So I was going crazy with this chapter (needed six lessons...arg....) and for the last lesson I slapped this together.  I know that it can be made better than it is, but I was surprised at just how much the students got into it.

This focused on the country/nationality portion.  I threw in ethnicity too and we had spent some time going over the differences between those three words.  Then I explained the rules for changing the country over to the nationality and let the kids loose on a worksheet.

I cannot explain why but they freakin' loved it!

This could easily be changes around and improved on so please have at it.

Oh I found the worksheet knocking around somewhere on the web...cannot for the life of me recall where I got it from because it was a long time ago...

Thanks ChicagoHotdog! I needed the extra class to fill in for review too.
how did you work your bingo game by the way?
Did you have them write down nationalities and then you read out the country name?
My first day I watched a few lessons and had my first class which was a Grade 2 class or something like that. I thought every things was great until a kid ddong-chimmed me.

Yeah sorry about that.

Basically yeah, I had them write down the nationalities on their board using the worksheet.  Then they had to put the worksheets away and I would say "I am from...." and completely unprompted the entire class would say "I am..." as they searched their sheets.  I was dumbfounded to be honest.  And my KT swears that she skipped that section.

When they would get a BINGO I would spot check them on one of the responses and ask what had changed (like ends in -ese, or ends in -ian).

One of those lessons where I expected to be pulling teeth and was pleasantly surprised.

Thanks! This will be a lot of fun, I'm sure. The story of your class's enthusiasm has motivated me, haha - my third graders are all like 싫어어어어어어~ usually.

They had a lot of fun guessing some of the more complicated ones...like Senegal.  And I completely baffled them with Swiss...because of course in Korean the name for the country is Swiss.  They giggled their way through Switzerland.  Make it a bit of a race (I always have a competition of some sort in every class) and they go crazy.

They liked the part where I walked them through my ethnic background.  The highest student in class started laughing as they kept coming and said "Teacher!  You from Europe.  Just all of Europe."  Well...I'm from northern Europe...but when you're used to everyone having the same ethnic background my melting pot is something of a surprise.

Lesson 4: Sentences using thinks, where, & when
« Reply #85 on: May 27, 2013, 06:53:40 PM »
Here are some scrambled sentences that I made that relate to this lesson. The sentences either follow the structure (subject + thinks) or contain the adverbs "where" and "when". Some of the sentences are also compound sentences that connect with the conjunction "because".

Each sentence has phrases that are spaced farther apart. The big spaces are where I would cut the phrases. After that I put each sentence in a separate envelope and wrote a number on each one. Then I placed the envelopes on a desk in front of the room.

I would divide the class into groups of 3 or 4, and each group is only allowed to grab one envelope at a time. Whenever a group places the phrases in the correct order, they will write the sentence out on a separate sheet of paper.

To prevent this activity from getting too chaotic and confusing, I only allowed the groups to take ONE envelope at a time. After they are finished making that sentence, they should put all of the phrases back into the envelope, and grab a new envelope.

Be sure to tell the students to write the envelope number with their sentences so that they won't grab the same one again. The time for this activity is at your discretion. I limited the time to 16-18 minutes. Hope this explanation was helpful 8)

What is the explanation for sports jigsaw?
I do not see any instructions so I cannot implement this one to my students
if I don't know exactly how it goes.

Hello Teacherwalters,

I apologize for not posting the full explanation of the sentence jigsaw activity earlier. There was a lot of slow down on the website at the time that I had posted this and I meant to come back to submit the info. My original post above has been modified to contain the full details on doing the activity.
