a card from a pile in the middle of the table.  If it says "Tell the truth" they must answer truthfully, if it says 'Tell a lie' then they must lie.
If the rest of the group suspect the student of lying they can say "Liar!".  If they catch them lying then the liar has to pay the accuser $5, if the accusation is wrong then the accuser pays the person who answered $5.

I've uploaded the lesson plan questions handout, money printout and Truth/Lie cards below.
