Caution advised, a little vulgar, middle finger, but nothing the kids haven't seen before.

Thinking "The Island of Dr. Monroe" for this lesson.  Students look at the picture of the "mixed Animal" and think of what it can and can't  do.  I write "It can _____" on the board along with a list of verbs.  Next class plan to have students make their animal card and write what their animal can and can't do.  Suggestions welcomed.  :afro:

This is the lesson I am using this week. It is continuing on the theme of Can & Can't.

Includes a game of Twenty questions at the end using the target language:

Can it ______?

As always, I found of most of the material here form different lessons and combined it all.

@samuraiblues: Thanks for the inspiration. I ended up "borrowing" quite a lot of your material in my lesson.

This lesson reviews what animals can/can't do, and then moves onto making comparisons in the form "Lions can run faster than rabbits", "I can jump higher than you" etc.

-Introduction
-Baskin Robbins 31 speaking game
-Writing practice
-Write&run game

For this chapter my Co teacher asked me to focus on pg.103 part B which looks at the present progressive(continuous). Hope this helps anyone who is also asked to teach grammar. A lot of the material and the game came from other posts on this site.

Great ideas! I wish I would have checked on here before.

For this lesson, I did the following:

YouTube: I used the video “carnaval des animaux-camille st saens” as an opener. We discussed the animal and what it can do in the video.

Also, the one titled “Le carnaval des animaux - de Andy Sommer et gordon” would work as well.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OLu2n7Prvzc]

Worksheet: “Animal Riddles & Vocabulary” (Double-sided printing)
I introduced and reviewed the vocabulary given on the worksheet, and then let them solve the riddles. I emphasized that they should complete the riddles before working on word search. The word search is really for students who finish the riddles quickly. My G1 classes are mixed, and the students finish at different speeds.

NOTE: The WS was a quick creation, so I am attaching the ppt version in case you want to make changes. Also, there is a typo in the word search; I typed “truck” instead of “trunk.”

Student Riddles:
The students pulled an animal card from the stack and had to write at least four (4) sentences about the animal on small slips of paper. [Next time, I will definitely emphasize using “be good at,” as well as “can~.”]

The animal cards are in this file: “Animal Pics to Single PPT Slide.”

I collected the animal cards and completed slips of paper as the students finished.

Students who finished their own riddles could help their peers or continue working on the word search.

After class, I inserted their riddles into the “Pass the Bomb” game. We will actually play this next class. Credit to the wonderful original creator of the template.

For example purposes, I have attached that game file. See “1-1 Student Animal Riddles – Pass the Bombs.”

Hope all this helps someone!

Before the Lesson: Print the animal card file or use your own.

Note: You can change the time length of each part and organize the lesson to suit your students.

For me, the lessons flow as follows…
Day 1:
(1) I play “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” as the students enter the classroom with the first slide showing.
(2) I start the ppt, direct the students to the L5 title pages and teach them the main functions and forms. (You can add slides to introduce the material more thoroughly. I generally just use the whiteboard and talk them through them fairly quickly. My coT explains as needed.)
(3) I direct the students to L&S1 (p. 92) and complete it. (While they are practicing the Part C dialog in pairs, I give each student an animal card face down and tell them not to look at them.)
(4) I go back to the ppt to teach the students how to play 20 Questions. We play until the end of class. (My students really get into it.)
***Be sure to correct their questions as they go.

Day 2:
(1) I play a Lion King song as the students enter (I probably show the video clip, not the first slide, until just before the bell will ring.
(2) I start the ppt, direct the students to ItC (p. 94), and complete it.
(3) Without going to the ppt, I backtrack to L&S2 (p.93) and complete the work with the students.
(4) Back to the ppt, I introduce our Charades game with relevant dialog. We play the game until the end of class.

+Animal Riddles
If the students manage to complete all the material much faster than I expect, I will have the students make animal riddles. I do not really expect them to, but, just in case, I will print out multiple copies of slide #10 (see lesson ppt), cut out the slips, and hand them out for the students to write a riddle on them. (Maybe in pairs --- dependent on time)

**If you really want to have them write riddles, you could potentially....
Day 1: Song  L&S1  20 Questions (only a few animals)  L&S2A-B  Assign an animal to research for HW. They should find at least one surprising thing about their animal
Day 2: Song  ItC  Make riddles (include surprising fact)  Have a few volunteers share their riddles. (Highlight the surprising facts.)  L&S2C (1. Have them practice the dialog as is. 2. Tell them to change the dialog to talk about their animal)  Charades
