One Piece "Bomb" Game
« on: April 11, 2013, 06:29:28 PM »
I've been working on this forever on and off.

All my middle school students LOVE One Piece, so I decided to make a game for them.

I was trying to break away from the traditional bomb game where all the question templates are the same, so I spiced things up a little.

There are 5 areas, each with it's own type of question.

North Blue: multiple choice (5 questions)
East Blue: hidden picture (5 questions)
South Blue: fill in the blanks (5 questions)
West Blue: question/answer (5 questions)
Grand Line: unscramble competition (10 questions)
(choose a team to compete against, both teams try to unscramble faster, fastest gets the prize. Any teams that were getting bored waiting for their turn can wake up.)

I find it difficult sometimes when making a game from a template to think of so many different questions, this is why I made the template incorporate them. Of course you can change any of them if you want....

Other than that, it's pretty self explanatory. Go through NESW before the Grand Line, from the scoreboard make sure you click on either the compass (for the NESW screen) or the words "grand line" (for the grand line....)

Let me know if you find any bugs and I'll try to fix them :)

EDIT:
-Changed font to Tempus
-Added sound effects to rock/paper/scissors
-rock/paper/scissors now disappear on click, not auto fading.
-fixed link in South #2

One thing I also noticed while playing with my class is that it's very hard to tell  who is faster in the grand line battle (though they enjoyed having everyone yell out answers). So if your students are advanced maybe have only 1 student from each team speak.

Thank you! This looks great! My 6th graders will love this. Not too sure about my other grades (only 6th graders mentioned Luffy). Anyone else know which grades like One Piece?

Can't wait to try it out tomorrow!

One problem I'm experiencing is that the points keep resetting. I have this problem with other bomb games and so do other people where the animations reset if you visit more than 2 slides or something like that and go back to the scoreboard/choices slide. I heard there's no way of fixing that? And it only happens to certain versions of powerpoint? Anyone have a work around? =/

It has worked on both my powerpoint 2007 and 2003. But if you go BACKWARD from the scoreboard then they will reset. Everytime.
That is why the scoreboard is at beginning, so you always go back to it. If you accidentally press the back button then you're out of luck.

I hope that fixes it?

Powerpoint 2010 has the issues with everything resetting. Try opening 2 instances of the game at the same time, put both into full screen. use 'alt+tab' to change between the 2 full screen presentations, but never move one of them off of the scoreboard page. This should stop it from resetting. You could even erase all the other slides except for the scoreboard in the one presentation, might help everything run smoother.

lucky you guys with ppt2010 at your school! I'm stuck with 07 on my computer and 03 on my classroom one.
I didn't know that 2010 had such an annoying problem.

Good solution though Zeegs :)

Summer,

Let me know how the students enjoy it if you use it. I still haven't tried it when them.

Also, was it easy to fill in the slide templates?

Summer,

Let me know how the students enjoy it if you use it. I still haven't tried it when them.

Also, was it easy to fill in the slide templates?

I only use games for my after school classes (regular classes follow a textbook). I used this One Piece game for my grade 6 class only because it's filled with boys and one girl (she's a tomboy). My 4th grade class are all girls and the other grades don't know about One Piece (and it can be seen as inappropriate with the busty ladies and shirtless men...).

The boys were interested in the game immediately. They've mentioned One Piece before so i knew they would like it.

For the slides, I couldn't use the guess the picture ones or the multiple choice ones. I think my grade 6s are too smart for multiple choice. They have trouble with sentence structure but if they see a bunch of choices, they are able to see the correct one right away. It's only when they need to unscramble sentences/make their own sentences that it's a problem. The guess the picture one would be too easy for them too. I'd like to use some knew types of questions but my students only have trouble with some certain areas so the diversity of questions isn't needed. I guess that's a good thing that my students don't have trouble with a wide arrange of areas, though.

They really loved the rock, paper, scissors! They were.... hmmm... "awed"(?) by having to do RPS with a computer haha. But I think the hands appearing didn't have enough impact. Their reaction after was like, "oh.. we won... great..." Maybe if the hands appeared with a more "pow" animation and with sounds and instead of fading away, make it blink away or something? I think they were expecting something to happen as the hand was fading away and was unimpressed when nothing did. I will change this and see hopefully their reaction is more enthusiastic. And I may make them do best 2/3.
In some other games they have RPS against other teams but if team A loses they get angry at the team B. I think having the computer play with them is better because they can blame the computer and if a team loses, no one gets points whereas if they play against each other, they'll get angry at each other even more if one team gets points while the other doesn't.

I think they liked the Beli scoreboard because it was different from the other scoreboards in other games. The alt+tab trick worked perfectly, by the way! I added a hyperlink to the bomb game so it goes to the scoreboard powerpoint and then I alt+tab it back (I don't hyperlink the scoreboard in case I make new One Piece powerpoints for future lesson reviews).
But I think they still liked the other scoreboards better because they would always count along when I click up. For this scoreboard they just kind of stared. But I still think they liked it? Haha. Hope I'm making sense somehow.

