Names
« on: September 10, 2008, 12:37:42 pm »
I took an idea someone from the site had, and made it into a powerpoint and worksheet.  I showed a short pp presentation about my name and my brothers' names, and other topics related to Western names. My big classes rarely listen to anything, so I followed this by a 7 point question quiz. Then they guessed if names were male/female (my highschool kids don't know "male" "female" so this is good to review) and to guess what the nick name is by writing it. In my bad classes, most kids didn't do the nickname part, until I reminded them that an incomplete worksheet means a 0 mark for this class. But the good classes had fun, especially when I asked them to guess pronunciations. After, I asked them each to write and share the meaning of their name (Korean name meanings are from Chinese characters) and their nickname. I collected their work, and will give them the English equivalent of their name. So if it means Beauty=Bella. Or, by sound... Sujin= Susan, etc.

That's great for a first class - thanks.  Your Korean is very good.  Did you translate those words or do you know them?  Amazing.
Just one point though.  Pure Korean names like Pu-reum, or Neu-ri may not have a meaning like the Chinese ones.  I guess they could make one up or something.

whoops, forgot to attach the PP.... might help :P

my korean is terrible, i just collect words as i come across them and copy-paste them into a Word document for future use. a good way for me to study.

you're right, many names have no meaning, but this gave me the opportunity to review making a negative sentence... "My name doesn't have a meaning... I don't have a nickname" , etc.

No worries. I just thought I'd ask in case it was posted and I'm losing my mind from too much gimchi.

I'm updating this lesson to use in the coming term. Here's my work so far (new ppt). I will add any edits as soon as they are ready, as well as the lesson plan.

*I was unable to reach the OP to get more info on what the "name video" was, from her original presentation.

The two PPTs are the same, just saved in different formats.

Here is my final edition of the updated "What's in a Name" lesson.

I am reposting the PPT with some slight changes and adding the new version of the handout. The lesson plan has been updated as well.

Basic idea of the lesson:

1. Present info about English names.
2. Students answer comprehension questions.
3. Name activity - guess whether the name is male or female and what the nickname would be.
4. Students fill out their name meaning and nickname and hand in worksheets.
5. Teacher tries to find English equivalents for their Korean names.

**There is potential for some kind of name game at the end of the class, but I haven't developed one just yet. If I make something up I'll add it on here.

This is a great lesson for my students. I tried giving them names last year but it was a little difficult. But I think they will like this much better because their English name will relate to their Korean name. Thanks so much!!!

I think it will take a lot of time and work finding similar names in English but I'll probably compile a list and save it on my computer for future use. Of course I'll share that on here too, to make it easier for everyone. ***This will be only girls' names though, since I am at an all girls high school. Sorry for anyone with boys!

So the English names has turned out to be a huge project and is taking forever!!! Hopefully someday before the midterms I'll have it all figured out. Probably won't do that part again in the future, haha. In fact I'm really considereding just giving up and returning their papers without the English names part filled out...
