Need ideas for a "science" class
« on: March 25, 2013, 12:11:47 PM »
The science teacher at my middle school wants me to teach four sessions of three hours each to the advanced science classes. I don't know how I'm going to keep these kids' attention for that long, especially when they don't really speak English and I don't know all that much about science. So far I've thought of doing an egg-drop, making our own bouncy balls, and various other little kid sciencey activities, but how do I fill up three hours? And how do I find activities that aren't too childish for them, but also don't use very high-level technical English?

Egg drop can be good, you can get cheap straws at some of the stationary shops. You might want to do it in groups though. I tried to do one in elementary school during a summer camp and the students didn't seem to want to to it on their own.

You could do something about the different states of matter. Ice-->Water-->Steam sort of thing. You can make some non-Newtonian fluid very easily with starch and water. I couldn't find corn starch, but potato starch was cheap and really easy to find. It can be a bit messy but the students are really interested by the way it acts both like a solid and a liquid under different circumstances.

You can make a natural litmus test using the water from boiled red cabbage.

Building towers of straws, give each team the same amount of straws and around a meter of tape. See who can build the tallest tower and the sturdiest one (earthquake test.

Static electricity, get some balloon and demonstrate how you can get them to stick to surfaces. If you can have some running water the static on a balloon will bend the stream.

Look at different optical illusions. Show how by moving static images you can trick the eye into seeing motion.

Create a partial vacuum to suck an egg into a bottle.

Make an electromagnet.

Make a simple motor.

Liquid density experiment.

Paper airplane distance contest.

Hopefully if the results are surprising or interesting they'll stick with it. Maybe save the more interesting ones for last and use it like a carrot on a stick. So if they do well on the early stuff they can do a big mentos and diet coke sort of thing.

Assign them to teams and make competitions, if you have the same kids for all 4 sessions you could make them the champions. Something like trying to build a strong bridge with limited materials that can hold the most weight. Do some experiments that are fun to observe, then do a long one that takes some critical thinking to find an innovative solution.

I'm not sure either, but I'm told that I will be doing a physics themed summer camp, so have been gathering ideas.

There's some stuff, short videos/worksheets on various stuff at bogglesworldesl.com/esl_science

and you could use some simple videos/ ideas from
pbs.org/teachers/classroom
the scigirls series will have fun experiments, etc., on it.

Apart from that maybe throw in a little 'The Big Bang Theory', especially the pranks they set-up.

As far as the practical is concerned, it depends on your budget. You may just have enough to get the kids making trebuchets, and playfully studying projectiles. I'm guessing there's no point in dreaming of getting liquid nitrogen, and getting to play with superconductivity! Oh well.

I did a science camp last year: I did an egg drop, paper airplanes (how far will different models travel inside and outside), paper bridges (20 sheets of paper and limited amount of tape - see which bridge holds the most weight), and ice-cream in a bag.  All went over well.

You could always try the alien egg experiment to take up a little class time over 2-3 days...

Thanks for the fantastic suggestions, guys. It'll be interesting trying to get my school to buy all the materials, but hopefully the kids will have fun.

Do the traditional volcano experiment with baking soda and vinegar.

Get the students to make their own volcano from paper mache, paint it, then make lava!

If you can get your hands on popsicle sticks do a bridge making contest.
My middle school did this project every year and it was a competition between classes to see who could build the strongest bridge. At the end test them all in a competition by putting heavy objects on them.
(one was so strong that it took two grown ups to stand on it before it broke apart)
Last bridge standing wins!

My school is experimenting with an English immersion class, so I get to teach 20 minutes of a Korean science class every other week for M1, M2 and M3. They give me the topics, so some of them are good and some suck.

Kids also get really into making foldables (like mnemonic origami).  So try googling science foldables for some awesome ideas about things kids can fold and label instead of worksheets.

Also, you could check out some of the science-y TEDtalks.  They all have Korean subtitles so they can be used for all levels (that are old enough to understand the concepts).

These are the lessons I've done so far, they are only supposed to go for 20 minutes, but most of the time I'm a bit rushed, so you can stretch some a little longer and build off these: Igneous rocks, Layers of the Earth, Specific Heat, Thermal Expansion, Five Senses (although I only did sight due to time constraints), and Drugs and the Brain.
Use coupon code QAB484 at www.iherb.com for $5 off your first order ($10 off $40 or more).  Vitamins, supplements, personal care, organic food and more delivered cheaply to Korea to sate that mac 'n' cheese craving. ;-)

Yeah, huge thanks to Zeegs. shannajw, thanks a lot for your input too. It sounds like your school has a better idea of what they want to do with the class. Mine literally couldn't tell me their goal for what the students would get out of the class; they just told me to do "science English" and "make sure the kids have fun" and then left me about a week to plan for the first class. Each session is also three hours long, and I feel terrible for the kids who have to sit through it. Argh. All the suggestions have been really helpful, guys.

There's load of stuff around on space and the solar system, I did a whole camp on it. You don't just need to restrict yourself to ESL materials there's lots for elementary age native speakers that are suitable for middle schooler ESL students.

Are we talking realistic science/space movies or more fantastical?

If the latter then there's a bunch.  Wall-E being the one that comes to mind the quickest.

Hmm I would prefer something fantastical and realistic. I didn't really want to show an animation. Thanks for the suggestion :)

Was there a limit to how many popsicle sticks you gave each group or class to use to make the bridge? This sounds like  a fun idea, just wondering how it would work with large class sizes (12 classes, with 33-34 students each). Thanks so much!

maybe this site could give you some ideas....

This is a list of just science fiction movies in general; not just space.
The Martian might be another one that's good and would have korean subtitles somewhere.
