Lesson 1: All About Me
« on: March 02, 2011, 02:12:29 pm »
1st grade Lesson 1:  All about me

Okay so I have been informed that I would only be teaching listening and speaking (first 2 pages of every lesson) and then 3 of my own about the same topic. (i see my students 2 times a week, and I've been told that we'd spend 2 weeks on 1 topic, so thats 4 classes/periods per topic)...   This is part of my lesson from the actual textbook (the lesson where I teach the first 2 pages).

I've adapted the activity in the TEXTBOOK page 13.  Number A,B and C will be as is (at least until I've listened to the CD) but with D I'm doing it as an activity:

D: Check and Talk (pg.13)
In classroom teams write down the member’s names (Choose English names) As a group, decide what he/she is like and ask about interests.  Fill this in on the introduction grids.  (Eg, Tony / Nice / Music)
I will give each student a chance to introduce one other member of the group to the classroom by using key sentences. (This is my friend, Anne. She is nice.  She likes science)

After this I will have a clapping game (I only realized after that this is actually a drinking game, but this is my first middle school lesson ever, so I might have that on my brain...)  Hope the instructions are clear:

Clapping game:
Each student will receive two name stickers. (those labels you can print on??)  On one they will write their English name (just for this lesson if you dont use english names) and on the other they will write their “like”.  Eg Sports.
In groups, students will do a clapping game as follows: (students clap in beats of 3)
S1 (Tony):  She is Anna, She likes sports.  (Anna’s turn, because Tony called her name)
(Anna):  He is Peter, He likes science.
(Peter):  He is Tony, He likes Music.
(Students read off the stickers that the students are wearing.  When they can complete the sentences without error (eg name all the students and their likes), remove the stickers.  When they make mistakes, they get a letter from a word (E.g. N-A-M-E), get 1 wrong = N, get 2 wrong = A.  Once they have all 4 letters (NAME) they are out. The last person left is the winner)

I also have a Pass the Ball game, just for fun.  It's SUPER simple.  Not much change in questions at all - basically just for fun as I'm in a new school and we don't know each other.. so it's just a pass the ball game with a bunch of pics of megaphones and students have to introduce themselves.  There are some random slides where a student "wins" a candy, or ones where they have to stand up with a friend and do the introduction.  The whole pass the ball game is just for fun while they still practice the introductions.

Feel free to absolutely criticize this lesson - like I've said - I've NEVER taught middle school before, so this is just 2 activities I'm using... and I'm trying to base it on my previous "experience" teaching low level elementary... so any criticism would actually be very helpful!!

Thanks!!

I downloaded your worksheet and ppt for the pass the ball game. Looks good! As for the lesson I think it looks great and I'm sure the kids will like it. I will be sure to post whatever I come up with for this unit. Thanks!

Lesson 1: All About Me (Part 1)
« Reply #3 on: March 04, 2011, 09:45:18 am »
I used this textbook last year and through a combination of activities I found online and a few I made myself, I will be posting the lessons I kept (and will be reusing) from last year. Please feel free to use as much or as little of this material as you like.

At my school I just use the textbooks for "Listen and Talk" and "In Conversation". This typically takes up 20 minutes of the lesson and I am left with 25 minutes or so to do whatever I want. Altogether I usually spend 2 periods for each lesson in the text.
The following is what I did (and will do for my new first graders) for Lesson 1, Part 1:

Since I was a new teacher last year I began each class' first lesson with an introductory guessing game about myself. Your students will be curious about you and it's a good idea to share about yourself before you ask them to share anything. I have attached a powerpoint (Welcome to English Class) which you can modify with your own pics and info. This first part took maybe 15-20 minutes including a Q&A period.

For the second part of the class, I handed out different coloured candies (one or two to each student). Each colour corresponded to something they had to tell me about themselves (blue=your family, red=your favourite singer, etc.). This worked really well as they were excited for the candy and more willing to talk after I already did. You could also substitute the candy for anything colourful (coloured paper even). It's great because it's almost no-prep. Hope it helps!

