My school still doesn't have the teacher's guides or the audio CD that go with this book, so I haven't started using it.  In the first class, I asked the students what we say when we meet each other for the first time, and guided them to four key phrases - 'Hello', 'What's your name?', 'Nice to meet you' and 'How are you?'.  I then played a ball game with an Angry Bird where they all had to stand up, one by one choose a friend, throw the ball to them and use the key phrases to meet each other.  This worked well as an ice breaker and also helped me to establish who is who in the class, and what their levels of proficiency are.
For this week I am using the intro PPT and the Budweiser advert after reviewing the lesson from last week.
I am also letting students write name cards to place on their desks so that I can attempt to learn some names.

I found the listening and speaking part of this chapter to be incredibly dry, so I turned it into a game. It's based on the Jigsaw Reading technique, roughly. If you don't know what that is, don't worry (but do google it - it's a good way to get kids to read).

This is for pages 10-11. I started it at the point where the stupid rope game is in the book (this rope game makes no sense and puts the kids to sleep).

Step 1
"So, I introduced myself to you last week, but I don't know who you are. Also, you are new to this school. Do you know everyone in the class?"
Students introduce themselves to other people in their group (of roughly 4-5), in the form, "My name is ____ and I like ____." Teacher walks around and asks the students to introduce themselves to her as well.

Link: "Did you already know people in your group? What about that group over there - do you know them? Or are you meeting them for the first time?"

Book: Listen and Check: Who met for the first time?
Listen to Sujin (and picture all the different ways to kill her). Ask the kids who knows who, and who was meeting for the first time. This is a good point to teach them the difference between "Nice to meet you" and "Nice to see you again" if you want to.

Link: Explain how Brian is introducing Mr Brown and Sujin to each other, because he knows them both but they met for the first time.

Step 2:
"Aha! Now the game has changed! New rule: you may not talk about yourself. You may only talk about your friends. Also, let's make the groups bigger." Pair groups together and get them to stand or sit around their desks. If kids don't want to move, get them to kawi bawi bo for it.

Students must introduce friends from their original group to new friends in the group that they have joined, in the form given in the book (Sora, this is my friend Jisu, etc).

Give them a while for this and walk around, asking them to introduce their new friends to you.

When they start getting loud or fidgety, it's time to move on. I threw in the last listening bit ("Where are they from?") and demonstrated an Aussie accent. If I had been more prepared (I did this impromptu) then I could have added a clip with accents demonstrating greetings in different cultures.

Instead, I had about 12 minutes left, so I threw in a team-building ice-breaker game called Bingo For Teachers Who Forgot To Copy The Bingo Card.

Write down 5 characteristics on the board.
E.g. "Has an animal on their clothes", "Wears glasses", "is the same height as me", "has the same favourite food as me", "can do 20 push ups", "can pick me up" and so on.

The students must run around and find a different person for each of those 5 things. They only have 5 minutes to do so. The first to find all five people must shout Bingo! and the game ends. When they're done, you can get them to stand up and sit down if they match the criteria, and if you have a winner or two who managed to find all 5 people, they must introduce their 5 new friends to the class. This is quite terrifying for them, so I broke my No Candy rule and gave my winner a sweet.

The kids loved it and I enjoyed it too. :)

Simple greetings PPT and then human bingo to get the students talking. I went over each box before the students started. I told them they could only write the same name twice. That way, they moved around and talked to different people. When they were done, I picked out a few and asked the students questions. Examples: Which sport do you play? What food are you allergic to? etc.
