Guess Who? Game
« on: July 26, 2013, 03:24:23 PM »
You guys remember playing guess who as kids, right? The game where you, by process of elimination, have to guess who the other player's "Mystery Character" was? I wanted to play this game during my English camp but wasn't sure how to go about it at first. Especially since I don't have the game and would need multiple sets for my students. But! I stumbled upon printable character sheets right from Hasbro's website!

Here's the link to it:
http://www.hasbro.com/games/discover/guesswho/Guess-Who-Characters-en_US.cfm

So what I would recommend is printing out the sheets, laminating them, and then cutting out each one as if you were going to play a matching game. Then, have each student select a random "mystery character" from the existing selection (mystery cards are separate from the 24 playing cards). The rules from there are the same - take turns asking yes or no questions like "does your person have white hair?" until you think you know who the person is.

I think it should be pretty easy and straightforward to play once the students understand what to do.

Just wanted to update this lesson plan topic with some recent material I've made for it. Also, there are a few threads on waygook for this idea. Here are two others:

http://www.waygook.org/index.php/topic,62013.0.html
http://www.waygook.org/index.php/topic,3857.20.html

I gleaned some ideas and materials from these, but especially from Eat Your Kimchi's, here: http://www.eatyourkimchi.com/teaching-in-korean-middle-school-guess-who/

But I found that for my Middle School girls, the celebrities were a little outdated and they wanted the celebs they are crazy about now.

So I surveyed my students for their favorite celebs and made an updated version of Celebrity Guess Who.  On the back of that sheet (attached), I would print a list of all the people with a short description (also attached), so they could know who everyone was. I put them in clear page-protectors, which they could cross out with expo markers and use dry erase boards to clean up just fine for another round. I cut up names and put them in a cup at the table so they could chose randomly, or they could just pick whoever for their partner guess.

Also, here is the prezi I used for Guess who. You can make a copy of it and edit it for your class. It needs tweaking but this is a start: http://prezi.com/hy6c1tgyt_nr/?utm_campaign=share&utm_medium=copy&rc=ex0share

Hope anyone who is interested in teaching a Guess Who lesson can find this helpful!

I have created my very own Guess Who game based on the material in this thread!

Hope you all find this useful!

I recently tried my Guess Who game on a mixed-level high school class of all boys.

It was a miserable failure for the following reasons:

(1) There was a lot of cross-talking.
(2) Korean dialogue went back and forth as students struggled to figure out the person that was being displayed behind them
(3) Students seemed to be sick of the stand-up-in-front-of-the-screen format of games as is quite common with most speed games.
(4) Proper names were used to help students guess the person (making the task ten times easier)

Of course, all of these shortcomings probably had more to do with my failed attempts at classroom management, but the come-away lesson with respect to this game is clear:

Make sure to state the rules of the game before you play.
Make sure that you haven't played a speed game recently.

Hope this helps.

Here's 2 Guess Who PPTs I use in class.  One is a people guess who that i found on a website years ago and tweaked; the other is a monster guess who made from PDFs you can get on the Hasbro site.
