Going on a Treasure Hunt - Rhyme with Hand Motions
« on: April 30, 2013, 06:27:05 PM »
This is my first lesson plan to share! The main game is a board game I made and printed on A3 paper. The lesson is based on a rhyme I knew when I was in middle school. You do it with hand motions on a friend's back. My Middle School girls are so physical, I thought they would enjoy the opportunity to beat each other up... :)

You can make a copy of my Prezi and edit it to your needs! Check this out to see the vocab and the video used to teach the content.

Lesson: Going on a Treasure Hunt
Materials needed:
18 board games. (Attacked and printable on A3 paper)
36 board pieces. (Something for each girl to use with board game.)
   6-18 dice.
   Fill in the blank sheet.

Students will...
1.Learn new words from the Treasure Hunt rhyme.
2.Be able to read the rhyme with hand gestures.

1. Welcome and Review (5 minutes)
Welcome! What did you do last weekend? Last weekend I... ran in a marathon
When I was in Middle School, what do you think I was like?
Show pictures from my middle school years.

2. Warm up and Presentation (5 minutes) -
You will have to learn the rhyme to do this. Check out the Prezi to watch the video with hand motions...
Call up a volunteer and recite rhyme to her with hand motions on her back:
Going on a treasure hunt
X marks the spot.
Four big boulders.
And one tiny dot.
Spiders crawling up your back.
Snakes slithering around your neck.
Tight squeeze.
Cool breeze.
Now you’ve got the shiveries.

After showing the rhyme, teach each words/phrase with pictures. (This is in the Prezi.)

3. Practice (10 minutes) - Leave Prezi slide up that has the whole rhyme, then move to video.
1. Say and repeat the entire rhyme, line by line, showing hand motions.
2. Watch video of Kevin. (My husband--the girls are riveted when he is in the lesson...)
3. Watch video of Kevin and Fill in the Blank (1-2 times)
3. Watch and repeat Kevin, and again with hand motions.
4. Get in a big circle and practice on one another. (First turn left, repeat after me. Then turn around, repeat after me...)

4. Production (15 minutes)
Play board game in pairs or as a group at table to reach treasure first.
Roll dice, move piece. Say what you land on. Do what you say.
You can only do it if you say it first!
If finished, do a word search.

5. Wrap-up and Take-away (5 minutes)
Say rhyme together one more time.
