(2011 National) Grade 5 - Powerpoint Storybook List
« on: March 18, 2011, 03:16:31 pm »
I teach Grade 5. I've been asked to find books that can be read for each lesson that relates to each lesson.  :o It might not of been hard if you didn't have abonimation lessons like 'What a Tall Tower' to cover. Anyway I have a few already as powerpoints so I can read to the whole class. I've got Whose Dung is this for leson 9. and cookies week for lesson 2. Can we start a thread to collect ppt books that can cover the chapters. I recon they would be useful for many people. I don't expact the exact language of the Chapter but at least as much of the target language as possible or a story that can be used to ask questions with the target language.

The list is now updated and is nearly complete. *Note I can only attach 10 files so the rest so far are in another of my posts in this thread or others peoples post.

Chapter 1 Big Green Monster (who am I?)
Chapter 2 Cookie's Week + Today is Monday
Chapter 3 Where are my pants
Chapter 4 Dear Zoo
Chapter 5 Treasure Map Story
6 ___________________ ___________________ ______
Chapter 7 Is She your Mother (or Big Green Monster)
8__________________ ___________________ ________
9 Whose Dung is This
Chapter 10 The Fox and the Crane
Chapter 11 Not Now Bernard
Chapter 12 We eat Dinner in the Bathtub
Chapter 13 Willy the Dreamer
14 ___________________ ___________________ ______
15 Chapter 15 Chicken Little
16 Silly Sally Story

Another thing is and its a great tip if you do want to read books to the class is to take photos of the pages with the close up option on cameras and put them on a powerpoint. Your teachers will think your a genius when really its so simple. So please if you know of books that would be great please post the names of the books/Author or better still make powerpoints from photos and fill in the blanks.

Alternate Story for Grade 5 Lesson 2 Period 5
« Reply #2 on: March 24, 2011, 02:36:29 pm »
So I was asked to find another story for this lesson (lesson2 Period5) Does anyone have a short story or video (not a song) that would work with days of the week OR subjects? I'd really appreciate it. Other options like Role Playing would be great too. Thanks

Your thread is pretty unuseful for assigning stories to target language in for the textbooks. A developing list would be most helpful for most instead of trawling through a pack of books that aren't related. I wish you hadn't sidetracked this post to 'your' thread.

Again, can people post a list of books that connect to the target language in some way in Grade 5 Elementary or suggestions.

If anyone posts a good suggestion I will update the list, save you doing it. I just found this one for Past Tense which is quite an easy chapter honestly to cover as many books could be used but this is a nice one for chapter 16. Silly Sally Story

so, do it! I merely suggested you look at my thread, seeing as there are related stories there.

Great idea! I'm so glad you made this thread, because I'd like to find stories for every lesson from 3rd - 6th grade. I hope this thread takes off and we can get a good collection. Here's what I've got so far:

Lesson 3 - Where are my pants? To practise prepositions.

Lesson 4 -
"Dear Zoo" is the most relevant - it has been modified to  include the target language "What a ...!"

Lesson 4 or 7 -
"I love Spiders" introduces new adjectives (although different from the target language).

Lesson 7 -
1.) Sleeping Beauty
2.) Little Red Riding Hood
3.) I love Spiders

Great idea, Jimmy.  The Choco and Chip storybook for Lesson 02 was brilliant; my students loved the activity of assembling the storybook, looking at the great PPT, and reading the story.  They pasted their storybooks in their notebooks.

I would be wary of sacrificing narrative coherence for target language.  Almost all of the narrative structure in the Elementary school textbooks comes from visual cues in the CD-ROM video sequence, making target language acquisition through exposure to them a debilitating prospect.  If you have the latitude for it at your POE, its sound extensive reading practice to expose aspirants to sustained narrative.  On the thinnest of pretexts, for example, if "fox" is on the vocabulary list, I'll do "Fox in Socks".

I have many of the Dr. Seuss books scanned (I use a scanner not a camera) into PPTs, and posted around on lessons where I used them.  You can get them by searching through my posts.  Like you said, trawling through them looking for target language quips is a chore, (I'm in the middle of polishing a killer PPT for "Friday, I'm in Love" used for G5 L02) but I will keep it in mind and treasure the results of y'alls efforts.

Who's Dung is This?   :o

Ha ha!

Mr. Wolf's Week works well with Chapter 2 on the main "Story PPT" thread.

Anyway, if Liz or anyone else could make a PPT of Hungry Caterpillar that would be great.

Here is a youtube video of the Hungry caterpillar. I think the kids would like it more than a ppt.

Some great posts especially Amy's list. Will update my list though of course there could still be better ones for each chapter so if anyone feels they have one better than the first list I'll try to keep it updated. Plus you can make your own definitive list. I'm selfish so I am only trying to sort out Grade 5 cause its what I was asked to do. Maybe someone else can start another grade thread if they need it. Forums are great but as they grow they become a mass of unorganised information that is constantly being reposted. I guess thats what stickys are for. Thanks again my life got a little easier.

I think the point of the ppt would be to have the book actually read to them by their teacher. I know my kids enjoy it when i sing/read to them instead of just listing to a cd or youtube.

How about this story for lesson 6 about daily routines? It can be read / viewed on the internet, or if you need only powerpoints, it would be fairly easy to print screen, copy and paste into a PPT. http://study.jr.naver.com/english/view.nhn?id=Yes24_english&parentId=12&page=9&sort=cnts_id&nid=1706
