For anyone who has the same new textbooks for 3rd grade as I do, I've made a short guessing game for the students with the new characters.  I know the pictures are a bit stretched out, but it works.

I took the ppt that moc-moc-a-moc! (Thank you, btw!) made for the 4th Grade lesson, My name is Minho, and I adapted it for I'm Bobo! I hope it helps as it's my first attempt at doing powerpoints, even if it is ripping someone else off!

Just in case you couldn't find it on the CD, here is the English lesson plan for lesson 1.

"What's ACB?"

All letters of the alphabet with a common English name

I had them tell me the name of the letter, the sound it makes, and then I told them the name and had them repeat it and put it in the sentence "Hi, i'm____".

Next, I did slap game with ABC cards (Capital letters)

"Hi, i'm adam-a, a, -adam"...what leter was that? and I wrote it on the board.

(if you make the cards, make sure the front and backside line up correctly)

Thanks for the powerpoint. Don't know if anybody else feels this way--but 4 lessons on "Hi I'm 000" and "Bye"? How will I ever come up with enough games for that? I thought I'd post two ideas for anyone else on that boat.

I played a version of pass the paper (or in  my classroom, Pass the monkey). Which, because they are so young, they really loved. However, I am really grateful from this powerpoint. I changed the slides a little and we will play 'Heads up, 7 Up' in class on Monday. The difference? Printed cards with the main characters are given to each of the thumb pushers. (Thus the use of these printed ppt slides.)

For those who've never played 'Heads Up, Seven Up' here are the instructions.
1. The teacher selects 4-5 good students from the class (7 is too many to handle efficiently with 30 3rd graders) and gives them a character card. (Bobo, Kevin, etc.)
2. The teacher calls, 'Heads down thumbs up.'
3. The rest of the students cover their eyes and hold out a hand with their thumb up.
4. The students with character cards walk around the classroom and press ONE THUMB EACH.
5. They then return to the front of the classroom.
6. The teacher calls 'Heads up."
7. Each student whose thumb went down stands.
8. The teacher asks each student 'Who did it?'
9. The student guesses the character who pushed their thumb by saying 'Hi, 000.' (or an additional target phrase).
10. If they are right, the guesser and the guessee change spots. (Everyone in class says 'Bye 000.')
11. If the student is wrong, the guesser sits down. Every student standing has one chance to guess.
12. Once everyone has guessed, a new round starts. Play until you feel like stopping.

If you have a big class (like I do), I like to give more children an opportunity to stand. So any thumb pushers who are standing at the end of the round, I give candy. And select new people to replace them before starting the new round. Theoretically each child should get a turn.

Works well for phonics, reading, and route blocks of memorization. It sounds difficult to explain, but alot of acting helps. Also, after one or two rounds, even the clueless students get the hang of it. It's been a success in every class (and ability level) I've tried it in.

Teach more.  Your students need a lot of practice speaking, so focus your games on having them say the target sentences as often as possible, but feel free to mix in other things.  (It's recommended that we not teach phonics or ABC until mid-year, but your kids might already be beyond that.  If they are, build on their current level.)  My students have learned to count to six, four colors, "look," "listen," and "yes" and "no."  The first unit focuses a lot on being able to identify the characters in the book, so we've practiced those names a lot, too.

I have to restrain myself from calling the weird little guy Babo. Never mind the fact that his name is almost a homophone for 'kiss'.

There's a second thread on this topic over here which should probably get merged:  http://waygook.org/index.php/topic,5400.0.html

Here's a "guess the picture" game I've made specifically for this unit using tchr227's images and some other characters students know, like Santa and Pororo.

I make it a point to instruct Phonics for all the grade levels I teach...Phonics/Pronunciation. It's the perfect time for their mouth muscles to learn the /f/ sound and other tricky components of the English language.

Anyway, Here are the PPT's I've used thus far for Grade 3 - Hi, I'm Bobo

For an explanation of how I go about teaching the letter and sounds there should be a link in my 'signature' box which will guide you to the appropriate discussion. If it's not clear enough, send me a PM. It can really be loads of fun, I'm pretty sure this is my Students favorite part of every lesson - so give it a whirl and let me know if you have questions.

(P.S. I work at too schools, so the title of the slides may not be Hi I'm Bobo, but I used it anyway...just change it around)

also, I think I found this song in a 4th grade thread but I'm using it for 3rd grade so I figured I'd repost here. My students really enjoyed learning how to say hello in other langauges. Happy Teaching!

Here's a powerpoint on Greetings from around the world. Probably too much for a 3rd grade class but I think it'll do them some good anyway.

This is the first powerpoint that I've ever made, so I apologise in advance for its potential deemed crappiness. :-[

I don't have bobo - I have Ottie the otter - which I am starting to think I am the only school that has a little otter - I don't think my co-t likes aliens...she's a bit of a realist, that being said -

I have created a hot potato game with a ball - I don't have a lot of kids in my classes, my school is small - so max 16 kids and min is 9.

My co-t thinks we all rely on powerpoint too much so - I have resorted to old camp fire games I taught when I was teaching in after school programs in the U.S.

Hello hot potato game - Find the song Make new friends on youtube.  You can turn it into a sentence game. Which I do also in different classes, it gets the kids moving and using physical activity to memorize words and phrases...great for your kinesthetic learners.

Circle make new friends game.
Like hot potato, kids have to pass it and say the name of themselves, then the name of the person they passed it to, the next kid says the first person who started the game, the person who passed it, and their name, and the person they pass the "potato" to.

This game tests memory, yours and the kids. It can be a lot of fun, don't just let them pass the "potato" in a circle, have them toss it to each other randomly. Makes it a lot more fun and challenging. Plus you get to know your kids names and they get to know you better.

Worksheet: Picture Match

This worksheet was derived from another blog's PPT. My students enjoyed it because they could recognized the characters.
Afterwards, you can make them say the sentences while imitating the voice of the characters.
