What did you do this Weekend?
« on: September 05, 2008, 03:26:59 PM »
Not a particularly ground breaking lesson at all, but my high school girls still only answer with "I played computer. I watching TV" when I ask them about their weekends. I want to start every class by asking random students basic small talk questions, so this month I will review how to repond to these questions (weather, time, etc) so they will be prepared and have no excuse in the following months. (My kids now have binders where they save their work and when they draw a blank, or make an error we discuss in the previous weeks, I have the whole class go back and review what we learned.)

Basically, this stresses we DO NOT PLAY COMPUTER. We play games. Or we GO ONLINE, GO ON THE INTERNET, CHAT with friends, etc. Nor do we PLAY BOWLING or PLAY BEACH or PLAY CAMPFIRE. The picture page can be used to teach a variety of vocabulary I think.

This is great! Thanks. Do you mind if I make this into a power point?

This turned out to be a really good lesson and hasn't come up short on time yet. The only thing I added is that for the last 10 minutes of class I make six or eight teams and then I hold up words (shopping, internet, soccer, Seoul) used in class and ask for the expression that goes with the activity/word. This really got the students excited and practicing the expressions. It also really makes it stick out when the expression they give is wrong (ie I played swimming). I would also accept more than one expression, for example the word "MOVIES" could have answers "I went to the movies/I went to the cinema/I got a DVD". I gave the team(s) with the most points stickers as a prize. Thanks again for posting!

This was a really good lesson. I pop-quizzed my second grade classes to ask them what they had done on the weekend and got one word answers all around. I found the powerpoint really helpful. I had students writing down sentences to go with the pictures on their whiteboards. I'd pick a student with a correct sentence to write up on the board. At the end, I did a similar group game with giving out a word and asking for a correct past tense sentence. The students got so competitive (like usual) when they realized only a perfect original sentence would get a point. Here's hoping next week they can still answer me in sentences!
