Looking for an After-School English textbook
« on: March 18, 2011, 10:47:08 AM »
I just found out that this semester I'm need to teach after school 4 days a week instead of two.  I'm going to buy a textbook for my low-level middle schoolers that focuses on conversation and activities. Anyone want to sing praise for a book that they use, or a downloadable textbook for false-beginners?

Don't let this get buried! I'm in the same boat and it seems like these kids need something on their desks to stay semi-focused. What textbooks are you guys using?

Hey, I also have to teach a conversation club once a week and decided to buy a book that I used before with students back home. It has convo topics to guide them ie. What would you take on a desert island- then they fill in/circle what they would take and then everyone discusses it.

It is called the Non-Stop Discussion Workbook by George Rooks and you can get it on a high beginner, low int. level. Obviously, if your school will not pay for a few, buy one for yourself and just photocopy from it each week.

If you can get to a local Kyobo or Bandi and Luni's go exploring through their conversation texts for something which suits you.

Two books to consider: Jazz English; Talk Talk.

"It's better to have tried and failed, than never to have tried at all!"
Teach this to your students... they'll thank you for it later!

I went down to Kyobo and picked up Wanna Talk 1 by Pagoda. A friend of mine recommend it, and though we haven't started class yet, it seems to be practical and concise. I'm hoping that my students get a lot better at the day-to-day English stuff... Good luck everyone!

I'm using 'Discussion: Process and Principles' Compass Publishing, and it's pretty good so far. It has good topics and discussion principles to teach. These extra classes are seriously challenging for me, so if you feel the same way, know you are not alone!

i was wondering if you could elaborate on the difference between the non-stop discussion workbook and can't stop talking? i would use the book to prepare two higher level students to participate in the provincial interview contest. which would you recommend?

I'm starting my afterschool class today with first grade middle school.  I've decided I'll be using Side by Side 1 with workbook and just copy for them.  I have had great success with the side by side series.  I will play a game or something sometimes for the last few minutes.

Did anybody use the Jazz English books? I was reading through it and although it was really thorough and fairly practical, it seemed incredibly culturally insensitive. Is this just something we're constantly going to run into?

Get the English Chest book (teacher's guide).  That saved my ass over winter.

I've been using Eye to Eye by Andrew White (you can find them at Kyobo) and it's been going fairly well. Focuses more on speaking and listening. Seems very basic..but I noticed that many of my students need the fundamentals..so it's been good so far :)

I couldn't agree more!  All my students want to do is watch movies, go home or sleep...Especially the grade 3 after school!

Each of my after school classes is 2 hrs long so i make them fill out a handout of some sort, then just have them watch a movie for the 2nd hour.  The handouts are usually about idioms.  Do you have any ideas?

'Discussion: Process and Principles' Compass Publishing is good because you can go off in your own directions. It gives you a general theme then you can make up your own stuff to supplement it.

The Tell Me More textbooks are great (and free), I use them for my afterschool class (they are mixed levels Grades 1-3) and it has some really good material for starting them. They can get a little bit boring, but they can definitley give you a good base to start and some good activities, then you just make it more exciting with your own ideas.

My school has given me two low level text books for after school and camp over the past year. The are called "Side by Side" by Steven J. Molinsky and Bill Bliss and "Interchange" by Jack C. Richards. "Side by Side" is lower level but I like both of them.

From my experience with an after school class of elementary students, I would suggest looking at National Geographic's "Time Zones".

http://elt.heinle.com

I can comment on the 1st book (red) in the series. It is OK, the best of the book is it has a little variety in the difficulty of the content (lots of pictures, and a little writing), which has helped me keep some accelerated & new ESL students active.
