So the listen and talk part of chapter 9 seems to have 2 language points, 'have you ever..' and 'what would you do if...'. So for the first week, I'm going to focus on the 'have you ever' parts. They are in textbook page 146 A, 147 C, Activities book page 144 A, 145 A, 146 A, 147 A. Then on the back of their dialogue papers, I'll instruct the students to write their names in the center of the paper, then draw five pictures of what they have done, and what they haven't done, but would like to. The PPT describes how to do this, but I'll make my own example paper using the examples from the PPT. I'll provide some markers or colored pencils for the students to make their papers, afterwards, I'll choose a few to stand, introduce themselves and tell the class about their papers.

I'm having a problem with finding an activity that will go with this in a class for 35+.
I tried to do an M&M race, but the lower level classes aren't cooperating.  :(

I do suggest going over past participles before introducing the key phrase, "have you ever..."

Hey everyone! Here is what I came up with for L9. I teach advanced students, but the only part lower level students might have difficulty with would be the worksheet at the end and the mystery in the beginning. Oh, and you'll have to take out the pictures with me in it and replace them with your own!

Feedback always appreciated!

L9:

- Introduce subject
- Speaking warm-up
- Mystery about the parachute man
- Introduce key phrases
- Show examples
- Play Pyramid Game (Rules are in ppt.)
- Art with Salt video, see if students can guess "The Joker" before video finishes. I reward them with a stamp, but you can choose whatever you want...
- 2nd key phrase intro
- Examples
- Do the worksheet

My simple version.

- Start off with a question and answer period. Example: what did you do for chueseok? What did you do last weekend? etc, etc
- Review last lesson
- Introduce lesson with my pptx version (a mix of other peoples version)
- Have students complete handout then have a few students present at least 4 of their findings in class
- Listen and complete Rod Stewart version of have you ever seen the rain (corny, I know)

I have done this lesson with both boys and girls. They both seemed to like it, or maybe they were just being nice. Who knows, anyways enjoy.
Please note if you're using MS Powerpoint 97-2003 version you may need to reformat some of the text boxes.

Here's my lesson. Attached is my ppt and ppt game. Focus mainly on 'Have you ever _____', 'What would you do if _____' and 'If I were _____ I would _____'

Simple plan:

1) Recap on last week
2) Introduce first key term 'Have you ______' 'Yes I have/no I haven't' Get students to say and put their hands up if they have done those things.
3) Show video clip of Glee 'I have never' Ask them who has done those things. Pause clip after each question is asked to the cast. (Felt good to introduce my favourite drinking game into the classroom...without the booze obviously haha)
4) Pages 146+147 from the book (Just the 'Have you ever' exercises)
5) Introduce second key term 'If I were _____ I would _____'
6) Run through some examples of 'If I were _____ I would _____'
7) Show students the music clip of Beyonce 'If I were a Boy'. Ask them to listen to what she would do if she was a boy.
8) Pages 147-148 from the book if there is time.
9) Game time. Play the Mario game. Big thanks to the original creator  :)

This is a game for the "If I were...I would..." part of the book. It's a pretty simple little game where I ask a hypothetical question to my student teams and they pick one of my answers. For example, "If you could be a superhero, which superhero would you be?"  and I have pictures of Spiderman, Superman, Wonder woman, etc. Click on the name and it will reveal points or the bomb. Listen closely on that first question though because I misheard "Ironman" as "Batman" and I swear my kids were screaming "Heart! Heart!"  but they meant "The Hulk."

I think there's 6 hypothetical questions total and each one has 6 possible answers. My kids really liked it!

the mario game is genius! What a great idea. I'll be using it next week as a filler to space out the lame mid-term exam prep stuff!

I've attached the Angry Birds Chapter 9 Review. (Using Daejon's template)

What would you do if you were a girl?

It makes the class interesting :)

@ Stuart.a.walton.... .
I owe you big time. This Mario Game is seriously amazing. Thanks so much for posting it!!! I pretty much copied all the lessons above and used this at the end. What a hit!!! A great way to make a simple lesson a LOT more fun.

I have only just started planning for this lesson but I wanted to give some of my ideas as I am going to be using some of yours. :) I plan on doing a listening with "If I had a million dollars" by the barenaked ladies. The song is not only awesome it is also funny and they are Canadian :D. You could make an easy worksheet using the lyrics with blanks to fill in. It may also be fun to let them try and guess some of the blanks before you play the song. Especially as their last lesson was writing a poem. Thanks again for everything!

In response to a.ashfield 17.....
Great idea!! A fill in the blank activity would go great paired with this youtube video....

I will show the youtube video to my students, and give the lyrics to them. They will watch the screen, look at the pictures, listen to the words and follow along with the lyrics in front of them. After the song is over, they will flip the lyrics sheet over and answer the 10 questions (5 things the singer would buy with a million dollars, and five things YOU would buy with a million dollars). It's very clearly sung and I think it will be easy for my extremely low level 3rd graders to comprehend. Thanks!!

How do students know what level they are on?  Did I miss something?

Sorry if my directions weren't clear! I use the powerpoint directions I put on there as more of a guideline for the smarter students, and then just model it with my co-teacher. The way I play it, students will be walking around/mingling and to know what level they are on, they will be repeating their "key phrase" out loud. Constantly, so that they get practice with it as well. In all honesty, it rarely turns out like that. Usually they just run around shouting 1...or 2 or whatever level they are on. But with my well-behaved classes, the game works pretty decent. Hope that helped! Any more questions just ask! ^^

Have you ever...

Here's my lesson. The game is sort of like bingo. You don't need to prepare anything; just have students make 12 squares on a sheet of paper for their cards. They'll move around the room asking the questions. The last activity is a good time filler, I always let students choose the next person to "voulenteer" and they can ask them whatever they want: "Have you ever_____?"

Great ppt. and amazing game you have there.  It was a big hit in my classroom, and I have you to thank for it.

However... you might want to review the slide "Have you sang Kareoke before?"  It should be "Have you sung Kareoke before?"

Almost missed it myself... 5 minutes before the lesson I caught it!

I also used these two related Youtube videos for this lesson, as a kind of filler. My kids really liked it.

1. "The Mystery of the Hope Diamond"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zRqKsoT4vuQ

My kids are a super low level and so I showed them this 5 min video and asked some questions about it afterwards. The English is pretty simple and clear, though you may have to write some of the more difficult words on the board. It's basically about the curse of the Hope Diamond and its history. We talked about curses and jinxes, if they believe they are real, and who might have placed a curse on the diamond.

2. Marylin Monroe's "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zRqKsoT4vuQ

I showed them this video for fun at the end of class after teaching them diamonds' nickname, girls' best friend, vs. man's best friend (the dog, haha). I asked which was a better best friend, and EVERYONE said dogs haha!!!

Hope this inspires you if you get stuck.... though this is the first chapter in the book I've had TOO much material to teach.
