Starcraft bomb game (It’s about time!)
« on: March 11, 2011, 09:52:13 AM »
UPDATED 4/8/11 (Changed the Rush feature, and hopefully fixed the bugged sound clip.)

Here is a new version of the iconic bomb game. I decided to make a Starcraft version since it seems to be pretty popular here. I’ll be honest; I too am a fan! It works in a very similar fashion to the other bomb games, but uses “minerals” instead of points. It should be fairly straight forward if you read the “Rules” slides, but if you have any questions – feel free to ask!  After you click the answer part of the slide, just one more click will retrieve the “reward” and the effects should all be automatic. So don’t over click!

I started this project during a desk warming venture with little interference aside from my own laziness. After I began this project, our cities MOE decided to filter our internet. Almost every Starcraft site was blocked for me, so as you can imagine this proved difficult. I used proxy sites, but those too became blocked. This hampered many things including my sound selection (until I found this unblocked nugget http://wavs.unclebubby.com/starcraft/), so if someone has a good Zerg rush (zerglings of course!) sound file -- that would be awesome. Feel free to edit this in any manner you see fit. I hope this will get the kids excited to participate (As this is my entire goal). Enjoy!

So without further adieu,

Also, if you happen to be good with some technical things, I thought it would be cool to add some music to the first slide to make it a more “themed” bomb game. Ideally using a small portion of a score like this which is actually an amazing track composed for a game.

p.s. If you’re a mega SC fan you’ll notice a few differences. One such difference being the wraith sound for stimpack, but I thought it was fitting.

WOW!!!  Thank you--this is awesome.  I start teaching night classes at my all-boys' high school next week.  Since I know nothing about Starcraft, I think I'll let them write questions for the game!  ;D  Truly amazing PPT!

Hm. This is weird - it won't open on my PPT, even the .ppt, not the .pptx, and when I open it with OpenOffice, it loses almost all of its functionality.

Anyone else have this? It looks rad, but it's not working for me~

I know nothing about StarCraft but I will def use this. Is the second Pic supposed to have sound? Because it doens't

Yes it is, I even edited the sound to be school appropriate. I tried uploading it separate, but this forum doesn't accept wma files. I'll try to take care of that later.

The forum accepts .zip and .rar files if you know how to put it inside those. Alternatively you could convert it to a .wav so it could be embedded in the PPT itself, if you know how.

Also, not specific to this, but I'm a bomb game newbie.

If the team answers correctly, they get the minerals, right? If they answer wrong, they get nothing? I think I get that.

So... for Infested and Nuke, if they students get it wrong, they get that, and if they get it right, they just avoid it and stay at the same point level?

The way I play is to let a team choose their question, get an answer out of them (or the class if they won't speak), then give them whatever the slide offers.  My students love the unpredictability of the game more than anything, so a team always gets their due from a slide whether they answer correctly or not.

I am new to the bomb game. Could someone provide brief instructions just to make sure the newbies aren't  missing anything!?!

Thanks in advance :)

Similar to Aadi, I too let the students choose the number, and then give them a fair amount of time to answer. If they don't, I usually let another team "steal" the question, or I give them a hint! So I award the minerals accordingly.

I don't let the kids avoid the "reward/consequences" of the slides. I make sure that some how the slide is answered haha!

Can I just say that you're awesome for, not only making this, but being thoughtful enough to provide it in ppt AND pptx formats. :D

I am new to the bomb game. Could someone provide brief instructions just to make sure the newbies aren't  missing anything!?!

Thanks in advance :)

I'll try to be succinct:
Go through the PowerPoint normally. Read the rules slides, and go over them with the students. I designed this game to have 2 or 3 teams (Starcraft races). In other bomb games, you can usually split teams however you like. The next important thing is to go to the slide with the Questions. Usually it will be some sort of letter, number, picture, etc slide. In this particular ppt, they are pylons. The first question slide has 20 different questions, they are all linked to the pylons. At the bottom of each linked slide there is a Home button which brings you back to the main 20 question slide.

Once you are at the question slide have the first group choose a number, and then (you) ask the question (or read it together). Once they answer, click the slide again and it will have a "random" reward/consequence. The goal is to have the most points (minerals in this case).

That's pretty much it. I would check out some of the other completed bomb games for a better idea. Mine is a little different from the norm, but its fairly straight forward once you know how the Bomb game works.

Best of luck, and let me know if you need anymore help!

A friend of mine on Facebook suggested I give him a video to explain what Starcraft is. I found a video, by a pretty experienced Starcraft player from the States. Its very basic, and introduces the game in general. It goes pretty in depth, and I figured I'd post it on here too!

Also, on a side note; I'll be going to a live Starcraft match in Seoul this Saturday! I'm pretty stoked haha!

Here's the vid:
