I'll start off this thread with a complete lesson for Chapter 10 Part I.  This covers the Listen & Speak 1 section, "That's impossible."

My students just finished midterms, so any textbook-based lesson at this time of year has to be presented in the right way to prevent a revolt.  So far, so good.  I briefly cover the expression "That's impossible;"  this is so similar to "I can't believe it" which the Grade 2 classes had 2 chapters ago, so I don't spend a lot of time on it.  Emphasize the meaning of "impossible" as it relates to the topic of the chapter: the future.

I review some silly and interesting inventions, and show a few short videos.  Then move on to the heart of the lesson, which has the students creating and presenting their own inventions to the class.  See the handout and lesson plan for more information.

It's worked out pretty well so far, though I've only tested it with lower-level classes so far.  There shouldn't be any problem adapting it to higher-level learners.

Some slides of the PPT have notes and links to the videos; more information available there and in the lesson plan.  As always, make sure the audio files are saved in the same directory as the PPT.

Hey pjblake,
Just wanted to say thanks for all the lessons you've been posting. They are very well planned out and put together. The time you put into it is obvious and i appreciate it.

In using your lesson I wanted to push the kids toward "outside the box" thinking so i played up the idea that "impossible" is often just a matter of perspective. in doing so I've found it useful to show the "solutions" to the illusions, I've also found both of the attached videos to be useful and good attention gatherers.
Finally i threw in a few more inventions leaning toward the cool or funny side of things.

last tip i'm teaching a class of 35 and i've found that it's worked best to have the kids do all their presentations in groups of 4 -5. smaller groups can get discouraged coming up with an original idea and the presentation time can end up taking to long and attention starts to drift. i'll also walk through the presentation a little more in detail and emphasize each student in the group needs to contribute during the presentation. Low levels can act out the usefulness of the invention, moderate students can all just speak a sentence but emphasizing this before they start helps keep everyone engaged since they know they'll have to face to class.

I've been opening with the coffee shop one, not directly relevant but it get's them engaged. so far i haven't had much in the way of extra time but i'd like to work in the Honda video after the illusions. Anyway here are the videos i got off of youtube and my version of your PPT. Thanks again man. Keep up the good work, you're obviously a great teacher.

FYI you'll likely have to replace all the videos in the PPT i'm on a work computer and don't have time to figure out how to zip everything in korean. sorry in advance. cheers all.

This is a complete lesson for Chapter 10, Part II.  It covers Listen & Speak 2, "What if ..."

Grade 2 covered the conditional if in Chapter 9, so this topic seems a bit redundant to me.  I thought it might be interesting to try "thinking outside the box," as JBrady1985 mentioned above.

The lesson starts with reviewing the conditional if and quickly introduces "What if ..." as asking a hypothetical question.  Do Listen & Speak 2 from the Workbook.  Then I take the "What if ..." concept and present the class with 3 classic moral dilemmas, the ones with the runaway train.  Read the dilemma to the class, and have your KT translate for optimal effect - it's really important that the students understand the problem.  Using the voting sheets I included in the attachments, have everyone circle A or B and put their vote in a box.  Tally the votes, and ask the students why they voted the way they did.  I would recommend giving a class point, candy, or whatever reward you have in place, to encourage discussion.

Finish the class with a game I borrowed from a GET friend of mine.  It practices the target language, but in a very unique way.  Each slide has a CLASS and TEAM sentence on it.  The entire class will read the CLASS sentence, then a select team will read the TEAM sentence.  However, after the CLASS sentence is read, a funny image will appear on the screen.  This image has nothing to do with the sentence, and is meant as a distraction.  The object of the game is to have the team read the sentence without smiling or laughing.  Anyone on the team that does eliminates that team.  Then the next team can try.  Instructions in more detail in the lesson plan.  I'd suggest teams of 3-5 students...the more in a team, the more likely someone will get the giggles.

As always, make sure to save the audio files in the same directory as the PPT and everything should work fine.  Some slides have notes; more information available there and in the lesson plan.

Great lesson as usual Blake thanks.

It takes a bit of work to get them to be brave enough to put their reasoning out there for the train problem but so far it's worked pretty well. Been incredibly busy with speaking tests this week so i haven't been able to add much but i revamped the Game PPT to include a number of gifs. It's worked really well so far though it's huge and somewhat slower as a result. I recommend saving the ppt to whatever computer you are playing it from rather than playing it from an external source.
The kids tend to laugh more and so get fewer points over all but they also care less and any time a group fails I have the class repeat the final dialogue together so there is still plenty of speaking. I also value the laughter in class more, it's been a stressful few weeks for these guys and i want to keep things light. Now sixty slides, several have my name and one has my KT's so you'll want to change that. cheers.

~Scratch that. Maximum file upload is 60,000 KB, new ppt is 72 (^_^);;; i'm uploading it as two separate ppt's so you can merge them on your own. ~
