Here is my power point and game for Lesson 2.  At the end of class I plan to do a SLAM game.  The cards and directions are found in the word file.

Bingo Cards Lesson 2: My Favorite Thing

Here are some bingo cards I made for this chapter.  I used http://www.eslactivities.com/bingo.php# to generate the cards if you want to make other bingo cards it's pretty easy.  (and cutepdf to save it as a pdf file)

There are 34 different cards as well as a Call Card.

I print four per sheet which is a good size and saves paper and laminating sheets.  You could do full page or half page if you want too though.

Here is my powerpoint for this lesson.  A lot of the content  is borrowed from other users, so credit to all of them including Jennyb.  I added a few GIFs and funny images that got a good response.  After the ppt I handed every student a piece of paper and had them write a sentence about what they do in their free time.  I then collected those and we used them as prompts for a quick game of charades about hobbies.
p.s. dismiss the file name it is from lesson 2, it's just the third class I'd done with these students.

Jennyb1910,  I've read your rules for the SLAM game over and over but I still don't quite understand how it works. 

So there are 2 lines (i.e. 2 teams).  The first person in line from each team says what they are supposed to on each card around the semi-circle.  When they meet the other team member they must rock paper scissors.  The winner gets to continue.  At this point do they go all the way to the end of the semi-circle (earning a point) and the loser goes to the back of their line?  If they don't know a word on a card are they supposed to go to the back of the line and another team member picks up where they left off?  And does the new person pick up where the previous one left off or at the beginning of the semi-circle? 

Thanks for the clarification.

Here is my take on the lesson:

1. Presentation - Modified version of Jennyb1910's ppt.

2. Textbook - I teach the listen/speak/real life scene parts. This I do entirely out of the textbook, so no additional material is included in the ppt.

3. Game - "Tell Me 5" (Family Fued). I teach at an all girl's middle school, so you may need to modify the questions to fit your students (and change the school name, etc).

However, the questions are pretty basic and there is definitely more than enough to last an entire class period. The majority of my classes have only made it through 3-4 rounds before the bell rings. You could even modify it and use the game for an entire lesson in itself, if you need to teach this chapter over 2 weeks like I do. I've included 16 rounds, which is way more than enough for a 45 minute period.

So. I spend 2 classes on each lesson with my 1st graders. Lesson 2 is pretty easy in regard to the key expressions. The first class I used Speak part A and the Mysterybox game. The mysterybox game has always been a hit, regardless of level or age of the students. Virtually the same as the game above with minor changes. The second class I used a review, Speak part B and a speaking rock paper scissors competition game. I will have to change the game design a little because speaking fast to win doesn't exactly promote the best pronunciation nor a good practice for conversational english, but my students loved it nonetheless. Game instructions. print number of game boards for half of your students. e.g. 30 students = 15 boards. Two students per board. Students start at opposite ends of the board. When I say go, i set a timer for a minute and they speak through the game spaces until they meet somewhere in the middle. At that time, they play rock paper scissors. The winner starts where the battle happened and the loser goes back to the starting point. Once a player reaches the other players 'start' they win. If rock paper scissors goes back and forth, the person furthest along after a minute wins. Pair up the winning matches until you come down a final match between students. I made them perform at the front and everyone was really into it. Also. I have two game boards. The one that elicits target language is obviously for higher level. Anyway. Enjoy.

Have students stand up in a circle/semi-circle. Have them all repeat the sentences after you. Then explain that it's one person, one word. person one says 'what'. next person says "is" etc etc. have them practice just going through the sentences fast. after that. go to the next slide and demonstrate that some words have symbols that illicit an action. These words with symbols need to be spoken at the same time the action is produced. If the student is too slow or produces the wrong action based on the symbol, then they must sit down. Game variations obviously feasible, but I do last 3 students standing win. Large classes of 30-32, this game can take up to 30 minutes. That's way too long, so make sure your directions are concise and you make students sit down at the slightest mistake. It can be really fun!

Here are my materials for lesson 2. The compound word slides at the start of each PPT are not my own, and some stuff is adapted from the posts above 

Part A – started off with the crack the code worksheet from tori_bird above. We went through the ‘I like…, because….’ part on the PPT, did the first page of the listening part in the book, then played hobbies charades. 2 students came to the front, acted out the cards, and their teams had guess the hobby using the target vocab

Part B – we continued with the ‘Do you like…?’ target vocab, and worked through the rest of the listening part and PPT.
Then the students broke into teams of 4-5, I handed out mini whiteboards. The first game is a question writing game – I show the answers to some yes-no qurstions on the PPT, and students had to write down the corresponding question. Fastest team to finish correctly got a point.
The second game is Give Me 5 – in their groups, students wrote down 5 things for a particular category, and after 3 minutes or so they wrote their team’s answers on the board. 1 point for each word that another team didn’t also write (essentially scattergories – always a winner as a time filler)

Part C – review day. Students got into a pair and did the Speak To Your Partner dialogue, then we used the mystery box game

Revisiting the slam game from a few posts earlier; I'm planning on using this next week but I'm still finding the instructions a bit vague. Does each team get their own line of cards with the same content, or are they just traveling down one line and eventually meet in the middle? Additionally, am I supposed to be calling out which cards they need to 'slam' or is it just free reign, like let them just go as fast as they can and monitor the speaking on both ends?

