Well,... at some bookstores (mostly your average Korean bookstore) you can buy the bigger answer version for this textbook as well as the activity book (answer version) that accompanies the text. It costs about 20,000 won to 24,000 won depending on the grade (1, 2, or 3). Often times students will buy them because it has all of the answers in it with explanations in Korean.

GRADE 3 LESSON 9 'Do you mind if...?'

A simple PPT, worksheet and pair work activity to introduce target vocabulary.
This lesson also highlights the need to be polite when using English helping students understand cultural necessities.
At the point in the PPT when I have included an 'England' flag with politeness and rudeness on it, I am going to call for the students to think of the differences between poilte and impolite behaviours in Korea and England/the west and give them whiteboards to share ideas.

GRADE 3 LESSON 9 'I appreciate it'

Another simple PPT making use of different ways of asking for help, saying thanks and then accepting the thanks.
At the beginning of class random students will be handed a slip of paper and asked to decide which column on the board they think it belongs in.   They should write it in corresponding column - elicit ideas and feedback if necessary.
Ss then get the opportunity to create their own dialogues using pictures on ppt to help but encourage them to be creative.
Dido's song 'thank you' will then be used for a listening activity and ss will be required to listen for the missing nouns.

Hope this is a success - but not sure yet!!

My first power point done myself!
I plan to show Spice Girl's Wannabe from my computer to ask the students what word is said the most.... WANT (or wanna....ha)
I used someone's idea (I forget who. sorry!) for the dialogue boxes.

Please comment on it and make suggestions. I have trouble with participation, so I might have to think of a few extra things to do at the end of the lesson to make the full 45 minutes.

If anyone has any ideas for extra activities for students who do not like to do pair work or speak in front of the class - let me know.

Here is my lesson plan to go along with my powerpoint. Also included a worksheet for students to practice dialogue.

Hey all,

Here is my lesson for Grade 3, Lesson 10. For this lesson I decided to make a 'have you ever heard of" music guessing game where students listen to a song and have to guess the musician. I have detailed notes in my ppt., but there are the instructions.

Rules of this game:

1) You can split the class into groups of 4 or 5 students or students can play on their own.
2) Give every group (or every student) a small blank piece of paper with the numbers 1 to 6 written on the page.
3) Students read the song name for example ‘have you ever heard of In Too Deep.”
4) The response comes up on the screen ‘Sure, isn’t it sung by blank ______? and the song plays.
5) Students write down their answers for example ‘Sure, isn’t it sung by Sum 41.’
6) Once the song is finished click once and a picture of the band will be revealed (remember if you click too early the song will stop and the answer will be revealed).
7) There are only 6 songs (feel free to add more if you want).

DO NOT PUT MY FOLDER INSIDE ANOTHER FOLDER.  IF YOU DO THIS, THE AUDIO WILL NOT WORK.

Notes:

1) Slide 10 has a link to the super cheesy video
2) Slide 12 has a link to the video
3) Slide 13 has a  link to the video
4) I have made both a ppt. 2003 and ppt. 2007 file, but I suggest using the ppt. 2007 file if possible.

Enjoy!

Angry Birds Review Lessons 7-9, Grades 1 and 2.

I downloaded an Angry Birds template here on Waygook and just filled in the questions based on the book. All the answers can be found there. They are quite easy, so it should be used for lower level students. But I think the advanced students will have fun with it too.

I am going to send a special shout out to Machoman and chris0206. The stuff you posted for Grade 3 Lesson 9 has saved me from a dreadfully boring and repetitive rehashing of last years material.  Thank you both very much!

thank you thank you....

and i'd like to thank chris0206 for uploading that game.... however, i revised it by changing the rules and changing some of the "do you minds.."  hopefully it's more interesting.  just a warning if you download the original version that chris0206 posted, there are a few slides with grammar errors, the creator wrote "I" twice in many of the slides.

it's now more of a truth or dare kind of game minus the truth part.

and also, instead of passing a pen to choose the two players, i am having the class play the 눈치 game.  if you guys don't know the 눈치 game your co teacher should know.  or, just ask me.

