Grade 4 Lesson 1 - My name is Minho
« on: February 21, 2011, 01:50:10 pm »
Nice to meet you! Presentation. Includes the Nice To Meet You Youtube video link. Attached is a worksheet for the students to fill out, and Slap! words for the slap game.

For a big class, this is how I play the slap game:
Two teams. One student comes up from each team. Class asks teacher, "How's the weather?" Teacher replies: It's ______. The two students race to slap the word. For 3 points, they tell the teacher a sentence. And so on down the line. Less chaotic since students don't have to leave their seats. To make more difficult, say two weather expressions at a time.

I'm using the 천재교육 grades 3 and 4 books by Frances Sohn. They have pictures of the world on the front. So far they seem... workable. Although after 2 years of hagwon work I'm very much used to something like Let's Go.

I'm using this book as well. Here's a PPT I threw together for Period 1.

Someone please let me know if I need to fold this into a separate or preexisting thread.

Here is some material for this extremely basic and tedious lesson!  I included a long explanation about why "nice to meet you" should only ever be used once and a game about different greetings at different times of day.

Thanks for this. The "Nice to meet you" with Jim and Bob is really cute. I posted some things for this book under the 4th grade index, but I'm not really sure where it's supposed to go.

Me too.  My co-teacher asked me to find a new song for the first lesson "My Name is Minho."  Anyone have a brilliant resource??  With the new books, it seems really difficult to find useful materials to supplement the text book.

Maybe a mod out there can link this to the 4th Grade Index under the correct text book? I'm not sure where to look for stuff either. I wanted to check under some of the old textbook stuff, but this lesson seems like it doesn't fall well under any of the others.

Thanks moc-a for the great ppts!

I used this and most of the kids seemed amused by it. It also gave me an opportunity to walk around the room while we all sang Hello hello what's your name? and I pointed at someone who had to say My name's ........

@kmvictory713 and Paju Leigh, the book seems boring and not very well thought out. To go from "Hello, my name is..." to prepositions in chapter two is silly. Where is the connection? The first week may be difficult, but hopefully soon there will be a dedicated thread to our book so we can all share ideas and materials.

Here is a powerpoint I threw together.
Quite simple, Hello my name is__________
They read the sentence with the name of the person in the pic. ex. Hello my name is G-Dragon.
I have no idea what the names of the kpop stars are, but I am sure the kiddies will!!

moc-moc-a-moc!, I hope you don't mind, but I thought the first ppt was cracking, so I took it and adapted it for the 3rd Grade lesson, I'm Bobo. It can be seen at http://waygook.org/index.php/topic,5468.msg34926/topicseen.html#new

If I'm unjustifiably ripping you off, please let me know and I'd happy to take it down. Cheers

Treasure Hunting Match Game

Introduce names "Hi i'm _______" or "His name is _______" and tell students to remember their name and face.

Play the memory game and if they get a match, they must make the sentence/remember the correct name.

(if they are like my students, they will do MUCH beter the 2nd round)

Don't forget to tell them they can't write or some will have an unfair advantage.

No worries, I'll contact you with my bank details and we can settle on a sum in private.

Seriously though, I decided the sentence scramble part was a bit too difficult even for my 4th graders so I changed it to just mix the words around, I'd consider making it at least that much easier for third graders unless they're extremely advanced.

Glad you found it helpful!
