With my PEO cutting off youtube, it's forced me into a spot of being a little more prepared for some of my classes (i.e. downloading the songs at home and transferring them to school, as opposed to sourcing them in my pretty lengthy time between classes.

I've decided that I'd like to teach the kids a new song every 3 or 4 weeks, as it's something they really enjoy in the class. The level is generally pretty low in my school, but ones I've found that work a treat (I vary according to levels but roughly)

1st-3rd Grade - Peter Wetherhill's Hello Song, ABC (standard), and the usual vocabulary stuff (days of the week, months of the year)

4th-6th grade - I can (don't know the artist, have it on a usb but can try and upload it), Hello Goodbye - The Beatles, Everywhere we go people always ask us/(people wanna know) - acapella,

Twist and Shout works well as a repeat and singalong song (like the previous one too).

I'm sure there are otehr songs I play but I can't think of them off the top of my head.

The pronouns song from Genki English is pretty good. The full song is available on the site. It practices using sentences to say "I am hungry," "you are," "he is," "she is," "they are," and "we are."

My third-grade students were much bigger fans of the Rock & Roll ABC song than the standard one. For initially learning the letter names, you might try the slower ABC song from freeabcsongs.com. The main difference is that lmnop isn't all mashed together, so your students will learn not to drop letters before moving on to faster-paced versions.

If you look up some Raffi songs, they might work for 4th grade towards the middle of the year, or even for fifth grade. My students liked Down By the Bay. Younger students go for lots of classic singalong songs, like Bingo and Old MacDonald. Some of them know the songs, but most of them don't - at least not in English.

For 4th-6th grade, I suggest Yellow Submarine and REM's Shiny Happy People. Last year's grade 5 liked Lemon Tree. (There's a simple animation on YouTube that works really well.) Umbrella by Rhianna worked well in Grade 1 middle school, so that could be an option for grade 6. Another song that grades 5 and 6 really liked was Life is Cool, by Sweetbox. You should definitely give that one a listen.

The songs that worked well for me:

Lemon Tree (The animated one with subs) for 5th and 6th graders

Elephant song (by Eric Herman). I made subs for this song and a few others but was unable to upload them as .mp4 and .srt files aren't uploadable. If you want them I can email them to you.

The Duck song (The annoying duck asking for grapes)

On melancholy Hill by the Gorillaz.

Me! Me! ABC by Ingrid Von Bergman (sp?) I haven't been able to find this one but my co-teacher used it last year with 3rd & 4th graders and it was a solid hit. As was Walking through the jungle.

For 2nd graders. Today, after reviewing the standard ABC song (twinkle version), I went straight away and taught A-I phonics using this website http://www.supersimpleabcs.com/ for a chant moreso than a song. (<-meant for yourng learners since they can also do motions for each pictures).
you can download off of youtube a-i and j-r. but you would probably use the link for r-z. Regardless if they know their phonics, it's good for review.

Hi there,

I was wondering if any of you brilliant teachers out there have a magical resource you use for finding songs that incorporate target language. I know some teacher use pop songs to help students learn target language but most of the students at my school have a relatively low level of English so pop songs aren't ideal for them.

I've searched a little on google and youtube but I usually am not able to find anything stellar or I get overwhelmed. My co-teacher has asked my to find multiple songs for each lesson but she doesn't seem to want to share with me the sites she uses to find songs (and she does seem to find some good ones). Actually, I'm not sure why she even wants me to find songs but I guess that's not the point. ???

Anyway, any resources you use would be helpful. Also, this might be a good thread to start posting random songs on if there isn't one already.

I got my school to purchase the song pack from http://www.supersimplesongs.com and have been using them with kindergarten and grades 1-2 with a pretty good success rate. For grades 3-6 I also like the busy beavers website mentioned before.

DreamEnglish.com and its sister site, FreeABCsongs.com, both have a lot of good songs for younger learners. There are free MP3s, some free videos, and also samples of some songs he'd like to be paid for.

GenkiEnglish has a lot of great songs, but you have to buy the Download Pack (quite pricey) for access to most of them. There are a couple that are available in their entirety (attached).

This song has lyrics that are easy to understand. My co suggested it and we used this worksheet to go along! There are several versions of the song available on youtube to choose from.
