What are they wearing?
« Reply #1 on: April 18, 2013, 06:05:25 PM »
Just a collection of images i got from a website (male and female fashion). Prompt students with questions, "what is he wearing" "what is she wearing"
Attached is a vocabulary list - i just went through each one with the class and got them to write them down.
Then you can print and cutout the people and play many different types of games (e.g. celebrity heads where students are given a picture and the class has to ask that person if they are wearing a 'blue shirt' or 'orange pants' etc etc until they can guess the right one.

This is a describing people ppt with a Guess Who game at the end.

I adapted it from another thread for an earlier lesson this year, but it seems to go well with listen and speak 1.

I adapted JCongos lesson to include the listen and speak 1 and lets communicate section from the book. It's more or less the same, with a few new additions and opportunities for the students to practice.

The more you know.

And here is the second part of the lesson, for Listen and Speak 2. I noticed a similarity with the favours part of Grade 2 Lesson 3(Daniel Ryan Keller), So I simplified my PPT and worksheet from that lesson and adapted it to this lesson (My grade 2 lesson is itself an adaption from another lesson on favours from waygook.)

The lesson is based around the phrase "Can you...?" and has many examples for the students to practice. We then move onto a game, called the 'Favours Survey'. The game is explained(step by step) in the ppt and on the worksheet.

Whew, its good to be done with this textbook for now, those 2 lessons will cover me for a month as I only see my 1st graders on a bimonthly basis.

The more you know.

This is for the first part: describing people
Presentation
A bunch of pictures with with the description partially hidden. Prompt the students to give you the answers and when they get it, click the box to reveal the phrase. There's a teacher's cheat sheet at the end.

Worksheet - fill in the blanks and describe your friend

Game
This is sort of family fued style. Team one describes some aspect of the person. If their response is on the board, click the rectangle to display it and then click the rectangle next to it to display how many points they get for their guess. Each team gets one chance to guess per round. There's a teacher cheat sheet for the game at the end of the presentation.

Thanks for the ppts! I've cannibalized some to suit my class. For a game, I'll be doing the Guess Who Game that I've posted here:

http://www.waygook.org/index.php/topic,53887.0.html

Additionally, I discovered someone else (somewhere else) posted a description Mad Libs powerpoint. I made a version to go along with this lesson, and although I wrote 4 stories, we only had time to do the first one -- The Blind Date. I'll be saving the others for a rainy day, and definitely plan on doing Mad Libs again, because it went over really well.

Epistemology - thanks for this. It looks like a great game. I've just been told to use the can/can't part of the lesson for my open class next week, this will be a good intro game.

This is for part two "Can you..."
Presentation/Worksheet/Game

Presentation:
Prompt the students and when they say the correct word, click the blocks to display the dialogue.

Game:
I have the students pass around a stuffed moose to select which pair will go.  Anything would work fine though. I can't remember who I stole this game idea from. Warning: it gets LOUD. If there are other classes happening...well...

Enjoy!

Here is a complete lesson for Chapter 4.  It covers Listen & Speak 1.

The PPT is pretty straightforward - just go through it with the class, explaining descriptive words.  There are two activities, both similar to each other.  The first is Guess Who Descriptions, where the students must draw pictures following several descriptive sentences to guess who a character or person is.  The second activity is a Guess Who? style board game.  I'd recommend printing and laminating the game board and cards - I've used this game for two grades so far, and it's worth the extra prep to have it available whenever you need it.

Some slides in the PPT have comments; more information available there and in the Lesson Plan.  Be sure to download and extract the audio files into the same directory as the PPT, and the Listen & Speak slides should work fine.  They won't work without the audio files.

Good luck!

I have attached a page of descriptions - work in groups of 4, hand each group one description and a piece of paper to sketch. At the end, all groups need to present their picture in front of the class by reading their description. (total 15-20 minutes for a class of 28)

I extended the levels for some groups by asking them to also describe the other parts of the picture not mentioned in the original description, where the sketchers used their discretion (e.g. what about his eyes? He has big, brown eyes).

This worked very well with my first graders.

My kids really liked this lesson, nathangrieve! I just took the pictures and blew them up to full size slides, and had the kids describe what they see.

After going through the 20 pictures on the first worksheet (t-shirt, coat, pants, etc.), I had them do the describing people activity. It fills up a 45 minute class well, and keeps the kids engaged.

Thanks!

Here is a complete lesson, covering Listen & Speak 2.  In the attachments are a PPT presentation, Lesson Plan, Favors Game, and Description Memory.

My classes really enjoyed this lesson.  The presentation portion is short: introduce asking favors using "Can you ...?"  I do a Pass the Pencil activity which my classes really enjoy.  The Favors Game was a huge hit - instructions are in the Lesson Plan.  Descriptions Memory was also enjoyable, but requires a bit of printing and laminating ahead of time.

I've included the audio files for the Pass the Pencil and Listen & Speak sections.  Be sure to save these in the same directory as the PPT and everything should work fine.  Some of the slides in the Favors Game have personal images or references; you'll need to change those to fit your class.  As always, some slides may have comments; more information available there and in the lesson plan.

Good luck!

I modified some fantastic material another waygooker made, just making a worksheet to help the students form questions. Just uploading it all together so it makes sense how it fits in.

You can cut the clothes vocab and make some group card activities.

Thanks.

PJblake, I'd like to take this opportunity to thank you for your lessons...Its VERY VERY well structured. It's simple and efficient....My girls (all girls private school) has so much fun. Nothing is laborious and everything just flows.

I also love how you maintain consistency throughout all the presentations, Not fluffing it with various  PPT themes thus removing potential noise...hats off to you Sir.

Hope you have a good day....

Modification of other lessons, some of my own material, and a quiz based on words and expressions from the book.

If someone wants to do a similiar style modifying this material for grades two and three, I'd sure appreciate it.  It's a lot of work here.  Ha ha.

Kids sit in teams and each group uses white boards to write the answers and they compete for points for the quiz part.

My co-teacher asked me to do a lesson on Present Progressive based on the Grammar part of the text book. If anyone else needs to do this here you go!

We watch the video when you get to the blank slide. I thought it would be a fun way to introduce the sentence before they learn how to make it.

Make A Sentence Game:
Print the 4 pages of cards for each group. Sort students into groups of 4. Have the groups use the cards to make a sentence. Open the ppt and type their sentences to compare.
This worked well for my low level classes.
