Great idea! Might try this with elementary.

Can students use the same letter multiple times in each word? For example, to make "hippopotamus" from h-i-p-o-t-a-m-u-s?

Yes! Given those letters, students could also spell words like 'hip hop' 'potato' and 'pasta'. Using the same letter multiple times is how I do this activity.

This is great. I'm definitely going to try this game out with my 5th and 6th graders. How strict are you usually on spelling?

Be as strict or as lenient as you like. Make it your game.

Going to use this with my after school class to make it a fun and active way to start the class. Thanks SO much. This is just what I was looking for!

Once again - many thanks!  :cheesy:

Awesome! I'm glad that teachers are still finding this activity useful over two years later.

Word Wall has become an institution in my classes, and now my students are disappointed when we don't start with this activity!  8)

This seems like a really cool idea for a semester long competition.
I have a few questions as well:

Considering that some of your classes have 10,000+ words, how do you count them all? Doesn't that take a very long time?

What do the cards look like that you hand out to the students? Are there numbered blanks?

My last polished set of Word Wall cards had spaces for 45 words. Some students stopped when they filled their cards. Some wrote in the margins. It never took too long to calculate a class of cards (25-30ish). I wasn't too strict about pluralization or misspellings. I just skimmed over most of the cards because the students all wrote the same words. Overall, it was a great activity to do with my classes.