In other games I make it so that the game has a "lose all points" possibility instead of a "your team loses all points". One team lost all their points today and they were REALLY angry when it was only them who lost all their points. But it wouldn't make sense in this game for all the teams to lose points due to the One Piece characters fighting against one team.

Other random things:
- The students told me the treasure chests are from Minecraft and they got a kick out of that, haha.
- They liked(???) Franky, hahahahaha. They tried to pose like him and made fun of his clothes. One kid called him "gay" though so I took off all his points for that comment =_=;;; Almost all of my students came back from the weekend with phrases like "gay bar" and "shuddup." Even my 2nd graders are saying "shuddup." I don't know where they all got this from and I've been trying to put a stop to it all week...
- For the font, when you have an apostrophe, there's a gap between the apostrophe and the next letter. It confused my students for a moment. If I were to use it with grade 4 and under, I think they some students would be confused (is the letter after the apostrophe a new word? Is it a weird mistake? etc.). Even though I'll only use it for the grade 6's, I'm just saying this in case some other teachers are considering changing the font.

My personal opinion:
I really like this game. It's extremely well made all around and the results (?) (I mean the RPS and fighting options) are creative and interesting. The animations are smooth and I like the scoreboard; it seems unique to me and again, it's well made.

Hopefully they'll want to play it again. They've been stuck on Pokemon for a long time. They just keep wanting to go back to it. I'm trying to make my own bomb games but I've never been able to finish one due to my workload this semester. I really appreciate you sharing this game with this forum!

(Sorry for the long post with perhaps some digression; but I felt I needed to explain some stuff based on the personalities of my students.)

Thanks. That is a good idea. I had a lot of trouble trying to figure out how to make the rock/paper/scissors. Having a sound could make it more exciting. Perhaps I could also make them dissappear on a click rather than fading.

I thought about putting a "lose all points" in there, but I decided against it. Though my students generally enjoy them. I prefer the switch points/lose a few points/steal  points ones. You can always change wording though so that it's all teams if it's better for you.

Other random things:
- The students told me the treasure chests are from Minecraft and they got a kick out of that, haha.

I didn't know the treasure boxes were from minecraft.  Haha, I just tried to find nice pictures online that didn't have annoying white backgrounds.

As for the font, I realised it made that apostrophe problem after I posted it. It's a Korean font. I guess I'll change it to an English one if I adjust some more things and upload. I found 1 fix though. You can use the "insert symbol" function and change it.
A few other Korean fonts have the same problem. I don't know why.

Thanks for the feedback/advice :) I'm still learning all the tricks for making ppts run smoothly.

One thing I noticed (and it was really easy to fix) is that the number 2 question for South Blue hyperlinks to the wrong slide.  It goes to slide number 26 (which is south blue #3) and it should go to slide number 25.

Otherwise it's brilliant and I'm using this game as midterm reviews for my high school and middle school students.  Starting tomorrow - I'll let you know how it goes!

I actually noticed that the other day when I was testing it on my 1st years. But completely forgot to fix it and repost. So thank you for reminding me. (and telling me which link was wrong as I forgot that too)

So I should be prepping but I decided to look at your game and I like it.

Just a few things about it:

I love the choice of sounds.
I like the coins splattering out of the chest.
The scoreboard is actually quite interesting.

I like the style you applied to it but it was a little difficult for me at first to grasp.

The scoreboard I totally copied from one of the halloween games that had pumpkins as scores, so credit to whoever made that for the idea. I also used a similar one for my Where's Waldo game. It is simple and works.

I also just fixed a few things, so you might want to download version 2.1 if you plan on using it with your students.

Okay, I've only played it with one class but I needed to come back and tell you - THIS GAME IS A MIRACLE WORKER!  The fact that it has all of the different kinds of questions had the kids really involved and for the first time I have literally EVERY SINGLE student active and alert and completely focused on English the ENTIRE period.  You know how hard that is to do during first period?

We didn't quite make it through all of the game, but about halfway through Grand Line if anyone was wondering.  I have low level students, but since they were in teams I gave them questions about a half a step above their level to push them and most of them were so into the competition part of the game that they didn't realize that they were working higher than they would normally in my class.

Thanks again, looking forward to this with the rest of my students.

Oh, and BTW - my students were completely baffled by the RPS game..."Teacher?  How computer beat me?!"

Oh, I laughed so hard.

I'm really glad it worked for you! I only get to try it out a few more times before I finish my contract next week.

(btw: if you get the new version and swap in the new RPS slide for the old one it should still work fine, but you'll get the sound effects and disappear on click rather than auto fade. That way you don't have to remake all your questions.)

I can't wait to use it for my next class!
