Speed Game for post-exam lazy/tired students
« on: July 08, 2013, 01:44:44 PM »
Here's a PPT Speed Game/Hot Seat Game I just made. I like to do these after exams and/or the final weeks of a semester. They're simple, but I spend a good amount of time making them so they look nice. I took the example question from another Hot Seat game (it looked nicer than mine). I just split the class into 4-5 teams and have them take turns playing 2 minute rounds. Each team usually gets 2-3 chances. During their turn, the whole team comes up to the front. 2 students sit in chair with their backs to the screen while their team-mates try to make them guess the word. Once one of them gets the correct answer, they both get up and 2 new people sit down (they will continue to rotate after each answer). I let them pass 3 times/round. If they pass again, I deduct points. If they break the rules they get a strike. After 2 strikes, it's -1 point/further mistake. The kids always love it and really get into it. I have used it tons of times with Middle and High school, as have many of you. I try to make a totally fresh one every semester/year. There should be plenty to last you more than the classtime so you can play till the bell. Enjoy!

This worked really well for my middle school students! Perfect for the post-exams zombie stage.  ;D

Thanks for this. Speaking from experience, I know the most tedious part of making games like this is sourcing images, so I know this must have taken ages.

The first thing I did was go through this to see if would last 50 minutes - and I can pretty safely say that it will.  ;D
Thanks bsweet, great post and great effort.

I like using high-res photos for my speed game pictures too so I'm glad someone else shares my meticulosity.

Brilliant job, lovely presented ppt.

It's like taboo but more visual which is handy for bored kids

How has everyone been awarding points for this game? 1 point for each correct answer?

Awesome Speed Game! I made my own version using your template so my students could play again (note: a few of the slides are quite particular to my interests and stuff I've covered with my students this term, but 95% of it should be transferable).

My students gave me the idea to break up the game into three different rounds.
Round 1: Can only use English
Round 2: Can only use Motion (Charades)
Round 3: Can use both English and Motion

If anyone feels as they do more classes the lesson begins to get stale, I think this will at least give them a little variation to keep the game fun after what the 5th time 10th time or however many times you use it.

Thank you so much for this godsend!! I played today with my boys and it was an absolute hit!! from beginning to end, even the most lethargic of the bunch were into it.

such a simple set up, but so engaging on every level. Helps with their speaking, listening, and vocab; I never knew that my students knew how to construct proper sentences.

Thanks again OP.  Please, If any of you know some more activities or lessons that are as great as this please post a link or description.

Along with this activity, I would like to suggest the following:

http://www.waygook.org/index.php/topic,75921.0.html

http://www.waygook.org/index.php/topic,2365.20.html

http://www.waygook.org/index.php/topic,55534.msg380409.html#msg380409

All of the above are guaranteed, tried and true hits that have gone over well with every single one of my classes.  For the "world quiz" lesson I have uploaded my version which just changed a couple of images and added some other sounds that are not the PPT stock sounds.

and for the "Icomania" lesson, I suggest downloading the version from "noeym87" because it has a great layout, and is very similar to how the actual phone game looks and plays.

Thanks again for the material, and keep it coming!
