Good Movies for Middle School
« on: July 12, 2013, 03:36:20 PM »
I thought we should have a thread on movies you have shown which the students enjoyed.

Here are a couple that went over well for me.

The Karate Kid (original)
Cool Runnings
A Bug's Life

I showed Spirited Away this week with all of my middle school classes (1st-3rd grade). they are all mixed-gender classes.

it seemed to go down an absolute storm with all grade levels, both boys and girls as well. i hadn't seen it for ages and it's one of my favourite movies too, so it was personally nice to see it again as well  8)

My students were dying to watch Iron Man 3. I think someone brought in a USB with a pirated copy. Bad downloaders . . .  :P

But, we played a K-pop Slam instead.

Mr. Bean is always good. You can find full 25 minute episodes to eat up half a class.

My middle school students absolutely loved The Goonies.

You can easily find the Korean subtitles for it!

My kids enjoyed the newest Tron movie, Hocus Pocus and Johnny English 1 and 2. My mental co-ts showed them Zombie Land which of course they went nuts for, personally I think that's too old for them  :undecided:

I teach at an all girls school. They loved the Following movies :

Cinderella Story
She's the man

I usually tie in vocabulary with the movie and it seems to go over really really really well. No students sleep in the class.

To get subtitles, just type in the title of the movie and "자막." That should get you a .smi file. If that doesn't work, write the title in Korean (you don't need to translate, just put it in the alphabet). That should work for most things. You can usually get a cineast link, but I think you need to sign up with the site now. That isn't too hard though.

As for movies, my kids liked Sandlot a lot and they hated Princess Bride.

Hey guys, so I'm doing a pirate themed summer camp. I have my kids making pirate hats and doing treasure hunts etc. I just need to download Pirates of the Caribbean with Korean subtitles from somewhere. Any ideas the best way of doing this? or even better does anyone have the necessary files already? Cheers.

Download the movie.  Google search for the subtitles and download them.  Put them in the same folder with the same name.  Use GOM Player and when you open the movie the subtitles should start without anything else from you.  If they don't literally drop and drag the subtitle file onto the movie image.

Are you guys just letting them watch the whole movie? or do you pause it and do a worksheet as you go?

At my school showing movies (anything more than a short youtube clip or music video) is banned for ALL teachers. It is gonna make it hard at the end of the year.
