Lesson 1 Period 5 is a story section. It has a few lines of material that isn't really a story. What activity can I we do that isn't just them redoing the activities already in the book? Thanks for any help.

I plan on skipping it, or finding an alternative. It's rubbish!
And Washing Machine Part 2,3 and 4 and in the next 3 units also!!!

My CT had me type up all 16 of the stories and make fill in the blanks for each chapter... It's not that great, but maybe you could use it... There are three different levels.. I think we're gonna do it like a pre-reading activity. I'll read them the story two or three times before they open their books and they'll fill in the blanks. Then I think we're gonna read the story and do that book activities... Not that exciting, but you can use it if you want.. :)

I also attached a doc that has all the stories typed up, if anyone wants it..

Not sure where to post this, but it's for one of the review lessons before the regular units of the new Grade 6 book start. Lesson 5 of the review units is an optional story time thing and my co-teacher asked me to make a more interesting powerpoint story, so I made a Simpsons ppt story using the same sentences in the book.

My co-teacher likes the story time, but leaves it up to me to write the lesson plan... as long as I use the story : (

Here are some materials that I used. There is an information gap worksheet for lesson 1. That worked pretty well.

For the lesson 2 we wrote our own washing machine story. I gave each group of 4 or 5 students a different Washing Machine Picture and told them to write a story about it. The pictures I used are in the attached ppt. I printed out each picture and gave a different one to each group. When it was there turn to read their story to the class I showed the ppt of the pictures. The whole thing took about 20 minutes.

Can be good for 5th or 6th grade.

I created a role play dialog using the first three washing machine stories. It includes four parts (narrator, boy, washing machine, dad). Most of the sentences come right out of the book's stories, so it should be easy for the kids to remember.

Initially I struggled with the dreaded "washing machine" story, but eventually I came up with a lesson that worked quite well much to my surprise!

I started out by reading the story out loud to my class with funny body movements for the words "washing machine", "dirty clothes", "soccer", "Hurray", "dirty" and "Good job!" As I read, I did a certain movement to denote these specific words. I made it wacky and fun and the kids loved it. After I read it once or twice (depending on the class), I followed it up with questions to check their intial comprehension of the story. Marshmellows might have induced some of their motivation to answer the questions:-)

Next, I had the whole class stand up and read the story out loud and together with the accompanying body motions. I started with the first line and went from there. I would have the students read the lines several times so as to ensure that EVERYONE was reading out loud and hopefully remembering it. Also, they have a ton of fun acting out the words!

Next, I made a comprehension worksheet with true/false questions, multiple choice, and fill-in-the-blank questions. I gave them a few minutes for that. Once they were finished, pairs of students changed papers and graded each other as I went over the answers.

Lastly, after assessing which students were and were not grasping the story (based on the amount of correct answers on their worksheet), my co-teacher and I divided the class. She pulled the weak students aside and went over the story in more detail and maybe with a bit more translation. I gave the stronger students individual sentences of the story script, which they had to put in the correct order. Once they were done with that, I had a speed reading competition of the script. They loved that as well. Competition rarely fails!

One more thing..

I'm not taking credit for this riddle, but I did want to share it as it really captured the attention of my students in the beginning of my class and set the pace for the washing machine story....

I have a big mouth and I am a little loud. I'm not a gossip, but I get involved in everyone's dirty business. What am I?????

My two co-teachers and I have decided that the storytime material/story, is absolutely ludicrous. As if the kids would be interested in reading about a washing machine. We decided to find an alternative and hope the kids respond to it positively. We found stories like 'There was an old lady who swallowed a fly', created Key Expressions ppts and modified the most visually stimulating games we could find on Waygook so as to try to capture the children's attention. This type of story has repeated key sentences and helps them to memorize new vocabulary whilst also having some fun. This story in particular, also has a video on Youtube which goes well with the PPT and game for a full period of teaching. Please find attached a PPT and a modified Mario game, I originally found on Waygook.
Hope this helps some people fill up a storytime lesson.

This section of each lesson is terrible! However, my CT insist I teach it. I have been pretty much following the lessons exactly out of the book but I feel terrible for my students :( Any fun activities that use the vocab from this section would be much appreciated.

Also, loved the washing machine joke. Maybe it will lift my students spirits before I have to crush them by reading another lame washing machine story.

So this might be a little late for some but I made up this alternative to the 6th grade period 5 stories about laundry ugh. I had the kids watch the first 10 min. of Captain Planet episode one (meeting the kids from africa, asia, etc) for Lesson 1 Period 5. I used the following powerpoint to introduce the characters and read the story.

WASHING MACHINE THREE FILL IN THE BLANK AND BINGO

Here is a simple fill in the blank for the third washing machine story.
I also created a 4X4 grid with sentances or words from the story and we played BINGO with that.
Students get bingo chips and choose onle line on the card you make and then you read the sentances and the students turn the chips over. First one to get a line is the winner.

This worksheet is for the old lady who swallowed a fly. The students will draw and write a sentence about what would happen if they swallowed something. I put on the board I swallowed a __________ and I think I will __________. I teach low level students.