Lesson 1: All About Me (Part 2)
« Reply #4 on: March 04, 2011, 10:10:09 am »
For the second class in lesson 1, I made a powerpoint which involves a few different activities. The first is a different form of BINGO that allows the students to walk around the classroom asking questions to their peers. They must ask each classmate at least one question in order to fill out the card correctly and the first person to finish wins.

The second activity uses the information from the BINGO game. Each student will read 2 sentences about their partner (from the BINGO sheet) and the students will reply according to the powerpoint.

The last activity is similar in which the students will work in pairs to form their own introductory dialogue. Each dialogue must answer the 3 simple questions provided and there is an example in the last slide if they need help. Depending on the time you can have them present these dialogues to the class.

I've just completed my ppts for this chapter. ignore all the crazy rules/points things at the start.

It's spilt over two lessons but they're in the same powerpoint for easyness.

Good luck kelgriffiths!  We have all been there.  I can remember my first week at middle school and feeling sick.  I soon rallied and the time and lessons started to go really well.  Use Waygook as much as you can for lesson plans and ideas.  I wish I had known about this site when I first started teaching at a public school.  Again, good luck!

I have an advanced grade 1 class and they ALL know how to say "I am from Korea... I like music... " and they also know how to introduce each other. I made this lesson to get a bit deeper into describing peoples personality traits and thought I'd post it since I have used so much of everyone's awesome stuff. I have essentially taken bits and pieces of other materials for worksheets and the Mario game and put in my own PPT. Thanks to everyone who contributes!

Great stuff, ejmaclaine! Thanks for uploading. Using your idea with the Mario game, I created a low-level version of the Mario game that uses only the very simplest material from the chapter. I'll post more material for this chapter as I get it completed.

Hey,

Has anyone started the grade 2 lesson 1, The new school year? Im also a new middle school teacher, i just do the talking part and activities?

Aims 87, are you using the same books?  By Johanna L. Haas?  I believe the Grade 2 lesson 1 topic is "The real champion" and is about sports and how often you play them.  (Or did you mean has anyone from this year started them yet - in which case, check out the tread for middle school grade 2 for johanna haas books - also on waygook)   :)

Kelgriffiths - my second year in korea, but first for teaching middle and high school.  I felt HORRIBLE on friday, cause this was just so crazy! But already feeling more in control now. :)  Hang in there!

Here is my Prezi on G1 Lesson 1. The format isn't set yet so that's what it's all over the place. Using the co-teacher to help translate the different adjectives. I'm sure most people are spending 2 classes on each lesson, this is Part 1. Focus is introducing yourself, introducing other people, and a intro. to personalities and adjectives to use when describing personalities. There is an assignment at the end for the Ss to bring a photo to the next class of a friend or family member for them to introduce and describe. Also, as a time-filler, play the "4-Corners" game:

4 Corners Categories:
K-Pop Bands
Food
Seasons
Personality traits

Example: Corner 1-Favorite food is pizza, Corner 2-Favorite food is, Corner 3-Favorite food is hamburgers, Corner 4-Favorite food is chicken.

Yes go ahead :) I'm trying out using both class and team points this term. Class points are for the whole class being quiet / exceptionally good, whereas team points will be for games/speaking activities - one team will win each week and get a sticker on their scorecard. It might get a little complicated but I'll give it a go. I used just class points last year and it worked ok but just wanted to have added incentive to behave :)

Here's my lesson plan. I'm told to use the textbook in my classes...

I've attached a Guess Who game with an answer sheet (or a prompt sheet I guess you could call it). My students have told me that they really like that game.

Feedback is encouraged. :)

Am teaching the grammar section. Here's a ppt, I do chanting with a drum, and whip through it quite quickly. For a lot of the students, it's review. Make is snappy and fun.
Use arms, legs etc.

A V-Bingo game at the end of ppt.  See attached.

I move on to the Activities Book after this...

This was a pretty good chapter to kill two birds with one stone. introduce yourself and break into the lesson plan. I included a quick game of 2 halves (a simpler version of 4 corners).

The lesson is pretty simple. You can break through it for use as a template almost.

I haven't taught it yet. So feedback would be helpful. I'm really hopings its not too long or too easy for my students.