I really want to use this as review, so any help would be appreciated!

Okay, I'm going to try to explain it.  The only reason I understood the instructions is because I have seen something like this before. 

So you have two teams of students.  Lets pretend they are on different sides of the room facing forward.  Connecting these two teams is a row of desks.  Each desk has a slam card.  You say start and the first person from each line starts reading the cards moving towards each other.  When they meet in the middle (location depends on how fast they read) they play rock, paper, scissors.  The loser goes to the end of their teams line.  The winner starts reading the slam cards again, continuing to go towards the direct of the opposing team.  Now, when the losing student goes to the end of the line and the winning student starts reading again... The next student from the losing team starts reading.  The two students (winner and new player) will meet.  They play rock paper scissors.  Same thing happens... Loser goes to the end of the line and winner keeps reading.  The idea is that it takes a while to actually get all the way through the cards to the opposing team.... Unless you are just a boss at rock paper scissors.

I hope that helped instead of making you more confused...

Hello friends. Just thought I would add my 2cents.

I basically took two of the ppts from above and mushed them together, updating them as I went. It includes slides from Drubdrub and I think TinyRabbit. (sorry if I forgot you and I used one of your slides.)

I edited them together to make a transition ppt where we quickly review Introductions and Where/From. I updated all the material to be current for their interests and it seems to have worked fairly well. Then it goes into a brief introduction on My Favourite Things/What do you do? The kids fill in all the blanks and answer all the questions based off the picture prompts.

Finally we finish up the lesson (about 15/20 min) with a game of Tell Me 5. I divide them into groups, and they guess the 5 favourite things based off of TinyRabbit's game. I also updated it to be workable for a co-ed school and, again, current with the times.

You can reward the winning group with candy, I just don't like to spoil them. Candy is for dire circumstances (like my grade 3 boys).

NOTE: the lesson might be slightly shorter than the desired 45min, because I always open my classes with warmers that last from 5-10min. BUT there are more than enough Tell Me 5 slides to last.

Hi Guys,
Here are a few activities that I did with my class:

1: Guess my favourite thing. This is a ppt I made about some of the things I like. I divided the class into 2 teams. If they could guess the answer with no hints = 5 points, 1 hint = 3 points and 3 hints = 1 point. They really liked this and were shouting out loads of vocab.

2: Survey. First I had my high level students fill out the questions about their favourite things. Then they had to "find someone who likes ...(blue). Once they had found that person they wrote their name in the block. This took a good 10 minutes.

For my low level students I just did a standard survey.

3: Board Game: This was very simple. I divided them into pairs and gave each team a coin. Heads = 2 spaces, Tails = 1 space. They had to make a sentence using the vocab. This could easily be used with dice and larger teams.

Hello friends.

I just finished this chapter with my kids by doing a short review ppt and then playing MYSTERYBOX.
I don't know about you guys, but the version of MYSTERYBOX available here just did not jive with my laptop, so I edited it (a lot). I actually ended up getting so angry at the game and it's numerous flaws, I gave it a complete revamp. Thanks to OP for doing all the nitty gritty work. I'm sorry it's no longer quite so matrix-y in theme. It really did make me very angry how it refused to talk to my laptop, and I took my anger out on the theme. 미안해.

PS, you might want to edit the last two slides so that they have your faces on them and not mine.

UPDATE NOTE: my b! I left a red text box note to myself on the first slide. This upload doesn't have it tho.

I had to split my lesson into 4 days to give my co-teacher time to catch up with me..  So, let's start with:

Day 1:

-Questionnaire; I have different questions that they are to go around asking other students in class and collecting answers

Day 2:
-Started off class with the My Favorite Things RPS Game from Mirokii above
-Ppt
-2nd page of Listen section
-Clap game from Mirokii above (it took a bit for my students to really get it, but they loved it!)

Day 3:
-What's the Word
-Ppt
-Speak in textbook
-SLAM proposed by jennyb1910; I changed the SLAM cards since this was the first time we were going to play it and I'm still adjusting to the level of my students :)

Day 4:
-What's the Word
-ppt
-Real-life Scene; I copied the page and blanked out some words then had them partner up and memorize the text and speak to either myself or my co-teacher
-Mystery Box from ang-24; I changed a few of the questions, but they liked the huge differences in point values; we came no where close to finishing, but it was still enjoyed
