Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Summer Camp

Hi everybody!
This is my summer camp for this year, based off Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Everything is included, including resources, a timetable and filler activities. I'd love for someone to look it over and tell me what they think about it. Anything I should remove or add, what have yous.
Thanks in advance and I hope someone can pull use from the hard work!
EDIT: I'd really appreciate some actual feedback...

Hi there,
Wow!!! You really did put lots of thought into this camp. I really like the innovative idea.
I found that my students like other stimulation such as visual or audio. If you added a ppt or a video clip or BOTH it will be a phenomenal camp.

Oh yeah, every morning when we start we'll be watching a few relevant clips from the movie in order to contextualise what they'll be reading! Then read a short part of the corresponding text, then the day's activity/exercise.
The credit from the camp and the booklet is used for their university applications, my kids don't write the national tests, so it has to be a bit more academically focused than a lot of other camps.
Thanks for the response, really appreciate it!

This looks AMAZING! I'm teaching Diary of a Wimpy Kid this camp... and my kids are hating it! They're not so academically minded, but my co-teacher is making us do it. She wants them to study Matilda in Winter, so I may use your lesson plan as an outline.
Great job! Seriously! But you're teaching this to high school? I'm teaching to Middle school, and the students struggle.
Do you have any tips for teaching reading camps?

Just going to start on my Matilda Winter Camp for this year. It will be much the same structure hopefully.
To contextualise what I didn't before, my kids are pretty darn low-level for High Schoolers. I had to hold their hand every step of the way. It was really great though as much as they did struggle. Once they start to understand exactly what it is that is expected of them it definitely gets easier. And of course, it was a lovely opportunity to get to know them better.
Really looking forward to get started on this winter camp package and I will post here when it is done!

How did you get that many books for the students?

I was promised at the beginning of the camp that students would buy their own books (the book retails for about W 4000). Most of them didn't so I ended up photocopying the relevant pages for the next day every day after camp, sorting them and stapling them together. No fun at all.
See if your school has it in the budget to buy the books? I had about 40 students and even with that number I don't think it is unrealistic to spend 4000 a head on them!

Sorry, One more question. Did you read the entire book with the class or just go over the parts you included in the worksheets?

No problem!
So basically every day I would show them a few clips that were relevant to the bits that we would be covering in so called "intensive reading" part. Then I would ask them some concept check questions and make sure that they understand what's happened in the clips we watched today and ask them some questions about what happened yesterday to who ("Who fell into the chocolate river? How did this happen? Why is that a bad thing? And what happens to him next? Do you think he will be okay, what could happen to him in the pipe?").
It's hand-holding, for sure, and I officially know more about the book and film than I ever wanted to, but it was a really successful camp.
Are you planing on using it? Please ask any questions!

You did a great job with this, thank you so much! There are some really good ideas in here that I imagine would go over really well with the students. I'm sure your lessons were a hit with your kids.

I enjoyed teaching the Summer Camp immensely and it brought me a lot closer to the kids in those classes.
Here is a link to the Winter Camp, this time on 'Matilda'. Please let me know what you think of it, I have a bit over a week to fix or change anything!

Nope. If you look through the uploaded file, that is really all that is needed.

I am using Lidija's template this year (2014) for the students at summer camp.
I am making some slight modifications, of course, but the general structure will remain. I am also incorporating my Candy Land game (
www.waygook.org/index.php/topic,76414.0.html
) into the schedule, as it has a lot of Chocolate Factory multimedia! I will report the turnout expeditiously!
Wish me luck!

I did this last year and it worked out pretty well.
I did phonics at the beginning of each day which took up about 40 minutes because my kids were lower level. I used Englishforeveryone.org I had them write sentences for A, B, and C, then did phonics. the next day D, E,F etc. It's a time filler and they are also learning something...

Hi Bort,
Yeah, I think I'm going to have to make some changes to the lesson plan and play up to the advanced level that my students are working from.
EnglishForEveryone has been a godsend, and I actually culled most of my questions on the Candy Land game from this website. What I may do for this particular summer camp is change some of the questions on the Candy Land game so that they ask the students about Charlie and the Chocolate Factory instead of just general grammar questions. I think this will definitely be the way to go.
Any other suggestions/recommendations/insight/whatever will always be welcome.

So I never updated you all on how this lesson went.
To be honest, I can't really comment one way or the other as I ended up doing mostly "desk warming" for the entire summer. I couldn't get my students to show up to class every day to practice their English, and they weren't obligated to attend. This made for a rather nasty combination. I did maybe one lesson from this program and that was it. I never saw the students again.
Just to clarify, I'm not downplaying the lesson material in this thread. I think Lidija did an awesome job, and I'm so sure that this material would work quite well for a group of Korean EFL students. I just don't think the lessons themselves were able to weather the storm/survive my particular school's summer atmosphere and general student attitude of "More play, less school," if this makes sense. I really don't blame the students for feeling this way. I felt the same way when I was in high school. There was absolutely no way that the teachers were going to make me read
David Copperfield
or
Clockwork Orange
over summer vacation. So yeah... I really don't blame them.
In retrospect, I probably should have scheduled outdoor activities/games. Maybe this would have been more appropriate. Oh well, hindsight is 20/20, as they say.

The point to ask yourself is if the students have other classes during the winter and summer vacations. I've always had the most luck and student participation when I give the students something to do, like building things or creating soap operas. I will never do an English camp which has reading unless there is a request for me to do so.