**** EDIT***** the previous version i uploaded didn't have the right animations set during the rule part.  i fixed it.  sorry bout that.

Machoman and chris0206 - Thank you so much for your genius grade 3, lesson 9!! You don't even know how this has saved me!  and Machoman ... that 눈치 game was a terrific hit!!
 ;D
If you know any other games like that one please share ... that just may help me survive my 3rd grade classes

Hi... here are 2 PPT's for Grade 3 Lesson 10. One is just a quiz for 'Have you heard...?'  and the other is also some explanations of the 3 dialogue pics from the book with a couple of extras and then a quiz at the end for the 'Can you tell me why...?' stuff.

They quizzes are quite short and I plan on using them at the end of the lesson to review. Or, rather, to practice the dialogue as a group.

Here is a Prezi that I prepared that I'll show to my students to get them to try to think differently about their approach to learning how to speak English and hopefully to help build their cofidence. Let me know what you think, and let me know if there is anything you think I should add. I won't use this prezi until October 10th, the week after their midterms. I think it might be helpful for your co-teachers as well if they don't speak much English at school.

Learning How to Speak English Prezi

This prezi is amazing. I wish I could use it, you must have genius children. mine would never understand that. not even the 3rd graders. ho hum, i guess I am still teaching some of them the alphabet!

I really haven't used computers for years (esp. ppt) and  It doesn't help that everything is in Korean,

I really would appreciate even the slightest bit of help!

I should've posted all my materials for the G3:L9 (Do you mind). Sorry about that!

At first, I struggled with how to introduce this lesson, but I figured out how to connect it with KPop.

1. I play three minutes of this Kpop mashup video and have students write down all the english they hear
2. I write down all those on the board and explain KPOP is going to help them understand our lesson today. I focus on the 2NE1 song "I don't care" and connect it to "I don't mind"-- with I don't care being a little rude.
3. Introduce the dialogue "Do you mind/care"? Students can easily understand the comparison, even with my low level students.
4. I used a ppt from someone else on here, but SORRY-- can't remember who, but props to creating a very handy, useful ppt for explaining and giving examples!
5. Give them a handout to practice (I made it and made a stuuuupid mistake, didn't mix up the vocab words SO MIX THEM UP before you use it. haha. I looked like a big dumbie)
6. Play the grid bomb game

Hope it makes this lesson more enjoyable.

As for Lesson 9: B "I appreciate it"... seriously cannot think of how to make this interesting. DAMN YOU, Thomas Orr!!  Anyone have ideas?? HELP, please?? And I'm really trying to use more videos to engage students, so any music videos/songs/clips/AFV vids you could throw my way? I'd greatly appreciate it. (oooh, see what I did there?)

Maybe most of you are done teaching from Lesson 9, but my school is a little behind that!
Here's my PPT for Lesson 1-9, using the dialogue about buying things, and connecting it to the idea of traveling. Hopefully someone can use it or get an idea from it!

For Lesson 10 Grade 2 - What is culture?

I found an American Culture Lesson from here - and put the lesson into it. I also found someone's Lesson 10 outline to make mine from. It is a mix from all things Waygook.  :D

Also here is my lesson plan outline. I also have shown the Animaniac's (spelling?) video of Wacko's 50 states in the beginning of class. It's too fast for kids to understand, but they are quiet when I play it and gets the lesson started.

Does anyone teach these lessons WITHOUT powerpoint?

My school's computer isn't working with some of the TV screens in my classes (I travel to different classes). I really need a back up plan if my ppt doesn't work. Had one heck of a class yesterday with power point failure. Eh.

How do you teach the speak out dialogue without flashy technology?

Grade 2 Lesson 10. This lesson has a lot of overlap with two of my Grade 3 lessons because both books use similar expressions.

I have done lessons where I have used the chalk/white board to put up the key expressions and then used an active game to get them to use the target language.
