First Day of Class - Classroom Rules
« on: March 03, 2011, 03:22:00 PM »
I made a simple classroom ppt for explaining the rules of the classroom. There is one before I made edits and then one that had additional verbal cues that I use and less transition cues. The classroom rules were just simple ones like listen, quiet voices (explained as during group activities, not all the time), raise your hand (so everyone gets a chance to participate), try hard (to speak English at all times)

Each signal/transition cue we practiced a few times and then at the end of that section we mixed them up to practice them all.

After the Commands/verbal cues section we played "simon says" to see that they could follow the directions.
Then we made a name tag that sits on their desk. One side was their name written in English which my co teacher and I helped them write it into english and then they wrote it on their name tag.
The other side of the name tag had the heading, "I Like" and they drew pictures of the things that they like, we helped to label in English what they drew.
They were instructed to put it into their book so we can use them each class so I can learn their names.

How many students do you have in each class? How many times a week do you see them?

Thank you for posting this. What level are you students?

I have an afterschool class with very low level 4th graders and I can tell communication is going to be difficult.  I tried to have them draw their likes and dislikes so I could get to know them, but they were having trouble understanding what I wanted from them.

Classroom Rules - 5 P's (with Korean)
« Reply #5 on: April 11, 2011, 01:40:16 PM »
Hope this is of some use. I printed it on a huge piece of cardboard and put it at the back of the class. I use these phrases in class and they can check the poster for the Korean meaning if they have forgotten the words in English.  ::)

I have no idea about my class rules, one co-teacher tends to go on 10min rants in Korean. I just stand there and smile, mouthing "It'll be okay" to the kids... That's probably 3 rules broken right there.

Not sure about your poll...I voted for 'notify me of smileys'.

Good job on the rules!  Rules are always good for children, and I think it's something that a teacher overlloks at their own peril!!  Nice one!

i have class rules but not all of them are followed, when my co teacher gets really angry, he'll stop the class and punish them as a whole or singles the ones out till the end of class. This is where my co teacher takes over and enforces the korean physical punishment, i hate it and usually turn around or leave the room till he is finished, theres nothing i can do as this was the system they used before i got there, however,

Some of my class rules are things like:
1. Raise your hand to ask&answer a question
2. Be quiet when teacher, or another classmate is speaking
3. No shouting
4. Must bring textbook, notebook and pencil to class
5. No Konglish

I have 2 point/sticker charts. One is for each class of each grades for during their lesson, and the other is for each grade as a whole. When they break these rules, i deduct points or stickers from both charts, this devastates them, bless them, but it works!!

I've recently introduced the rule that they may not have anything on their desk except their English Book, Pencil and Eraser.
Its helps prevent them from messing with lots of other items especially their noisy pencil cases.
Attached is the page I laminated and put on the board each class.

I've heard that some teachers enforce a no korea rule. My kids level of English is incredibly low. What is a realistic expectation I can have for them

When I introduced the idea of classroom rules to my co-teachers they seemed confused and not really into the idea. Have you spent a whole lesson discussing them or just a few minutes? I'm afraid to challenge the norms of my school too much.

My co-teacher has already set rules up for the students to follow, and as I much as I would like to know what they are, I haven't a clue. She has also already told me that I'm to lead the class for the year while she monitors... I suppose I'll be doing the exact same thing you are and just hope that I'm not insulting her in some way.

First off, here's a nifty class rules PPT I made that always gets a laugh out of the students. Nothing crazy, but pretty good for a first day. Can be used in camp or any English class on the first day.
