Elementary School St. Patty's Day
« on: March 16, 2011, 01:21:57 PM »
I was looking for a PPT that would be good for the younger kids for St. Patrick's Day, but I didn't see anything.  I made one up for tomorrow.  There aren't a lot of words, mainly pictures.  Most of it should be pretty self explanatory.  I included a lot of pictures from the Savannah, GA celebration because it is closest to me.  I hope it's helpful!

Pardon my ignorance, but what is the story with St. Patrick and the snakes? The powerpoint is awesome, nice, simple with questions at the end. I just never heard the legend behind the holiday. Educate me please! :)

Here's another PPT with a little bit of different information and some key words/phrases (my co is really into it having something, anything! they can repeat after the lesson is over...)

« Reply #5 on: March 17, 2011, 07:16:32 AM »
I found a PPT on here for higher levels and decided to alter it a bit for my 5th grade lessons today. (Here's the link to the other version http://waygook.org/index.php/topic,5515.0.html)

I know it's a bit late, but thought maybe some of you could use this today.

As I understand it, St Patrick's Day commerates the death of Saint Patrick. He was one of the primary cources for the establishment of Christianity in Ireland. He helped ablosih the remenants of the religion (Celtic Druids) that was previously there. The snakes refer to part of that religion. Better details about the history of St Patrick's day can be found all over the web (far out classing my knowledge and explanations).

Yes, you pretty much have it. The snakes are a metaphor for Paganism in Ireland. St. Patrick driving the snakes out refers to how he converted or made outcasts of Pagans and their belief system at the time.

The Leprechauns were his hench men....

The snakes were used as a metaphor for pagans. He converted a lot of pagans to Christianity after being a scholar in England. Therefore he got rif of all of them. To this day my Irish mates still say that there are no snakes in Ireland!!

Teaching holidays!
« Reply #12 on: April 11, 2011, 10:42:38 AM »
I love teaching my students about American holidays! It's always a fun topic for a day, and the kids have a lot of fun learning about holidays from different countries. I wanted to post the powerpoint I created to celebrate St. Patrick's Day! We played trivia and spelling games afterwards so the students could win prizes/candy, they really enjoyed it. Feel free to post any other powerpoints/games/ideas related to teaching holidays from around the world! It's great teaching the kids about culture too :)

St. Patrick's Day/Ireland

Here are some materials I used to Introduce Irish culture during a Hermes Camp. There is enough material to last a low level class for 80 minutes. I did a shorter version in my school for St. Patrick's day last March. The students favourite part was making the badge and they wore them for a few days.

This is for higher level students. It's the story of Finn Mac Cool and the Giants Causeway.

Step 1: Teacher reads the ppt story to the students. (maybe students need to listen twice or read it after the teacher finishes)

Step 2: Answer the multiple choice quiz questions.

Step 3: Students put the story strips in the correct order. When all students are finished they read the story together and check there answer.

Step 4: What happens next, students make up an after story.

Looking forward to photoshopping a lot of KPop stars (and Justin Beiber) for that matter in Green so that they understand what everyone is doing. Maybe some green inspired classroom games, a little biography or storybook on St Pattys will work wonders.

St Patrick's Day 2012...what are your lesson ideas?
« Reply #17 on: March 14, 2012, 02:52:10 PM »
Of course, the day before beginning lessons on the subject, I start scouring the Internet for St Paddy's day ppts and activities. I thought I'd try to help you out and see what else is out there!

I'm teaching Grade 6, Intermediate level kids. I think my lesson can work for Grades 3-5 as well.

First, I'm showing them a subbed video of the St Paddy's Special Annoying Orange since they love it.

Then I'm going to review St Paddy's Day with the .ppt attached.

After, I've got some Bingo sheets (that I downloaded from here) that I'll first review with the "Bingo" ppt. My coteacher and I decided that it would be best to let them cut/paste them to a new board to make them original. In the ppt, I scrambled the pictures three times (of all pictures) to give the kids more chances. You can obviously play without the ppt, but I want to teach them new words.

I'd love to see your ideas!

Thanks for the annoying orange clip! My grade 5/6s are so obsessed with that orange!

We made shamrocks where they wrote their wishes and then made some leprachun hats.
Also gave them mazes and wordsearch worksheets~
