High School - Poetry

This originally included limericks, but these were a little too complicated for the students to fully comprehend. I stuck with just acrostic poetry instead. I began by explaining what an acrostic poem was and had them read the two examples on the handout (attached below). I then asked the classes to come up with topics for more acrostic poems (Soju, TVXQ, Mokpo, girls, Korea, kimchi, Jach, and beautiful were common words among all the classes). I then asked the students to come up with three poems and write them down. I'd walk around and pick the best 7-8 poems and have those poems written on the board. The class would then read each poem aloud. The girls liked them and had lots of fun with them and they were actually participating! Nice to see!

I put this together as my 'back to school' lesson for my Gr 1's. It's nothing mind blowing, but it hits all the bases I try to get with my students: Reading, writing, speaking, listening, creative thought.

I always begin my lessons with a quick "how are you?" free discussion, and this is particularly useful in this lesson because I haven't seen the students in 6 weeks. I tell them alittle bit about my trip to Canada and then I hand out the worksheets. I start with the Summer Cloze activity.
First, we read the list of words (summer vocabularly) in the box at the top of the sheet together as a class. Then I ask the students if there are any words they don't understand. For this sheet, words that needed more explanation were: "berries", "ice cubes", "mosquitoes", "juicy" and sometimes (believe it or not) "fans". There is always other students in the class who do know these words so I will ask the students to help me define the word on the board and I define any word that is shouted out from the list; chances is are if one kid is brave enough to bring it up, there are 10 that don't understand it.
Next, I read the through the article and the listen and fill in the words in the appropriate blank spaces. We then take up the answers together as a class and I often pause to ask short comprehension questions or to explain some confusing phrases like "cool off" and "make tasty treats for".
Then, we turn the page over to see the Diamante Poety sheet. In detail, I repeat the instructions on the sheet and give them lots of examples. The students are to create their own poem about a favorite summer activity or topic. If they're stuck for ideas, I encourage them to use a word from the vocabularly list on the previous page. You may want to change the instructions alittle bit, they have been confusing to the first couple of classes I tried this with, so I'm going to revamp it abit.

The timing has worked out like this (roughly):
Intro: 5 minutes
Cloze Sheet: 25 minutes
Diamante Poem: 20 minutes

I give my students stickers for completed sheets and display the best work in my classroom so they hand their sheets in to me at the end of class.

I got the cloze activity from bogglesworldesl . com (address is at the bottom of the worksheet) and I created the Diamante Poetry sheet from a couple of websites and my own tweeks, so I haven't referenced them. You can adjust the Poem to a higher or lower level by changing the directions. For higher levels you can tell the students to begin and end with opposites and they have to switch their topic in line 4 using a noun associated with both words. For lower level students, use a 5 line diamante with less words.

Here is a corrected version of the Diamante Poem worksheet. There was a significant error in the instructions, so please use this version instead of the one posted above.

I've done poetry with my high schoolers this year and last and they all seem to enjoy it. Though I'm afraid ot doing it too many times so I try to just do it once a year or so. But good idea! :D

These were part of a writing workshop that I did with my first graders.  Unfortunately the rest of the files were corrupted so I only have these two.

Hope someone can use them.

Hello.  I would really like to teach a poetry lesson for an advanced high school class.

I would love to open the class with some good videos from YouTube or just some random videos showcasing different kinds of poetry.

I was wondering if any of you have any favorite videos to share?  Upload them if you do.  Your help is very appreciated!

I would like to know everyones thoughts on attempting to do a lesson that would incorporate poetry writing in the class any thoughts? I think I could probably use it with a what do you like to do lesson but I don't think it would fit very well.

I have the following poetry writing activity the worked well.  The teacher is involved during the lesson by giving suggestions etc.  This is a poem students write to describe themselves.  Every line takes the form of a sentence starter and students fill in the gap. 
As teacher you can also show them an example of your own before students attempt the activity.  This will give more direction to the students on how to complete the poem.

Whoa! That is a great lesson, I will use it for sure. I have been trying to think of a way to get them to be poetic...but was afraid to leave them without a line...My students are used to being led though it all when it comes to writing.

This is a great idea. Good luck! I think helping them to be more expressive in writing might help break the fear they have to execute something perfectly the first time out, while still encouraging them to look up words and seek out how to say what they have in mind.

If they get the hang of it, concrete poetry could be really fun. Girls would love it.
