SCATTEGORIES
« Reply #6 on: November 29, 2012, 04:49:40 PM »
Here is a version of Scattegories...

I divide the class by having them count off 1-8 or 1-6 depending on the size. This way the groups are mixed (or else all the best speakers tend to be in one group.) That is also their team name. i.e. Team number 3 (they waste too much time coming up with names.)

I give them 10 blank lists and mark them beforehand with the team number ...makes it easier to keep track.

I also have a timer on the screen while they are playing.

I count up the responses during the following round-and award points accordingly. I usually share good/bad/interesting answers with the entire class too.

It's fun and takes up the entire 50 minute class period. Depending on the class we get through all 10 rounds ...less or more. Less with the first graders as I give them 3 minutes per category instead of 2.

Feel free to change or add categories- or responses. For example I included alcohols in the "Things you can drink" category ... I tend to accept answers that are at least related- and I don't care about spelling except for obvious mistakes like switching the p/f in the initial position of works... pish for fish.

The winning team gets candy- it motivates them to compete and try their best but if you don't want to...just remember to take that piece out of the powerpoint.

hey aleksys
this looks awesome, cheers!
how many sheets do you print off altogether?
thinking of playing this without the teams as my co-teacher frowns upon group work.

not relishing the prospect of printing off like 180 pages per class though...
My first day I watched a few lessons and had my first class which was a Grade 2 class or something like that. I thought every things was great until a kid ddong-chimmed me.

Individually might be difficult I suggest giving them 3 minutes...

When I do groups of 5/6 they name about 12-20 items in 2 minutes and that's really team effort.

I'm not sure how many copies I make- I usually estimate. But if I have 5 groups thats 25 front and back copies, (5 front and back lists, for a total of 10 lists)

I always copy front and back and cut the paper down the middle.

Hope this makes sense.

Thanks so much for the power point. I have been looking for a simplified version of this game to use with my classes for a while now.

I made some changes to the worksheet though to cut down on the amount you will have to print. Hope this helps some.
