Lesson 2: Welcome to the Show
« Reply #1 on: March 04, 2011, 01:05:29 pm »
Part 1:
- 'Listen and Talk' and 'In Conversation'.
- I found a good powerpoint on this site but I wasn't sure how to link it here so I'm just reposting the powerpoint, "What do you think? ppt."
- After going through the powerpoint the students will choose their own subjects and ask their partners what they think. They will then choose 2 subjects each and present their opinions to the class

Part 2:
- "Music Opinions" powerpoint
Students will watch segments of music videos from a variety of genres and then we will discuss what they think of each individual artist and the genre as a whole using the worksheet provided. You can modify the grid and replace it with adjectives or phrases instead of the 1-10 scale to make things more clear and then have the students present their opinion of 1-2 genres to the class.

Hi Knickknack, how were you able to insert the music videos directly into the powerpoint? Thanks!

Lianne - if you want to embed a video then - follow this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hChq5drjQl4
as the video says, you will need internet access still in the classroom when presenting.
If you physically want the whole video in your ppt, then you need get something like "Orbit Downloader" (google search) which will allow you to "grab" videos off youtube. Then you insert them like you would a picture. This however makes your ppt files massif like

I notice that some of you are planning music related content for this lesson. There's a song called 'Ladies and Gentlemen" by Saliva that's all about being invited to a show. Simple lyrics and lots of repetition. The video for the song might also provide good content.
cheers.

I did a similar ppt as the one posted below but had the students say what they thought about the music/actor/sports star/dance/book/movies.  They get into groups of 4-5 and discuss with their group first, then one group shares their group thoughts for each slide.

The second lesson with this chapt. I have them create their own shows (very similar to the cut out puppets) and have the groups again share their thoughts of the students shows.  They are in the same group as the prior lesson, so they have a chance to take time outside of class to really make a good show.

I have attached the ppt below!

it might be fun to use amihotornot for this lesson, but it is blocked by my school.

charbojr: what kind of materials did you give them to make the shows?  did they make puppets?
i almost always work with groups of six, i think thats too many people to make a show like that, i'm sure some students wouldnt participate

What do you think of ___? Board Game

Adapted from somewhere. I used this with the textbook and also made sure that I elicited a lot of adjectives before we started. Change it however you want. Usually takes about 20 minutes if the students are diligent.

Not so fantastic, but it was the only way I could think of getting students to repeat this one A LOT.

hankmcmasters,

I did puppets but not as full on as the book has, too much prep time and not enough time to put on your shows.  A folding paper puppet works great...

or also, cutting out magazine faces and having them do a small skit with the famous peoples faces (mouths cut out as well) could work just fine.  I have groups of 5-6 for this, its hit or miss if they all get involved, but the majority like this... especially after the ppt.  maybe a dance routine to a song (pull up on youtube).  options are endless!

hope that helps!

@Lianne474:
I'm really sorry but when I just tried to re-embed the links, they didn't work.  :(
I guess you'll just have to use youtube for each video. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Hey guys, I just finished this Introduction PPT for this morning's classes and it went really great.  I started with the powerpoint and while going through, I wrote the students' descriptive words and phrases on the board.  They filled the whole board... I was amazed~! Then I moved onto the book, p.22~25. When it came to p.25 I had the students use the adjectives from the board to write what they thought about each thing.  It worked great.  It also made it really easy for them to do the dialogue with their partners. Hopefully this will be helpful to those of you who are just starting out.  Have a great day~~!!!!

Here's what I've been using:

I used the ppt to warm them up (I copied some pictures from one of the first ppts on here - thanks), then went into my own version of hot or not. I couldn't remember exactly how to play it so I improvised. The rules are on the slide. My students surprisingly got really creative and pulled out adjectives I didn't even know they knew and it went on for a long time. They really enjoyed it, too.

Then I used the Mario Pass the Ball template from Daejeon and made a quick game for them. They also really liked that.
I have the OK GO This too shall pass video on the ending slide in case there is extra class time, but some classes didn't even get through the Hot or Not so it's more than enough for a class period.
Enjoy!

haha

i used that 5 layer hamburger picture in one of my presentations last semester.

that pass the ball game is really swell.  maybe i should spend more time looking through those games.  i dont actually have balls tho.  i might change it to pass the pencil case

my ppt has more pictures... i figure it bores them to see too much text, but if the students need to see examples, i can just write them on the board.
for the pictures at the end i had the students practice asking a partner "what do you think of small faces?"  etc.  then we watched some videos and did some more dialogs, both in pairs and as a class.

next week i'm going to have them watch some other videos, listen to some songs, and look at books.  they're going to fill out my handout and chat up everyone.  maybe theyre going to pass the pencil case before as a warm up.  thanks again for that

@ hankmcmasters - my "ball" is a wadded up piece of paper that I swipe out of the recycling before class...

Hello all!

I just thought I'd share an easy activity idea that I just used in my class for this lesson.

After teaching the core expressions, I played this I agree/I disagree game:

I printed out 2 sheets of paper: 1 that read "I agree." and 1 that read "I don't agree."

I posted the sheets on opposite sides of the classroom and instructed students to listen as I read a number of opinion statements.  For each statement, I instructed students to move to the side of the classroom that represented their opinion.  Then, I used a piece of chocolate as an incentive and chose one student to answer the follow-up "What do you think about..." question with their own opinion.

I've attached the word doc with the sentences I used in my class. This game was very successful and students got really into the activity! Probably lasted about 20-25 minutes? Good luck everyone!

Hey all,

great lessons. Here is mine (NOTE: I have taken a few of your lessons and combined them :) )

Intro: Well, well, well by Duffy (write down any english words you hear!). Slang of the day: "give someone the third degree" (included on PPT)

End: Youtube videos! What do you think of this song? See worksheet.

Thanks!  ;D
